================================================== ========

Anywho, what I'd like to know is what is a good amount of OC to use with the G74; Naturally, it'll have quite a bit of headroom, but I want a nice, modest overclock, that way I can squeeze a bit more FPS out of games like BFBC2, and Crysis 2. Nothing too crazy, but if I could play crysis 2 on hardcore with like 4 more frames a second, that'd be plenty.

I've seen vids with the g74's GPU clocked at 940, 1880, and 1500, but will the laptop still run cool under those levels of stress?

Mine's probably shipping this week, so I might make myself a guinea pig.

Anybody else have anything to add?

So I've got one of these and the machine is basically perfect except for one problem. The Num Pad keys are not Num Pad keys. The "Num Pad" keys provide the exact same key codes as the top row of number keys on the keyboard, meaning if you try to remap the Num Pad keys, the top row keys remap as well.

I'm considering sending mine back, as I really need those keys to be separately configurable. I've never seen a defect like this before. I would wonder if this is something that could be fixed with a BIOS update.

that's probably because notebook keyboards don't usually come with a numpad by default. Depending on whether or not they are hardwired, it could probably be fixed in a software update.

Anyone having problems with the spacebar not working a lot of the time?

I am going to guess the G74 suffers from the same problem my G73 did, either its dropping keystrokes (all the G73 series did that) or the spacebar is just a stiff PITA that doesn't like to work.

The spacebar only works if you hit it in the middle. If you go to the left or right it doesn't work. I'm starting to think I'm going to return this. This is a lot of money to spend for a computer and I can't even type on it.

My boot takes 2-3 minutes after 2 months of usage, only 250gbs on this harddrive and only using msconfig. I want to RMA this thing so bad and exchange it for another.. Asus G74sx-Xr1 btw

Have you installed a ton of programs?
Have you checked that your hard drive isn't full?
Have you got a good anti-virus running all the time?
Does the computer run normally once Windows has started?
If you have 2 HDD, try swapping the boot order in the bios and do a clean install of windows on the other drive (SmogHog has posted some excellent links to the legit Windows 7 ISOs as well as instructions on how to do a clean install on these forums). Realistically if you do this, you should physically remove your current C drive - which is not difficult at all.

I just really wish asus did not use a potato instead of a gtx 580m in a gaming notebook. That's the only reason keeping me from pulling the trigger.

If you haven't seen it yet, BIOS rev 202 & 203 convert the keypad into a true numeric keypad. NumLock is always on, but the 'Fn' key will act to shift out to cursor movement keys. According to an ASUS rep on NBR, they're looking into a future BIOS rev turning the Calculater key back into a true NumLock.
