now building --> 05/10/2011 Phase 2 (Sent for Custom Building / Testing / Burn In & Final QA)
Gladly waiting for next phase :D:D:D:D:D

I would like to say, even tho I am going threw the torture of the wait process and the 3 day delivery i chose (I'm doing my best and keep my self busy while i wait..LOL), I am extremely happy with the service and advice of Mr Bret -->Sales that he provided for me on the phone. "THANK YOU BRET!". People like you make a business like this such a success ;)

If it wasn't for him and his advice, I would not have picked this model, and be this happy with my new laptop. Its Perfect for what i want and i just cant WAIT! to receive it.

The Specs/upgrades: Model NP5165
- Processor: -2nd Generation Intel® Core™ i7-2820QM, 2.3-3.4GHz, (32nm, 8MB L3 cache)
- Primary Hard Drive: ~ 500GB 7200RPM (Serial-ATA II 300 - 16MB Cache)
- Thermal Compound: - IC Diamond Thermal Compound - CPU + GPU
My favorite part --> - Graphics Video Card: nVidia GT 555M 2048MB PCI-Express GDDR3 DX11 with Optimus™ Technology
- Ram: ~ 8,192MB DDR3 1333MHz Dual Channel Memory (2 SODIMMS)- Special

Ive already told all my friends at youth group/ school, and my minecraft players about xoticpc/laptop and believe me.. a few are quit jealous already :D I sure hope they don't try to get a better laptop than me :O

Also ordered a np5165. Initially, I was looking at the np5160, then WHAM!!! they came out with the np5165. Alittle more money but the graphics card for this model sold me. Should arrive on 5/14/11. Can't wait.

I guess I'm the first one (possibly in the world???) to get their NP5165. Mine arrived yesterday but I couldn't get a chance to load it up until now.

Here are the specs (only the one's I changed from stock):

~2nd Generation Intel® Core™ i7-2720QM, 2.2-3.3GHz, (32nm, 6MB cache)
~ IC Diamond Thermal Compound - CPU + GPU
~ 8,192MB DDR3 1333MHz Dual Channel Memory (2 SODIMMS)
~ 500GB (w/ 4GB SSD Memory) Seagate XT 7200RPM NCQ Hybrid
~Intel® Ultimate-N 6300 - 802.11A/B/G/N Wireless LAN Module

Unfortunately I'm having some boot issues (http://www.xoticpcforums.com/showthread.php?p=63519) so I haven't gotten to view its full glory.

I am also looking for a laptop. Do you know if the NP5165 comes with an extended battery? Does it come with an anti-gloss screen?

I know that the default is glossy, but you can matte-ize it for $210, if you're willing to pay that premium. Oh, it's more than just making it anti-glare by far, the color gamut gets a bump too.

05/05/2011 Phase 3 (Sent for Additional Customization / Custom Painting / Skinning Department)

it has been almost 2 weeks with no update so I contacted the customer service, they told me the screen (upgraded to higher-resolution LED) is in backorder. It will take another couple weeks for them to get more screens. :(

I knew it will take few extra days for upgrading parts (btw, I just upgraded ram & screen) but I didn't know it will take this long. I ordered on 4/21/11. It has been almost a month but I have to wait more. *sigh*

So far, I can't say I am 100% satisfied with the customer service.

You aren't 100% satisfied by the CS because you opted for a screen that was listed as BO when you ordered the machine and you somehow blame the CS people for your choice? It is somehow their fault that screen manufacturers have stopped producing the particular screens they were using and they have had to find suitable replacements for the one they were promising in orders?

Way to go man, way to go. You made a choice and are mad you have to wait for the choice, so point the finger at someone else.

First of all, I am just expressing my feeling as a customer based on my own experience.

I know not everyone might agree with me but I think XOTICPC should have contacted me (at least update the order status) when they found out they are out of stock of any part. I didn't like the fact that I found out about the backorder when I contacted them first.

Just to be clear, I didn't say I am dissatisfied with XOTICPC, I am just saying there are some area that they can be improved on the customer service.

They did when you ordered the machine, all the screens at that time were listed as back ordered on the customization screen. Reading 101.

