I'm looking for a lappy that will run Solidworks and won't give me a frame rate headache... Somewhere in the realm of 1,000 to 1,500 part assemblies before it starts to chop would be nice. My typical SW assemblies total around 500 to 750 parts so I have to create several files of separate sections. It should be able to play games aswell but SW is complete priority. Portability is also key, hence laptop.

I'm considering this system:

Sager NP5793
45nm T9300 2.5ghz C2D 6mb cache 800mhzFSB
512mb Quadro FX1600M ->(for 3D CAD rendering)
4gb DDR2 667mhz RAM
200gb SATA2 300 16mb cache HD

Would this system run a 3D CAD program *excellently*? My current desktop(5 years old, was pretty high end when I bought it) has a 3Dmark06 score of 334.... SW has a frame rate of around 1 frame per 4 seconds! The computers at school can only handle about a 200 part assembly.(2.13ghz C2D, 2gb RAM, -unknown video or other stats)

Also, what OS would be recommended? If Vista I'll go for Ultimate 64bit. Would XP be a better choice being more mature? I know XP will only get me ~3.2gb of RAM, that's ok.

I don't know much about solidworks, but are there any solidworks specific benchmarks out on the web? I just ordered a similar NP5793 with the 8800GTX card for Microstation/Geopak use. I went with the 8800 GTX card because the benchmarks (on the Bentley site) for that card were consistently higher than for the Quadro card.

Well, Solidworks relies on OpenGL(3D type stuff, verticies, curves, rounds, smooth parts...). You can do it using hardware with a Quadro card or software with a "gaming" card. But solidworks is also doing a lot of physics at the same time which is done soley using the CPU. If you lag down the CPU with OpenGL jargon, it will bottleneck the system and result in horrible frame rate, load times.. etc.

CINEBENCH R10 works good as it has a dedicated OpenGL test. I found the link to that test on this forum somewhere. My old computer... got a score of 850-ish on the OpenGL test.

Ok if that's an OpenGL app then I think it might work with the Sager models offered here.

I have a few older OpenGL games and most of them work if you stick to WHQL drivers. Modded drivers often don't seem include the OpenGL stuff, but occasionally they do.

I just ran CINEBENCH10's OpenGL test on my np9262 and got 4934 CB-GFX... BUT I certainly didn't shut down any background apps (and some flash app or firefox itself is using around 10% of my cpu).

I havn't installed Solidworks and tried it yet but I have run Cinebench R10 on my 5793 with the Quadro card. I'm getting about 4,500 points on average with the test run in normal operation(all functions and programs still active, fingerprint reader, msn, gmail, touchpad, etc..).

Basic System info:
T9300 2.5ghz C2D
Quadro FX1600M 512mb
Vista 64 ultimate
4gb ram
turbomemory

I'll post later on how Solidworks runs.

So far I've not been able to get Solidworks to run on Vista64. I think I've given up and going to wipe and install Vista32.

On that note, XoticPC guys, where would I find my Windows Key? I suppose I could just download a program to grab it off the registry, but still do you post it anywhere in the manual or anything?
