Hello,
I have an MSI Notebook i bought from xoticpc, and i had a question about installing Windows 7. I am currently running Vista 32-Bit, and want to upgrade to Windows 7. I can get Windows 7 Ultimate 64-Bit Upgrade from my University for $17.85. What a great deal, i know. I was wondering if i could install the Windows 7 64-BIT upgrade over my Vista 32-BIT. Can I? And if so, would i have to do a clean install and erase my HD? Or is there another option? Sorry if these are stupid questions, I'm kinda a newbie when it comes to this stuff, but hey; I'm learning. Thanks guys!

Unfortunately, no; you would need to do a clean install, though, if you cant back up your data, you could create a second partition if you have the space, back up your data to the partition, and THEN run the clean install, that way you wont have to worry about losing your stuff.

But i think what i am going to do is just get the 32-Bit upgrade version and just do the basic upgrade since i'm pretty new to this. But i do have a question. Could i get the 64-Bit UPGRADE and use it to do a clean install? Or do i have to have the FULL 64-Bit version to. Because i watched a video of someone upgrading their Vista to 7, and they had a window come up to either do just the UPGRADE or do a clean install. This was with the RC version, but does the same apply to just the Upgrade version? Hope that makes sense...

You are new? A clean install is the same if 16 or 64? Back up your files. You are new you do not understand things?

I'm sorry but no, i do not understand these things. That's why I am asking for help from you people who DO know what you are talking about. So could i get the UPGRADE version of 64 and use it to do a clean install over my Vista 32?

Unfortunately, no, as NasGhost has explained above along with the picture in http://photos.pcpro.co.uk/blogs/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/windows-7-upgrade-chart.jpg

You CANNOT do an upgrade from Vista 32-bit to Windows 7 64-bit.

You will need to do a "clean install" which means you need to backup up your data before proceeding.

A clean install means you need to purchase a full licence of Windows 7 64-bit.

Hope that clears things up a bit for you.

For the record, using caps in an online medium is considered yelling and is found to be rude, and changing the color to something that sticks out makes it worse, and is in my mind, quite patronizing.

Sorry dude. I didn't mean it in that way at all... I put it in caps and red just so people would see i was talking about the upgrade version. I really didn't mean it in the way you described...

Well... I you can get the upgrade disk for Wondows 7 64 for $17.85 then just try it!

If I remember correctly an "upgrade" can only install the bit version the you currently have .. To change you bit version 32>64 you will need to do a clean install.

Hey pyroskier... I know how confusing it all seems but this chart might help

http://mossblog.allthingsd.com/files/2009/08/windows-upgrade-chart.png

If it lists it as an In-Place Upgrade, then you don't need to reinstall everything. If its listed as a Custom Install, then you need to do a fresh install.

the full version vs. upgrade version works like this: the full version will only do a clean install and only require the win7 disk. the upgrade version will do an upgrade (according to the above chart) for specific version to version OS OR it will do a clean install(custom install) from any xp or vista version... it will require a valid xp or vista key to install. all you need is a valid xp or vista key and that win7 upgrade disk should work

hope that makes sence :)

good luck

on a side note: I would really opt for the clean install. its a great chance to clean wipe all the bugs in a system, get rid of programs you don't use, and overall speed up a system. the process isn't that hard, just go to MSI's website and download all the drivers you will need for win7 and back up all your important information before you stick the disk in. then just keep clicking next :)

when you upgrade an OS you are depending on the designers to account for every piece of software/driver on your system. If they miss one thing, or your programs are incompatable with the new OS that when you start getting BSoD and lockups (this is one of the major reasons peeps had such a hard time switching to vista... the non-existant drivers)... overal a clean install will take a little longer to get setup, but will run MUCH smoother than an upgrade

*steps off my soapbox*

Thank you. And i was wondering if it is possible for me to get the Vista disk from xoticpc or MSI, because my laptop came pre-installed with vista and i didn't get the disk, but it would be nice to have backup with vista.

I would make a phone call if I were you. start with XoticPC, they are very friendly and very fast with there responce times. If they do not have the authority to ship you a disk, call MSI. they will most likely have some sort of backup disk they could send you (usually for a small fee.... $10 to $25) If they can't help you, you maybe could try microsoft directly.

Good Luck :)

Hey guys quick ("dumb") question here. Regarding systems coming out now that include the W7 upgrade coupon, will users be able to upgrade from Vista to the new OS right away ? :wideeyed:

I'm assuming if your system is ordered with Vista (w/win7 upgrade coupon) then you will recieve your copy of win7 in the mail sometime after Oct 22. I am guessing they will start selling systems with win7 native by late next week, perhaps early the following week.