Reading 101? Please correct me if I am wrong, is there any other additional build time info besides then in this customization page?

http://www.xoticpc.com/sager-np5160-custom-laptop-built-the-clevo-w150hn-p-2999.html?wconfigure=yes

According to this order page, it says, "15.6" FHD 16:9 "Matte Type" Super Clear Ultra Bright LED Anti-Glare Screen w/ 95% NTSC Color Gamut (1920x1080) (Add's 4-7 business days to build time)"

And my latest order status says "05/05/2011 Phase 3 (Sent for Additional Customization / Custom Painting / Skinning Department)" which means that basic built is done. Now today is 5/17, so it has been 9 business days passed. It is already more then what they listed on the website. But on top of that I need to wait extra 10 business days or more.

Obviously, you read about this backorder being is part of order process somewhere. Please enlighten me where you read that information.

Just to be clear, extra build time is not same as backorder. I am not saying backorder should not be happened but when it does, the customer should be notified. At least that's what I expect from any other online store.

Now, do you work for XOTICPC? I don't mean my comment to be personal in any way. But if you accuse that I didn't read any order process message, you better be able to back it up of what you are talking about.

Yes the backorder note has been removed since you ordered, but I know for a fact that it was there back in the end of April. I believe I even saw it as late as the first week of May.

Obviously, you read about this backorder being is part of order process somewhere. Please enlighten me where you read that information.

Yea there was a thread on here about it, I can't seem to find it right this second but it was fairly recent (right about when you ordered your laptop) that one of the Xotic reps confirmed that they were running out of the screens.

Just to be clear, extra build time is not same as backorder. I am not saying backorder should not be happened but when it does, the customer should be notified. At least that's what I expect from any other online store.

I never said extra build time is the same as back order. When you ordered I know for a fact that they had the screens listed as back ordered. I seems they have since cleared that note off the customization pages (don't ask me why, I don't know why especially if there is a back order again or still).

Now, do you work for XOTICPC? I don't mean my comment to be personal in any way. But if you accuse that I didn't read any order process message, you better be able to back it up of what you are talking about.

No I don't work for Xotic, if I did I would have long since been fired because I have little tolerance for stupidity and they have to deal with a lot of it. I can back it up because I am CONSTANTLY on here posting builds in the which laptop should I buy section. So I constantly saw the back ordered note.

Now I will grant you that they removed it and should not have removed it if the screens were/are still on back order. I suspect they are no longer on back order, but that you have a few people ahead of you from when the screens were on back order thus the delay. If that is the case then, yes they should have probably sent a quick note to let you know that you initially went into P3 for build and they ran out of screens or that you went into P3 because they received the laptop to put the screen in it, but are currently still out of screens.

Be joyous though, one of the Xotic reps will probably see your thread and investigate and send you info. They are good about responding to stuff like this. Oh and check your junk email, a couple of times depending on who sent the email it went to junk.

Brett says that my order arrived to XoticPC late last week (I'll assume Friday), so that's when the 4-7 business day countdown begins, not when Phase 3 starts. You have to remember that it takes about a week for your Sager to ship to Xotic from...well Sager.

... the backorder note has been removed since you ordered ... there was a thread on here about it, I can't seem to find it right this second

hmm, I had a feeling that you would say something like that.
I don't mind constructive argument but it has became just ugly.

Therefore this is my last reply to 'Maverick494' comments.

I don't see any reason to reply to his/her pointless argument any longer. Unless he/she proves me wrong by bring a concrete unarguable evidence such as a past cached website image of the order page on the day that I ordered.
I am not saying I can never make a mistake but I know what I saw and what I read, and I can not simply take someone else's word for it, especially that person does not have creditability.

To 'Maverick494': I have no doubt on your royalty to XOTIPC but just on your maturity.

---

Now, to XOTIPC staffs and anyone who is considering purchasing a laptop from XOTICPC:

I was not going to write this reply but I just didn't want anyone to have wrong impression.

As I stated before,
I am just expressing my feeling as a customer based on my own experience.

It seems that the backorder is an isolated issue. Since there are some people who ordered before and after got theirs first.
Frankly speaking, waiting two more weeks (or even more) does not make much difference. It just that I am anxious to play with a new toy, I am sure everyone can understand that.

