View Full Version : Cooling Questions
I'm sure this has been discussed over and over. But now that i am researching coolers for my newly purchased laptop, I have a question.
I read somewhere on the forums that the sager 2096 ( i think) has a cooler. Is this right or did i misread. I tend to do things like that.
I also noticed during research, that there are laptop desks. Not a real desk but something to put the laptop on. There is something called laptopdesk, which is foldable and one has room for a mouse. it says it allows air to circulate and keeps the laptop cool. this is inexpensive
there is another called laptop genie, which is adjustable, but no room for the mouse and way expensive.
i guess what i want to know, since i will use the laptop a lot on the couch, bed, chair, etc, and i have been reading how hot it gets on a lap. Do i get a cooler to keep it cool, or buy on of those lap desks and dont get a cooler. If i get a cooler, which one is considered good for a 15.4 laptop.
Any feedback is appreciated. :)

Well, if your using your laptop actually on your lap then a cooler won't work. In fact, it could makes things worse. However, if you have your laptop on a flat surface such as a laptop desk as you mentioned then I would suggest that it would not be a bad idea to have a cooler, but you need to determine if it would be feasible. If your just doing general computing and the like then you may not need a cooler. If you are doing heavy graphics rendering, audio work or indeed gaming, then you need a cooler.
However, it if your getting a cooler its very important to make sure you get the right kind. First you need to determine how the air flows with your particular lappy. Most laptops the fan on the bottom draws air in and exhausts out the side vents. I would suggest making a quick call to tech support for your lappy and verify the direction of airflow. Then get a cooler that has the air going in the correct direction for your lappy.
Example, let's say your lappy has a fan on the bottom and draws air in and exhausts out the side. You would then want a cooler with fans that blow or draw air in toward the bottom. I would suggest the cooler be made of aluminum as well because aluminum dissipates heat better than plastic.
I'm also in the market for a cooler and my lappy has air in through the bottom and exhausts out the sides. So I am currently looking at the following models:
Antec "Notebook cooler to go"
Evercool Model EC-NP-301
Rosewill Model RNA-7000W
Zalman Model ZM-NC1000
I'm also looking at getting an Evercool Magic cooler which attaches to your side exhaust vents and has a fan that helps draw the air out.
As usual thanks for your help Anewbus. I was also looking at the Zalman NC1000, since the 2000 was more for 17 size. I know you will use your laptop as a desktop, but i plan to use it in multiple places and a lot on my lap , so i' trying to see what is best.
As for the direction of the airflow, perhaps if Justin reads this, he can let me know what the airflow is for the Sager 2096.
if you find anything else out, keep me posted. :)
Also, if you get pics of your new toy, dont forget to send me some. :D

Just look on the bottom of your lappy and you'll see the tech support number. It's free, 24/7 and domestic. They can verify your air flow. I just called them yesterday trying it for myself and it was good. Almost no hold time and the person spoke perfect english and answered all my questions. You could call them now and I bet you get someone right away.
I'm trying to send pics, but having trouble. It seems I can't send through PM. I don't want to post them publicly yet. I looked at Photobucket, but they violate their own policies and the system won't let me sign up because they want info I'm not willing to share.
So I'm trying to find another way.
