Personally, I don't find the highest possible resolution (1920 x 1200) to be that practical for a 17" notebook, especially if you would like to play games at native resolution. That said, higher resolutions do downscale with greater clarity than lower-res screens, so there's that to consider, especially considering how few newer games you'll be able to play at even 1680 x 1050. As for the X-Fi, I'm pretty sure it's internal, but you'll really have to ask someone else. I've also heard of severe driver issues when used in Vista, but that was a while ago so it's very possible working drivers have been release in the interim.

Hi Brx,

PSRT did a great config there for you. Really, the only thing that would be the most cost effective to upgrade would be the HD. You could upgrade that to 320GB 5400RPM if you wanted to. Of course upgrading the video card to 1GB would be nice, but its not too cost effective right now and would throw you over your budget. Don't worry, the 9800gt even with 512 is powerfull enough and user-upgradable which also makes it future-proof.

As for the CPU, your fine with the T8600 2.4Ghz. To notice any real difference you would have to jump to the T9600 which would throw you over your budget.

I would stick with the Vista Home Premium, It comes in 32 bit and 64 bit so you can choose what you want and its more geared for gaming (a little less load than Ultimate. Plus, any new driver releases and such are more likely to be targeted at the Home Premium before the other versions since it is prbably assumed that most folks have that version). I don't run Vista myself so I can not speak from experience, but I was just looking around the Internet and it seems the soundcard driver issues for Vista have been addressed for now, so you shouldn't have too much trouble. I'm sure someone here will be able to address that in finer detail than I can.

PSRT made a good suggestion with the M870TU, but you should note that the laptop is now shipping with the 9800GTX gpu in it, which would really be the better choice in any situation. Especially since the OP now has a +300 budget.

PSRT, that is a nice setup for that price.

These Sager's are new to me, but I like what I see in the way of specs

Hey Brx,

Glad you liked my build. Personally, when I order my 5796 in the coming months, it will be with Vista Home Premium. I did some reading up on the differences a while ago (try a Google search), and the only noticeable differences stated were enhanced security (that is, the ability to encrypt files and folders) and a complete PC backup utility that, to my knowledge anyways, creates an image of your current Windows install, an image that can be reverted to should anything go horribly wrong with your machine.

Hope this helps, and good luck!

There's no option yet to have the 5796 ordered with silver trim as far as I know, and from the looks of things, that machine won't disappoint you in the slightest.

I think Windows Vista Ultimate is worth it if you are getting 4GB of ram so it can recognize all of the 4 GB. If you're getting less, like 2Gigs then I don't think it would be necessary. I didn't think it was the much more expensive either. I just got it so I could use the entire 4GB of memory that I had.

I was also thinking after I ordered my laptop that maybe I would have liked the silver trim color better instead of the orange but its too late now, :) I don't mind the orange. Sometimes I make choices too quick.

talldan you are incorrect, you only need 64-bit premium to read the full 4 gigs of ram, ultimate is best for big businesses. The only thing that decides how much ram is read is whether it's a 32-bit OS or 64-bit, as well as if its a 64-bit processor, etc. I am definitely ordering 64-bit PREMIUM, not ultimate because updates will be out for it sooner, and its a lot less of a load on your lappy :)

Hope this helps, don't want anyone having the wrong information!

Also, before someone comes in here and says 32 bit SP1 can detect 4 GB, no it cant. It will now state that the RAM is in the machine, but it will NOT utilize more system memory than 4 GB TOTAL (that includes the memory on your video card, etc, so if you have the 9800 GTX, you're down to 3 GB RAM already)

64 bit can access something rediculous, like 128 GB or something...