My original point (and still is) was about the better customer service. When I said "customer service", I didn't mean the customer service reps, I meant the whole precess of the customer service.
Actually, the customer service reps were great, they were very kind and helpful, even apologized about the backorder.
The CS reps were one of the best I dealt with.

However, updating on any order status change is also part of customer service, I know it is not the CS reps fault but it is more like the the company's order process automation system.
I was basically in the dark and thinking that I would receive the laptop any day soon until I called them yesterday.
This should not happen. Even if having backorder is part of normal order process and it is written somewhere. (like someone claims it - although it does not make any sense). I mean is this a drug company? do you know when you take advil for headache you can die from internal bleeding and it is written somewhere. And don't tell me you wouldn't blame them if it happens to you just because it is written and you should have read before you take it.

I know that is a bit of extreme example but my point is clear. A customer has right to know status of his/her laptop and any update on changes. Since they charged the full amount on the day that I ordered, the way I see, they have something that belongs to me.

Just give you update, even after I contacted them yesterday and confirmed on the backorder, my order status (on the website) still has not updated about the backorder or any expecting wait. For this specific area of customer service is not the best I've seen.

But I have good feeling that my new laptop is worth waiting based on other customers' reviews.

Even though I said, the customer service is not being perfect, over all, I still have positive feeling about them. I mean who is perfect these days. ;)
Everyone (or company) has room to improve, I was just pointing out one.

I will end this comment by re-stating that this is solely based on my own order experience.

get a freaking grip and get real on the first part. lets turn this around and say, can you prove that you saw what you saw then? can you prove that u didnt misread or didnt not see the note about the backorder when you ordered? can you provide a cached image of the website on the day you ordered to back up "what you saw"? MAV can say he saw what he saw and that he cant take your word for it too. see how it works both ways?

as for the 2nd part, i can back MAV up. i have been browsing laptops on here and can confirm that the backorder note was indeed there up til a bit past the beginning of this month. i know because i received my 5170 on 4/26 and then the 5175 came out very shortly thereafter and i was debating wether to customize a 5175 and send my 5170 back. i looked again last night and youre right tho, the note isnt there anymore.

oh and before you question my credibility....no, im not mavs friend nor do i know him nor had any personal/private contact with him ever. as a matter of fact i think mav is obnoxious in some of responses in threads sometimes and that if he doesnt have patience for questions he deems "stupid", then dont bother replying. dont got nothing nice to say, then dont say it. but that doesnt mean i wouldnt post to back him up on something if i know hes correct though. also, no i dont work for xoticpc.

so theres no reason for me to come and lie to back anyone up. im a regular guy who bought a laptop from xoticpc and joined the forums, same as you. you may not believe me and still insist the backorder note wasnt there.....but hey, not every1 believes you as well.

Do you also question others when they say they are happy with their products or the customer service?

Why do I need to prove anything about I saw and about my personal feeling toward to the customer service? I am NOT the one accuse anyone being what they did or did not do. And I am sure there is a cached images somewhere if you do search but why do I waste my time on searching? To prove what? All I am saying is if you are accusing someone, you should be damn make sure everything is correct!

I don't care even if there was a message on other models you mentioned, or even really there was a message till the day before I ordered. Like I said, there was no message about the backorder on the day I ordered.

And something for you to think about, let just play your game for little bit. IF there was pre-notification about backorder and indeed, there was backorder on all orders till .. May (is that what you said?). How can you explain those who ordered the exactly same systems on or after my order date got theirs already?

And the bigger picture is not about there was a backorder message or not. It is about how the customer service handled the matter. When I called them about my order and about the awaiting time, the CS person did not give me the answer right away but then put me on hold for ~5-10 min while he contact the order department and searching for the order status then found out about the part backorder. Then told me there will be additional 2-3 weeks of them to get more parts (and plus original built time) And this just happened yesterday. And like you said, yesterday there was definitely no backorder message on the order page. Therefore this is not something they expected it.

And I never said the backorder should not happen. But I did say when it happens the customer service should handle better by notifying the customers.

BTW, what is wrong with some ppl? Everyone has to be all happy about their order experience in this post? Do I not have right to express my feeling based on my own experience? I do not see any negative post when someone said they are happy with the service.

