First, this is just a quick list of things I have observed, or my own opinions on the NP 8660 in the two days I have had it, and being my first time as an xopticpc buyer, and observation or two about xotic as well.

xoticpc delivered. No complaints whatsoever. My only question is what differentiates xoticpc from sager? Why shouldn't I have just placed my order with Sager? This is not meant to be a knock on xoticpc, as my experience has been great. My observation was that my laptop arrived from sager, in sager packaging, shipped directly from sager. Which again, is fine. Just curious.

On to my first impression on the NP8660

I have been using a Dell Inspiron 1520 for some time so much of my thoughts are a comparison between the two laptops.

The 8660 on first view is a very highly styled design. Brushed aluminum case, and gloss black plastic bezels. The very first thing I noticed was that this thing is a magnet for finger prints. You simply cant help smudging this laptop up with your fingers and hands, no matter how clean they are. This tends to make the laptop look dirty. So, simply an aesthetic issue for me. I also do not like the little image of the microphone printed next to the microphone hole on the notebook deck. It keeps catching my eye, and looks like a piece of lint or debris stuck to the surface.

The other thing I noticed right away, was the size of the power supply. It is a bit on the large size compared to my Dell, and has its own cooling fan. The cooling fan does make a fair amount of noise when you are pushing the system (such as game playing). Besides the added space and weight that this power supply adds to my backpack, I also worry about the vents and fan becoming blocked buy dust, and debris as these power supplies tend to sit on the floor.

The next thing I noticed was that the display was not very bright. (Display: 15.4" WSXGA+ "Glossy Type") I adjusted the brightness to full and it is still dim in my opinion. My Dell is much brighter, and to me more vibrant display. It’s the same type of Display same resolution.

Now this next point is very subjective. I have always been highly sensitive to screen refresh rate. If the refresh rate is too low, I will get a headache and slight nausea immediately. The 8660 is set at 60 Hertz, as is my Dell, but I cannot look at the 8660 for more than a few minutes without feeling ill. I am not sure what to do about this. Right now I have an external monitor plugged in which is fine. Not a good long term solution though.

I also noticed that my text and icons seem “fussy” or slightly blurred. Again, a subjective opinion, but my Dell in same settings is much easier to read.

The keyboard is nice and responsive, my only complaint is that the arrow keys are small and cramped (I am old time gamer and still use the arrow keys, not W,A,D, etc.)

I have not fully tested the graphics capabilities out yet. I have installed and played Call of Duty 4. It looks beautiful, and I get good frame rates. The problem I ran into was the came would constantly crash. Looking around I found this was related to Windows Vista 64 and the RealTek Sound drivers. The driver from Sager will not help you with this problem, you need to get them from the RealTek site. Release 2.0.2 seems to have fixed my crashing issue.

Here ends my first brief thoughts on the NP8660. Its only been two days, so I may get more used to it, or I may be giving it to an employee and ordering something else. It really depends on if I can get the display issues I have corrected.

Love to hear other 8660 owners weigh in on their thoughts.

Thank you xoticpc for doing what you said you would do when I ordered. That seems to be more the exception that the rule these days with many vendors.

If you move fast the people at Xotic PC can help you return your computer and get a refund (if you are still within 30 day's from the shipping date.)

First: The people at Exotic PC include an extra two years labor warranty with a purchase of a Sager laptop.

Secondly: If you have ever cruised the internet and checked out the other notebook forums about Sager's support then you would know that they don't do very well when it comes to customer support. Xotic PC got rave reviews by acting as a customer go-between to get things done.

The above were big things when it came to making my purchase of a Sager NP9262. I can't very well use a desktop where I live and I travel to the USA to visit friends and relatives.

RaderCad made very good points.

You also will get XOTIC PC 24/7 support. Where Sager you only get support during business hours Monday through Friday.

SXW out of all the reviews about NP8660, yours is most negative, it sounds like you just can't let go of your old dell. Well, I guess I should tell you that now is the time to let it go, and start enjoying your new laptop. I am emotionally attached to my old hp too, but life has to move on.

SXW,

Your looking for perfection in an ever-evolving industry. You will never find it.

Point #1 = As BW and Justin stated = Xotic offers better warranty coverage and tech support access than Sager does.

Point #2 = finger prints and Microphone icon - Any laptop you buy will have an area where you will notice fingerprints and I imagine including your Dell. You can always take a soft cloth and kind of keep you lappy wiped down or something at the end of the day. As to the Mic icon - what were you hoping for? Have you had your eyes checked lately? I mean, why bring that up at all? I guess I'm just not seeing your point there. Also, you have to consider that you purchased this lappy for performance, to serve your needs, not to prop up on a shelf to collect dust and stare at all day. (Although your certainly free to do that if you like).:)

Point #3 = Power supply and fan - The reason for the power supply being what it is comes from the demands of your new lappy. The reason you didn't have that on your Dell is because now your Dell is a paper-weight compared to the power of your new 8660! The fan is there on your PSU and in the laptop for a reason. You are going to hear fans in any computer at a certain time, like when things are heating up whether its a desktop or laptop. They shouldn't be loud enough to disturb the neighbors though. If your laying the power supply on carpet , please don't. Carpet just makes it heat up quicker and can shorten the life.
As for the weight, did you look at all the specs before buying? If you did, you would have known the weight and then would have been able to determine that factor.

Point# 4 = Display = Go to Control Panel and check your resolution and color. You may not have it set to optimal. I have a 15.4 inch glossy screen on my Force 3298v2 and it looks better than my bigger monitors!
If it's still too dim for you then there are two other possibilities: A) are you using it under bright light? B) When was the last time You saw an eye doctor?

Point #5 = It makes no sense that you would be getting headaches and feeling sick looking at the screen for only a few minutes and then turn around and play games with no problem? There are a couple of games I tried in the past that have made me sick to my stomach from the movement, but other than that.

Let's see, dim screen, fuzzy icons and text, high sensitivity to refresh rates, headaches and nausea, etc. seriously, it sounds like you really should see a proper eye doctor for examination.

I have had my first laptop now for about 2 weeks and things are different in the keyboard and mouse department on laptops. I can't type on my laptop any faster than one word per minute. On a regular full size keyboard I'm 40 words a minute. I struggle with the touch-pad too. So I just hook up a full size USB keyboard and mouse and good to go. I should learn how to type on a lappy keyboard, but its not a priority right now for me.

Finally, I must say that perhaps you chose the wrong machine for yourself. Maybe your better off going back to your underpowered Dell or something and just living with its limitations. I'm sorry to hear your not happy with your new lappy.

You might want to install the drivers for your external monitor. Without the proper drivers, no hardware will perform to its full potential.

Just note the part where you want to be able to play Crysis on High. Good luck finding something smaller to do that ;).
