Centrino vs. Core Duo

I am helping a friend spec out a laptop. I have the 9262 with a Core Duo processor, which I am really liking. How do the Penryn or Centrino chips compare? Will it be a big difference between either of those and the desktop Core Duo chips?

There will be somewhat of a performance difference. The penryn's are the newer style 45nm processors which will enable them to run cooler. You can also view here (http://www.xoticpc.com/intel-shows-penryn-chips-a-39.html) for an article on the penryn processors

Penryn CPUs will run cooler(will output less heat) and will require less power. So the improvement is especially good for laptops.

Depending on which processor your looking at, the penryn consumes around 1.062 - 1.150 V, 35w, where as your Q6600 uses 1.1 - 1.372 V, 105w (95w Q0 SLAQR). The Centrino platform integrates many functions into one, such as the wifi. In the long run, Centrino is far more power efficient. It cannot be upgraded. The Q6600 should be able to support drop in upgrades to the Q6700 and any future CPU Sager releases a BIOS update for. If power is all that matters, I'd say go with the Q6600.