I am not try to convince anyone to not to purchase from this company. I am simply posting my order experience just like anybody else.

And to johnjohn321, you are absolutely right!
dont got nothing nice to say, then dont say it

You have no right to call anyone "Stupid" even to Maverick494. Don't abuse the free of speech.

And for those who might disagree with my comment about the customer service. That is fine. You have right to your own opinion just like I have mine.

I've installed latest Ubuntu on a Vmware and everything went smooth and fast. I have NP8130 and I'm pretty sure it will be the same on yours, I think it will be much better if you install it directly on HDD dual boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu or Ubuntu exclusively if you are very familiar using it. I'm not, but I have to say it's really fast and snappy OS, I wish I know more though. :)

I have Windows 7. I was planning on dual booting with Ubuntu, but I like Win7 too much, plus I already downloaded a more than a few programs to Win7, so it would be harder to partition.

When I go to "Control Panel/ Hardware and Sound/ Biometric Devices/ Use Your Fingerprint with Windows", I get a message that says "The selected fingerprint reader has no management application installed". So I guess it's not really a driver issue, I just need to download software.

Have you tried "Partition Magic"? Although PowerQuest (the company) is acquired by Symantec, their legacy product is still around for free download. I think PM 8.0 is designed for XP but if you have Win 7 Ultimate, you should be able to run app in XP mode. (hmm then again, I am not sure if you have win7 ultimate) Anyway it is worth try, it is dead simple to partition any HDD.

You know the funny thing is I noticed my posting privilege got temporarily suspended after my lengthly reply. And it is odd that this MAV guy being such as a mouth all this time suddenly being quiet then you showed up with low posting counts.
Have you heard about 'transitive logic' ? A=B, B=C, therefore A=C

Actually I didn't shut my mouth. You tried to take a swing at the customer service of Xotic PC. I called you on it, then you back pedaled and went off on some long tangent that I pretty much ignored because it comes down to you ordered a product that was listed as back ordered, want to cry and blame someone else for it. Should they have taken down the back ordered note if it was still back ordered? probably not.

MAV, welcome back. I must say what a perfect timing. Not even a min to waste.

I don't really know what I have done to you and I don't know why I am even replying to you.
Here is some logic for you to think about tonight.
IF there was a pre-notification about backorder and indeed, there was backorder on all orders till .. May (is that what you said?). How can you explain those who ordered the exactly same systems on or after my order date got theirs already?
And you even verified yourself that there was no notification about backorder yesterday but I called them yesterday and confirmed on the backorder (looked on my first posting).can you follow the logic so far?

The bottom line is I have right to express my feeling either it is positive or negative. Is it so wrong to say I am not 100% satisfied with how CS is handled?

Thank you. And please feel free click on the red triangle icon to report any abused post including mine. I do also want this craziness to be stop.

Oh and you are the living proof that who ordered the same laptop (or similar configuration) and will receive the item earlier then I will be. I ordered mine earlier then you but mine is still stuck on P3 status. I'd rather be wrong on this stupid argument and receive my laptop early like you. Oh well.

I'm not siding with anyone but I believe jjkim here has every right to express his/her feelings with his/her experience with XOTICPC whether we think it's right or wrong. Anyone could give a review about anything on any product and it's on the reader's discretion to believe or not. This is already going in circles and has to stop, I have a feeling this thread will get closed by the moderator if this continues.

I'm not sure what happened, but after bugging Brett quite a bit (at least 3 times in the course of <2 weeks) about where my laptop was in the 'queue' of screen upgrade orders and messaging Justin twice, I have a feeling one of them pushed the magic button. :P

I have been looking at the new Sager NP5165 notebook and had a question regarding the power supply. This is a very similar unit to the NP5160. The GPU is faster but what I don't like is that it is using the much larger and heavier 120 Watt power supply instead of the 90 Watt unit that is on the NP5160. I travel a lot and equipment weight is a big issue. I have considered the Sager units and MSI that have the nVidea 460 GPU but those have the 180 Watt power supply and with the higher notebook weight of the higher end units I had to take them off my list. There really does not seem to be any or much higher power demand in the NP 5165 over the NP5160. Is the 120W power supply necessary? I would at least prefer to use I iGo Travel charger that will work Ac 12V DC but only handles 90 Watts. I can understand that the standard power supply is the 120 Watt and is what comes with the purchase but I need to ask if the NP5165 with a I7-2820 CPU, 8G of ram, BlueRay, 750G hard drive can be run with the 90 Watt power supply?

