So I got my NP5796 Sager laptop and its awesome but I'm having a few problems with it. I was wondering if anyone would know some solutions to my problems.

The DVD/combo drive freezes when playing music cd's and sometimes when I put in a DVD or CD won't always automatically start up. Sometimes i will close the CD/DVD drive with a cd in it and it will pop back out after I pushed it in. Whats the deal with that? I called tech support and he told me to take out the CD/DVD drive and put it back in to see if it was connecting properly to the motherboard but that didn't do anything..

the second problem is that when I restart it never restarts but stays on the shutting down screen. I even left if for about 30 minutes trying to restart after my taskbar froze and it would not shut down and restart so I had to push the power button to turn it off and then again to turn it on.

Tech support said they would send me a new cd/dvd drive if this one kept doing the same thing. I think i'll have to do that. I really hope there is not a problem with the motherboard or anything because I really needed this to work for my classes which i'm getting lots of homework to do in them.

Any help or solutions would be appreciated. Thanks:rolleyes:

Oh no! Sorry to hear this.:(
I’m not a major expert, but it sounds like your motherboard is fine.
I actually don’t suspect the OS straight away, but who knows with the taskbar freezing and all. You had the lappy come with it installed, right?
I’m wondering if it could be the GPU that’s making it freeze and not restart?
Ultimately this could simply be a driver issue I bet.

For the first part of your question: it sounds like it could possibly a defective optic drive judging by your description. At least tech support is on top of it and willing to send you a new drive if need be.

Sorry I couldn’t be of more specific help, but I’m sure tech support will sort it out.

I'd say it's probably a program that's freezing while shutting down. Try checking to see which programs start up with Windows, and then go into the task manager and take note of some non-native services as well. If the problem persists, there's a registry entry that you can edit that will force shutdown any program in a custom amount of time (say 2000 ms for 2 seconds) and that should get rid of the problem. Also, if it is the hardware, go with what Anewbus said, most likely hardware candidate is the GPU.

I would try updating everything possible; OS, drivers, etc. When you close the DVD drive, make sure your not closing it on the part where the release button is located, or it will just pop out again (I have done that a few times), but if your having those other problems a replacement may not be a bad idea. I agree with Zatara about the shutdown issue. It is most likely a program that is not closing, and causing the computer to freeze. Hope you figure out what the problem is :).

A simmilar drive issue has been discussed on the forums before http://www.xoticpcforums.com/showthread.php?t=620 just so you know your not alone and if the drive is bad it can be resloved positively :)

as for the lock up, I would tend to agree with Zatara, most of the time if my machine locks up it's because some program isn't playing nice with some driver.

Good luck

Called Sager technical support and they are sending me a new drive. I think that the problem is the drive since my computer works great when the drive is not in use. I hope thats it because I don't want anymore techical issues.
