Hey guys,

I'm having issues with my Express Card 54 slot not being recognized in Vista 64. Lately my Soundblaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio card has not been loading automatically on login. I've had to go into Device Manager and manually check for hardware changes. But now that does not work either. I have power to the card and there is an audio output of faint static when I have the volume turned to max. But for some reason Vista 64 is not recoginizing any devices being plugged into that card slot. I've rebooted the laptop multiple times, power downs, etc. Nothing is working now.

I thought maybe reinstalling the drivers would resolve the issue. I uninstalled the drivers for the X-Fi card but now I cannot install any new drivers or programs because Vista does not see a X-Fi product available as hardware, due to the card not being recognized in that slot. The card works fine because I plugged it into another laptop and that is recognized as new hardware automatically. But when I plug it into my laptop nothing shows up nor does Device Manager sense anything.

Does anyone know a way to force Vista to recognize hardware thats plugged into that slot or have any other workarounds or tips? I really want to get this working again because I really enjoy the sound I get out of that card for gaming.

I'm currently using a Sager 5793, Vista 64, 4GB DDR2, 8800mGTX

So it used to work and then stopped working?

Do you have any other type of card you can stick in there to see if that works?

You've already determined that the Creative card is working by testing it another computer so the only thing left is to determine if your problem is software related or hardware related. If you can test another type of card in your system and it works you probably have latent driver issues with the Creative card and may need to more thoroughly clean the Creative drivers before attempting to reinstall. If another card doesn't work and you've already tried reinstalling the drivers for the laptop you may need to try a reinstall or repair of Windows. You can try a clean install of Windows without scrapping your original install just for troubleshooting. If it doesn't work after a complete reinstall of Windows you would almost certainly have a hardware problem. I say "almost certainly" because you need to be sure to download and install the latest system drivers in the correct sequence as described in your notebook's user guide.

Perhaps you want to try repairing or reinstalling Vista. The being said, Creative's X-fi cards have a history of problems with Vista, especially Vista64.

unfortunately you are not the only one dealing with this problem.

I've only skimed through this thread, so I don't know if a solution was reached. If nothing else, you have someone else to comiserate with :-/