Somebody asked me about gaming on this system..? HA!

Expressions in text cant explain my fealings right now...

IM in love with this Laptop!!!

I host and play Minecraft with my friends ->> it loads thousands of 3D meshes(3D objects) in the vertices in c++.. and let me tell you this laptop handles it surprisingly well!

I now have visual studios 2010 ultamate for my c# programing, im learning 3D developent, and this laptop handles it soo ever smooth!

so.. while playing minecraft, i minamized and start programing, while i listen to youtube techno music, while in a coffee shop? Ha! it runs Soo smooth!

Like i said my fealings on this system is over welming! --remember also this is my first laptop and im soo glad i found xoticpc!!!!!!!!

THANK YOU!!!

Not only that but ihave a few friends from youth group who are Jelouse! hahaha

By the way, i enjoyed reading this board and ill continue comming back,so intertaining! :P

I would also like to add, ive been a xp os fan for along time, maby becouse i use apache and host websites, and i thought i wouldent like windows 7, I was wrong! I love it, tho its a bit of a learning curve LOL.

My advice to others--

get Avg anti virous..
get malwarebytes --> its a antispyware.
vnc allows me to connect to my other servers while in a coffe shop , haha.. i feal so high teck.
i use yazak for my hack bots in yahoo chat. --shhh. (
Note: while using these 20 or so bots, this sytems is still running smooth!)WOW.

other notes: i havent been able to play other games due tothe fact i dontwant to pay for a game twice, but ill sertianly let you know when i do test them on this system.

I can go on forever about this laptop...

long story short i now use this laptop for everything. I wouldent traid it for nothing!

Like i said ,fealings dont express how i feal about it.

That is correct i am a independent game developer, i know tcp/ip multi sockets and multi threading, i use sql 2008 for database, in short massive multi-player online games.

for 2d games Ive developed with silver-light with xaml for my front code and c# for my behind code, basically that's the dll files used as the engine while on a browser allowing it to a cross platformed game world wide. imagine going to a browser with data-streams threw the tcp/ip sockets going to multi clustered servers.. LOL thats what i did. the datastreams are developed by me from scratch. (I hate using other peoples code.)

I have found tho that games in browser with datastreams hitting it to fast crashes browsers, teaches that browsers are very week in that respect. I had to slower the rate of data going from the server to the client.

So instead i decided to head into the 3D specs, I'm using xna as the tool for c# im sure you herd of it. working with Vertices and Indices and using the matrix's mathematics to transform 3D objects into a 2D screen is a lot more challenging, thank god for the .net framework library. -Creating 3D meshes from modeling programs is one thing.. but making it work in c# is a whole nother story especialy when using bones for 3D animation and rendering your baked images wrap around the 3D objects correctly in game.

Also note when developing a .exe program you can control things like mac ip's Identifying users the right way rather than ip's.

also i use Obfuscator to scramble and incrypt my data so others have a hard time reverse engineering, im the type that is greedy with my code. :O

I also have worked with windows apps for c#, i even created a massive online games using windows forms, built a clustered servers with it all for kicks and giggles. ;) The downside is you have to build your own threading properly with windows forms, and i have found that using console based app, and applying windows forms threw the .net library is much more faster and less lag than just using windows forms, of course you have to remember I'm dealing with thousands of data-streams hitting it.

Anyways I'm mad passionate about my work so once i start i can talk your ear off. LOL.

I am still very young and learning, im pure self tought and enjoy it.

Note: Dont let this fool you, i took Microsoft word in for a class in school last year, and i failed, im very selective about my knowledge (or i dont pay attention) The teacher tried to make us memorize names of buttons, and gave us stupid quizes that had no relation or useless info about the program, and i didn't do my home work, long story short i did fail that class LOL. I even dont spell good, so im not all bells and wisles ;)

I can tell but at the same time I :notworthy for what you can do because that is used to be one of my dreams, to be a game developer.

