NP5793 v. NP9262

OK. I need a high-end laptop I can take w/ me as I travel around the world, basically for doing everything from word processing to gaming to minor video editing.

Key Factors: Power, Speed & Longevity.

So I need some ADVICE. Please.

I was sold on the NP9262, but now think I'm going to get the NP5793...BECAUSE I just found out the latter has the 45nm processor which uses about 30% less power (I think?). I am worried about heat, power and the subsequent effects on longevity. I would like to have the notebook for 2-3 years minimum w/o replacing anything. I leave the PC on for long periods of time sometimes (downloading, etc.) so that is a worry.

*I'm big on storage and the NP9262 is a + for its 3 HD capacity, but I think I can manage w/ ext. storage if using the NP5793 and it's 1 HD capacity.
*I can also do w/o the dual 512 8800 GTX cards, I think one will be enough.

So basically what I'm curious about is:

1. Is the 5793 just about as fast as 9262 (disregarding dual video cards)?
2. Is the 5793 cooler than the 9262, would the 9262 be running hotter?

My core config. for 5793:

45nm Core 2 Duo Extreme 2.8ghz w/ 6MB L2 800Mhz FSB
4GB RAM + 1GB Intel Robson Turbo Mem
200GB HD 7200rpm
512 GeForce 8800 GTX

My core config. for 9262:

Core 2 Duo E6850 3.0Ghz w/ 4MB L2 1333Mhz FSB
4GB RAM
200GB HD 7200rpm (possibility of X 3)
512 GeForce 8800 GTX (possibility of X 2)

I'm going to vote for the NP9262 for a few reasons. your key factors are power/speed and Longevity. all of which would be maxed with the NP9262. you have the 2.8 GHz listed with the NP5793 oc'ed you should realize that this will kill the temp in the system, giving the NP9262 the edge, and as you said it has a larger hd capacity. If portability and cost arn't a requirement, than the NP9262 is the better machine. It will run cooler and have better specs. Well thats my two cents anyway 8)

I just bought a 5793 instead of a 9261 because I will be using it for school and work and the battery life and weight were much better on the 5793. So if you dont need the extra power and can deal with external portable hard drives I would go with the 5793. I also got an extra battery as 2-3 hours wont be enough as it is.

you have the 2.8 GHz listed with the NP5793 oc'ed you should realize that this will kill the temp in the system...

Sorry, I meant that it can be overclocked to 3.2, but I won't overclock it! With that said, Rob, why do you say the 9262 will run cooler? I'm pretty sure the 45nm runs cooler but I'm not an expert...and the speed seems almost the same compared to the 3.0

So far so good, valuable input. This'll be a tough one to decide. I think the biggest deciding factor is the heat factor. W/ it running long hours the 45nm probably sounds best...hmm

NP5793 for the extra portability... :) The 9262 is quite a powerhouse, less of a mobile laptop. If used in one place and at all times, connected to a power source, then it's fine. Else, the extra pounds and the lower battery discourage it from being carried around. And that's where the 5793 seems perfectly balanced in everything :)

IF mobility is an issue than I agree, the NP5793 is the better choice, however that was not listed as a key factor for this poll. just thought I'd point that out :wink:

The 45nm does run cooler with a 35W thermal envelope while the 65nm runs with a 65W thermal envelope.

Another point you may concider is the E6850 is 3.0GHz with a 1333FSB and supports 800MHz RAM while the X9000 is 2.8GHz with a 800FSB and supports 667MHz RAM. So the E6850 has an extra kick to it

One thing I don't think has been mentioned yet: the 8800M will be the hottest part of either unit.

Thanks people, you all have been very helpful! I've decided ultimately on the NP5793. It is cooler and slightly more portable and almost as fast as the 9262. Getting the 9262 I'd be tempted to install 2X8800 cards and like you said, they are hot.

I have two WD Passport portable hard drives (250GB, 320GB) and will just get the WD 1TB external for backing up everything. I think that covers everything and I can finally have a peace of mind.

XoticPC seems to have lowered their prices some so that's also nice to hear.

Its been mentioned that the X9000 cpu is overclockable to 3.2ghz. What causes this oc to happen? Is it configurable within the bios by setting the multiplier up? If it's not the multiplier, would any of the 45nm cpu's have the ability to oc? Heat not being an issue here. (Which it would be) Slight OC's don't cause too much extra heat. I've got a 8800M GTS in a gateway (sucks) that I've got OC'd from 500/700 to 635/900 without heat becoming too high.

The CPU OC is done via BIOS , with an added multiplier.It is the only OC currently supported by XoticPc / Sager.
