So this morning I tried connecting a NEC '17 monitor to the 8690 using the DVI>VGA adaptor (supplied with the system) and could not get it to work. The screen on the 8690 goes black and no video output to the external monitor at all...has anyone experienced this? Thanks.:wideeyed:

Make sure the DVI is set up to output analog signal. Not my area sorry can't help more.

Got it...Needed to lower resolution on 8690 to the screen's native resolution.:smile2:

For me it didn't help. I tried to change resolution (after a different problem that i had) but to no avail. I have to use the DVI to VGA adapter supplied, so maybe it has smth to do with "analog DVI output" pp was talking about. I couldn't find anything about it. not in the display setting and not in the nVIDIA control panel. any suggestion?

p.s.
I already tried another DVI to VGA adapter. I've tried connecting my desktop screen (not using the adapter) and it worked fine. I've also tried connecting the TV to my old laptop (no adapter needed - vga to vga) and it works great... this is why i think the analogsuggestion is best

Does your Plug look like this?

Or this?

Then you are only outputting digital and you need more than just an adapter. You need a converter.

I just came to the forum to post the same or similar problem. I am attempting to connect a projector to the laptop (8690) and I can sometimes get the display on the projector but not the laptop.

There are other projectors I have tried where I cannot get image to show on the projector at all and the laptop screen goes black.

For one projector, if I plug the projector into the laptop before plugging the projector into a power outlet it will show on both screens (laptop and projector) when I power up the projector. However, if I try to change the resolution (the projector picture is too small), I then go black on the laptop.

I have called tech support and explained the problem. They said they would get back to me. They eventually left me a message saying that they think they know the problem but would get back to me. That was 2 days ago.

Edit: To answer the question above about the plug, my laptop plug looks like the second one but I think it is actually a DVI-I (the picture looks like DVI-D).

@krforrester: this is excactly my problem. when I'm finally able to see anything on my laptop screen, I can't change the resolution it broadcasts to the external monitor. It's stuck on 1920X1080 as the lowest resolution available.
My port and adapter supplied both have DVI-I connectors. My older adapter is DVI-A. I get the same outcome with both.
Do you use vista or W7?

A tech support guy from nvidia forums is trying to help me with that, but still no solution.

I resolved my problem by getting a USB video adapter. Unfortunately it cost me $54 at Fry's but it works great and was easy to use. Here is a link:

If you go that route, make sure you get the right drivers from the web if you are running Vista or W7 64.

[amdolev I sent you the above information in response to your pm also].

I got a mail from Sager requesting me to delete my installed drivers (the ones I originally got with the laptop) and to install the drivers supplied with the disc. They are both 186, but one is .47(disc) and one is .81(supplied).

So now it works great! I'm so relieved!

I followed your lead and just installed the drivers from the CD that came with the computer and now everything works fine. Thanks.