Just got mine yesterday and i have been installing all my must have software but i am a bit confused on how nvidia optimus is used. I don't plan on taking my laptop anywhere far from a wall socket so i don't need it to have a long battery life. I just want the maximum performance in games. Anyone have a tutorial or something i can read because the small sheet of documentation that came with the laptop really didn't help me out that much. Thanks!

im assuming you mean that you want your laptop to use the dedicated Nvidia GPU every chance possible rather than the integrated graphics. if thats the case, you simply hit the VGA button in the left corner and make sure it is orange. that means that optimus technology is on and your laptop will automatically switch over to use the dedicatedGPU whenever possible.

when the VGA button is green, that means your laptop will only use the integrated.

there are 4 icons each with its own light to the right of the VGA button. the first 2 are related to which gpu you are using. first icon is for the integrated GPU and the 2nd icon is for the dedicated nvidia GPU. green light on first icon means you are currently operating on the integrated gpu. orange light on 2nd icon means you are using the nvidia dedicated GPU.

so youll either have a green light on first icon, or orange light second icon. both will never be lit at the same time.

Is there any way of running the KHX1600C9S3K2/8GX (Kingston HyperX 1600Mhz 8GB RAM) at 1600Mhz? It defaults to 1333Mhz and I don't know how to change it in the BIOS settings of my NP5165.

Hi, I would like to have some information on the crippled 128 bit bus DDR3 GT 555M. Is the performance reduction significant, and if it isn't could some statistics be provided? Secondly, If I do not purchase the O.S., there be an O.S. already installed. I watched the online review for the NP5160 and apparently it did not require an O.S. set to be purchased... so. Yes, thank you! :P I hope someone can respond fast because I'm thinking of purchasing it TODAY!

ok Minecraft is verry heavey set in 3d meshes, its as smooth as its going to get, no trubles.

I play frontlines fuel of war(ffow) online, just installed it a few days ago, and i got to tell you..... it runs better and more smooth than my desktop..:O

Amazing!!!! I love this laptop more than any object i own now :D
Plays any game out there with no trubles, no lag , even with high ping when playing multiplayer there is still no lag, im so flabergasted!

so i also play Battlestart Galactia Online... NO lag!!! (even with houndreds of players in map)

the more i use this laptop, the more i fall in love with it ;)

I would also like to add: this laptop stays prety cool when playing games, its quit, and verry enjoyable.

When a game loads, or plays, i can minamize it, start other projects simutanously and max the game and this laptop stil runs fast, smooth...words dont express how i feal about it.

I recomend it highly.

Hi, figured I would post this here.

I am looking at this laptop [need some more battery life than the 8130 can offer], how is the battery life for this laptop? If you could specify which processor you use that would also be very helpful to me as well, I'm trying to figure how much of a dent an i7 will have versus an i5.

I really wish this laptop had the option for a 9 cell instead of the 6 cell, then it would be an instabuy. :S

Thanks.

I see this never got addressed.

1st: Make sure you are in high power mode
2nd: Make sure that you have the latest COMPLETE nvidia driver installed (there is a 5165 thread in there that has a link to it)
3rd: if the above two do not work make sure that you are using the dGPU for sure by putting the program you are using on the white list for that GPU.

Received my NP5175 last Wed. and have pretty much completed setup, so I wanted to post a review. Since there's not a 5175 thread, I'm posting here - basically same machine, different size screen (indeed, the BIOS version incorrectly reads W150xxx instead of W170xxx).

As bgnd I teach game programming/development, primarily graphics and low level programming techniques. Oddly, I am not a hcore gamer - I prefer the classics - but I show both classic and current games as examples, and of course have to show coding effects and eval student projects.
My 2005 Toshiba struggled w/ DX9 (much less DX10), so I was already looking for replacements when it died in January.
I was set to order the 17.3" 1st gen Core-i7 NP71xx, when Clevo killed that for the new Intel 2nd gen chips. So I waited :). The NP5170 came out and, again, I was set to order... when Intel recalled the chipset. So I waited :). Finally, the chipsets became available. And the machine was on backorder. So I waited. :)

Finally... I ordered the newer 17.3" NP5175. Yea!

