I am currently in phase 2 (building) and working out the details for graphics so that the process isn't slowed by me and my inability to make a decision because I am too damn excited just to get the thing.

Hey, I just wanted to let you know that as of last week, paint was down with no ETA as to when it would be back up. That's why I have my 9262 already.

Yup, I already talked to Justin about it. Hopefully I will have it before the end of December. Hell, just send it down to the local kindergarten class and have them go to work on it. (That's a joke, Justin.)

I have tried to find out what brand name of paint they use for the color transition but I have received no answer. I want to be able to make a decision without getting something I don't want. If anyone knows what type of paint is used, let me know.

I am getting the green-to-purple color shift with a few graphics. I am waiting for the service department to let me know that my laptop is built and moving to phase 3.

I received an e-mail yesterday from Xoticpc service support and for some extra $$ my laptop should be on it's way to get painted. Keep in mind I am getting the color shift paint, which I am told no one has done yet, so for a lot of dollars I will get the entire notebook painted with a large graphic on the outside and one on each palm rest. Hopefully the laptop will be finished with it's burn-in and sent for paint soon.

I have received another e-mail stating that the paint department is down for required maintenance. Someone doesn't want me to spend the extra $700 plus for the paint job. It would be a nice treat though.

Hang in there and when you get post pictures. It sounds very cool. I would have trouble waiting myself, when I want I want! :D

I know zero about paint but are they likely using automotive paint? As far as transition that would be technique?

sheaiiimef
11-23-2008, 09:54 AM
Yes, they do use automobile paint. They won't even give out the brand of paint that they use so that I could choose the transition colors, but I figured it out. With the paint, Xoticpc is the middle man and I do understand that they catch most of the crap that people throw at them because of the paint shop. I think the paint shop they use should provide them with a little more information that Xoticpc can put up for the customers.

Speaking of paint, there is a thermal reactive paint that would be awesome to put on a laptop. The link below is to a company has some very awesome paints that would make some computers mindblowing.

The paint shop has failed me and I have to go with a skin. While I can make my own up and Xoticpc will slap it on and cover it with some clear coat it will not be what I wanted. Oh well, that's what I get for taking 3 months to research laptops and get off my butt and order one. I will post pics, if any.

This is what I made to place on the cover. I am lower than amateur in the digital art department so, luckily you can only throw digital darts at me. Being a Jarhead I am also having the USMC emblem and POW/MIA emblem on each palm rest.

I game by the name Conan, love the movies and character, and I am Irish so I thought I would try to put something together that isn't flat and could add some false texture to the cover.

Well as long as you are still waiting. I simply cannot afford some of those options but think if you can afford making it a piece of art is cool. And yea while I don't know anything about Xotic of course outsourcing.

I suspect a lot is involved. Such as Xotic removing the guts so the painter only has case. Then of course there is the reassembly and making sure it still works.

It would be nice to have a section showing the custom paint Xotic does. We can all figure specs and components but paint is unique and visual.

Feel free to tell us the notebook cost but of course I am being rude asking so understand if you don't want to.

Must ask with this kind of killer system. What do you have now? I ask as this system is so much more powerful than what was offered a couple of years ago except maybe desktops. You might want to go to a hardware store and get some nails to secure it to your desk. :D

Éire go brác, Irish American also, notebook should be very cool!

There's http://www.xoticpc.com/exterior-finish-option-a-10.html and http://www.xoticpc.com/xotic-custom-skins-a-44.html showing off Xotic PC custom skins. Would be cool to see more actual Laptop pictures from customers.

@ powerpack: The whole setup is around 3800 or so. Not having to spend 700 plus on the custom paint is lowering the overall price to around maybe 3700 I think. I am upgrading from my desktop that I built almost two years ago. I am currently running an AMD 4400 dual core in it with 2M RAM and an 8800GTS 312. I will be upgrading the desktop upon return from deployment, by then much will have changed which is usual in the computer world. This will be an awesome piece for travel though.

@ kzap: Not to sound rude, anyone that has ordered a laptop has looked at the whole website and options for case modification from Xoticpc, if they haven't I have some ocean front property in Arizona.

I have received word today that my computer is shipping. I paid for overnight, but the ETA is for the 8th, Monday. I guess UPS doesn't deliver to my back woods area overnight, not that I blame them. Yes, powerpack, I will post pics and a review if I can. Since I will also be taking this to the "Sand Box" I will post in the owners forums how it is holding up.

I received my laptop today. I will post pics when I can and a small review. I am setting everything up on it now and have had no problems except wireless, but I think it is Vista as I had the same problem on my wife's lappy.

All I have to say is "Thanks Xotic, this thing kicks ass so far."

Here are the pictures of the skin job that was done. I am pretty satisfied overall. A few small air bubbles but nothing that makes me want to take a knife to them or Xotic. The cover is darker than the picture that I sent since the name is harder to read but that is not a show stopper. I have been pleased overall with the performance and ease of this computer.

I have played BIA: Hell's Highway and have many more loaded up to try out and I have been more than pleased.

The fans do kick in and with four running you can feel the air being sucked in underneath. Keep anything you don't want ruined by heat away from the back of the laptop.

The power brick also feels as if it has come out of a kiln and makes a noise like it has static inside. Keep it away from everything else and throw some air on it if you can.

Finally, onto the pictures:

Looks very nice! If someone asks why you have an Italian flag on your notebook? Count to "ten potato" before you respond. :D

I just have to ask, how the hell do they paint that image? The flag I guess I can understand but the grid? Is it an overlay? Éireann go Brách! :)

sheaiiimef
12-13-2008, 06:58 AM
It is an Irish flag that I found and I overlaid the Conan picture and lettering and made set transparency to them. I then used a applied a grid to them. It is supposed to look like it is on a metal grid. As I stated before, it is darker then the original.

This is nothing more than a giant sticker that they can print and apply to the computer.

The program that I used for these is Paint.net.

How tough was it to put on? I am probably going to purchase a 17" skin from gelaskins.com (have one of their skins on my iPhone and love it). I am a bit worried about making sure it's centered.

Any info \ tips are appreciated.

sheaiiimef

The guys at Xotic actually put it on for me. This skin actually wraps inside of the laptop in areas. The skins bought online may or may not do this, but most just cover the outer surface. If you use google and look in some forums, you should find tips and tricks. Good luck.

It has been a long time since I got on the forums and I just wanted to say that my laptop is still kicking ass and showing up all the ones everyone else has around me. Over 6 months in Iraq and it is going strong. It gets hot as hell but has not crashed or showed any distortion on the screen. I open it up about every two months and blow it out.

I am looking at sending it back to Xotic so they can give it a coplete cleaning when I get out of here. Maybe they will send back a 9280 or 9850 instead. Hey, mistakes happen.

All I can say is this thing has survived me hauling it around and the dirt and heat thus far so good on Clevo, Sager, and Xoticpc. I would really love to have that paint job though. Maybe the wife will let me get it after I get back, one can only dream.