1st. Order to ship was *very* fast. Total time was like a week from received pmt to received laptop at my door. My order was not complex, pretty much a str8 order, so it wasn't a major build. i7-2630, 4GB, 1920x1080 17.3" Lcd (std glossy) , 500GB 7200rpm, no OS install, etc. very standard

The NP5175 is exactly as it appears - a solid, midrange laptop w better graphic card/screen than the equivalent box-store specials. My 2nd/3rd choices were the Asus N73, G73, and NP81xx running min $200-500 more. For Bang per Buck - this is a very good deal.
The GT550M is adequate for playing most games, but won't impress real gamers. But It is more than adequate for last-gen games and all general purpose development tasks(ie., programming, animation design, photoshop, maya, etc), so for my purposes it perfect - show games, do lectures, show game techniques.
The machine is very austere - str8 black, angular, minimal controls. I like the grain finish - no fingerprints! Flex is about average for a 17.3, weight is good - I won't mind carrying this around campus.
The chicklet keyboard... well, I don't like chicklet keyboards, but I'm getting used to it; it's not better/worse than any other. I'd *pay* for a backlit replacement keyboard.
The screen is gorgeous. DVDs played and looked perfect. Running NVidia's test suite and demos - vyGood; running DX11 samples - perfect. The Optimus technology really does work seamlessly. It switches rarely - 90% time is in iGPU, but when it switches, it seamlessly goes to the NVidia dGPU - no glitches, no flicker, nothing. The only issue I've seen w/Optimus came after installing Speedfan - which polls the dGPU temperature every 5s... and caused a switch to dGPU every 5s - not noticable except the monitor LEDs keep switching green/orange. Any utility that talks to you NVidia chip would likely have the same effect.
Machine setup was no problem - Win7x64 Pro, join my domain. Included driver disk was nearly up to date. A new Realtek WLan driver was available when I went looking.
Battery life was BIG for me - thus, Optimus. I am getting *realistic* 3.5+ hour battery life running general purpose game development tasks (Visual Studio, Photoshop, Maya, student graphics and games, server admin tasks, etc.), and 2.5hr+ demoing game/graphics technique.
Temperature - results may be different for the NP5165 - averages 60C per core. Temp running 100% on all 8 proc threads topped out at 90C, using CPU-Burn to test. GPU Temp I haven't stressed, but hasn't exceeded 75C in NVidia dev environment and DX11 projects.
Reliability? 100%. Event log monitoring has been really clean.
WLAN - I've noted speed issues on large file copies - a reset of the WLan interface solves this. This is a driver/OS issue, not a machine issue.

Overall: Excellent machine for professionals who need a combination of good, but not balls out, gaming performance, in a large screen package that provides above average GP computing w/above average battery life.
For me, the box-store specials that had equivalent graphics/cpu/memory ran min $200+. In equivalent $$ range, there were some good machine specials, but always lacking at least one must have, usually the 1920x1080 graphics or DX11 compatability.

Xotic was fast, no fuss, and delivered exactly as ordered.

A few requests: (1) Better BIOS! There's almost no configurability. (2) A backlit keyboard, preferably non-chicklet, but whatev.

Thanks y'all!

No screen discoloration for me. Only a few bright edges and a very faintly bright streak in the center when I do an all-black screen test. Also, without color calibration, the Google Chrome icon (which uses 3 colors on the outer rim of the circle, primary red, primary yellow, primary green) has noticeable pop-up for the red. I'm also super nitpicky, so ymmv.

3dMark06 score plugged in: 10104 3dMarks
3dMark06 score on batteries: 7374 3dMarks

This is with all 3dMark06 setting on stock, except that the resolution was changed to 1920x1080.

I also used MSI Afterburner and overclocked my GPU to 700 MHz and raised the Shader clock to 1400 MHz.

I have gotten higher results than this before, I can't remember if that was just because of having it on the stock resolution or something else.

Edit: Oh and I have no discoloration or any complaints about the screen.

I just received my 5165 today, and I am really happy with it as a device.

I, however, cannot get Ubuntu 11.04 to install. My persistent 11.04 USB won't display anything, and my alternate installer CD fails to detect any internet devices (neither wifi nor ethernet).

What have you guys done to fix this? I'm not the most knowledgeable linux guy, so hopefully I'm missing something easy about loading drivers.

hit the FN+F11 (I think its F11 for wifi) to turn on the wifi card. Also if you aren't a huge linux guy you might give Linux Mint 11 a try, its a bit more user friendly in my experience than Ubuntu.

Fn+F11 is indeed wifi. The wifi card still does not turn on (the LED stays off, and the installation still does not see it).

that tells me that there might be a problem with whatever ubuntu's version of the driver for the fn key is. did you try linux Mint or are you set on unbuntu? I'd also consider getting a copy of windows somehow in order to make sure the hardware is working properly before I proceeded further with linux, I mean why tear your hair out if its a hardware problem.

I'm actually posting from the laptop right now, so I know the hardware isn't an issue. I have a few extra copies of Vista Ultimate but decided it was worth using my last Win7 key on my laptop.

I thought the Fn key worked at a hardware level though. I can still use the trackpad, LCD, sleep, and BT buttons in the Ubuntu installer. The brightness does not work, and there is no sound to test the mute/volume shortcuts.

There was one or two posts earlier in this thread about the 5165 running hot (60C - 90C, idle to under heavy load).

Seems maybe they made it a bit smaller than it was ready for?

Can anyone else confirm this?

I'm interested in this laptop for it's size + feature set, but some of the reviews (here and at notebookforums) have me bordering on concern.

I think that 90C is acceptable for a quad core laptop under load. I mean, every i7 laptop out right now seems to be running at that point or higher.

Also keep in mind that the trackpad plastics feel quite cheap. And I wish the back of the monitor wasn't so glossy... My fingerprints are already covering it after 2 days.

Hey I have had this laptop for about a month now and I am loving it. The track pad feels wonderful to me but that's my opinion, also I don't know about the temps mine usually stays at like 55C the whole time I do anything. :D

ok that means that its an Ubuntu issue. Try a different distro of Linux perhaps? or are you deadset on Ubuntu?

I really wanted to use Ubuntu 11.04 for the new gui/desktop...
I can try something else though. I'll have to find one.

You can put gnome 3 on almost any distro. Just use google to find out how.

Well ... finally arrived ... so far ... it's immensely powerful for the type of work I do ... and plays all my games happily. BUT ... I would return this thing right away, if it wouldn't cost me an additional $250 in shipping charges.

Reason? Two. First ... The speakers. They are appalling. I don't know if there is something wrong with them ... but even with the volume cranked you can barely hear them. My cell phone has a better speaker, and I stress the singular form "Speaker". It's quite sad. I read that they were lacking ... but I never even once considered they would be this bad.

The second ... the power adapter. Talk about a brick. I thought it was a joke when I opened the box. It really takes the portability out of the whole unit. I now have to look at getting a new laptop bag as the PC fits ... but not the power BRICK!

I understand the need for power to keep this thing running, but I have owned other i7 based laptops with similar discrete graphics and the power adapters are half the size and weight.

----------------------------------

All that set aside ... there are some extreme positives ... The major one being the screen. I have never seen a laptop with a screen anywhere near the quality of the 5165. It's a dream to work and game on. The keyboard is also great. I love the chick let style as there is no flex at all. But ... the delete key is in the wrong place (the * and del keys should be swapped). :)

Maybe I'll get used to it's shortcomings ... I'll have to wait and see. Sorry ... for the rant ... had to get that off my chest. :)

Besides that, it will run twice for the boot up. I mean i will see the screen SAGER two times. I bought this with one my friend but his laptop go through it less than 30 second. A wonder if there is a solution for it. Anyone mind to help me?

I notice that the build you posted says no operating system. What did you put on it for an operating system? Have you used the driver disc to install all drivers?

Hello everyone,

I was just wondering if any of the 5165 owners have this game? Could you tell me how well/poorly it runs? I'm considering buying Skyrim or maybe Witcher 2 instead. Thanks.

A .doc file indicates a Microsoft Word document, while a .docx file extension means it was created using Word 2007 or a later version.

Love my 8130 and only issue I had was my USB 3.0 ports would not always work right with my External Drive or USB mouse. Did a BIOS update and that resolved that problem.
