Erm. Why is the Nvidia card more money? The ATI one is better?

Hey justin. Now that we have a system that uses both cards. Can we get a comparison between the two. I would really be interested in seeing how the a laptop with just a video card difference would perform on various benchmarks. It would put a real world numbers to it.

I almost bit but then considered the total price. It is awesome that it has the 820 standard but then going up to 8GB of RAM and adding two 500GB 7,200RPM HDDs brings it WAY up in price. I guess I'll keep waiting for my G73 Phase 2 notification!

Ayep, the same. The price difference between the G73 is still very significant. It just cant be matched. Nice that the offer is there though now.

You know, sometimes I wish you guys just sold 1 laptop and we all had to buy it... :(

Halaster I agree price cannot be matched on the default configuration. But as I have pointed out in the past a CPU upgrade is much cheaper on the Sager. w/920XM Sager is cheaper similar config vs G73 w/920XM.

Very true, any sort of CPU upgrade at all and the G73 is no longer the best value, due to overly expensive upgrades (thanks ASUS). :D

I just ordered the 8690 yesterday too...

I must be the first customer for this since I noticed it before this post and jumped on it. So whoever ordered a G73 after February 5th I just did you a favor by switching my order over .

Sure it's a lot more money but this will be a dev machine more often than a gaming machine for me so having things like RAID 0 for my SSDs is worth it. As to why the ATI card is cheaper..... in general it's cheaper to fab the 5870 than the 285M plus the latter card is probably running into supply issues at this point so if you know economics then this should make sense. I'm sure Nvidia have something coming down the pipeline to address this issue like a die shrunk 200 series to be called a 3xx mobile part.

Call them up and see if you can switch. They had me call them today before progressing to make sure I didn't miss anything in my order so you might have time.

Likewise 1333MHz SDRAM comes standard. Upgrading to 8GB is pretty expensive but very few people need that much (I'm a hardware designer and don't need that much so gamers certainly don't need it....) There are many ports on the Sager laptop that don't come on the G73 so that is also a key selling point for some.

damn...

Office is closed now and order is in Phase 2. I'll try tomorrow morning.
Unless someone has a good reason not to switch to the 5870.

They changed the blu-player to a 4x (up from 2x), so that's a little disappointing too.

No reason not to switch.
Don't get me wrong the 285m is a great card but the HD5870 is just better + you get DX11 goodness.

done.
They had me order a new one and just write a comment to cancel the previous order.

Upgraded the shipping with money saved ;)

Well that doesn't work. Unless Justin was to give me the same setup and price for the NP8760, then I would consider it!
NP8690-$2467, losing 17.3 display and extra HDD.
NP8760-$2690

Ya, I know I'm dreaming!!!!!

Here are some benchmarks of the 5870 vs 285M in both the 8690 and 8760 FYI. Enjoy! :D:D

Anyone have any input why the CPU score is more than 50% lower with the ATI card over the Nvidia card ?

That is a pretty huge difference. :)

powerpack
03-04-2010, 09:12 PM
Good question. But since the same CPU hardly think it matters. Also if you want to play Dirt2 get the 285 but 4850 wins on DX11.:D

Justin@XoticPC
03-04-2010, 11:41 PM
The CPU score is likely because pf PhysX.

Halaster
03-05-2010, 12:40 AM
Ahh yes, that would be it for sure. I did not realize that ran a Physx test also as part of the CPU suite. Thanks for the answer so late at night, go to sleep, haha. :D

The nvidia cards get massive performance boosts over the ATI cards on things that actually use Physx.

PhysX and CUDA are two of the key reasons I "generally" go with Nvidia, and they tend to be overlooked by review places as if they do not exist for some reason when comparing the cards, heh. Just like I overlooked it now.

I would be interested in switching even if it was more expensive.....BUT I like the G73 because it is quiet. Quietness is one of the main factors that I look in gaming notebook (which does not come often).
The notebook is usually sit right next to you so the noise from the fans can
be distracting.

How is the noise level of the Sager NP8690and NP8760 compared to the G73?....in terms of decibels.

Well, I placed my order last Thursday for the 8690 and just got the notification today that the 285M isn't available...rolling the dice with an ATI :( I haven't had an ATI video card in what seems like forever!

Bummed I'll be losing PhysX and CUDA support.

Hey guys.

Placed my order for a NP8760 with the HD5870 last Monday. On Tuesday I was notified that it had gone into production and would be ready to ship in 3 - 7 business days. Yesterday I received a notification stating that the laptop is on back order until the end of March and my order will be completed then.

Just wondering how it went from being in production to being on back order? I was informed it was in stock on Sunday and I placed an order the very next day - did inventory on this one really go that quickly? Is anyone else in the same boat?

I am in the same boat. It was a bit frustrating since I decided to switch over from the Asus hoping to get a laptop quickly

Hehe, same here - feel a bit better knowing I'm not the only one. I guess I have to go away on business next week so I wouldn't be able to play with it anyway. Should be more than worth the wait when it finally arrives.

I just borrowed a bunch of new Xbox 360 games from my brother so I should be able to keep myself busy until either laptop arrives :)

My timeline:
Ordered my NP8760 on March 3rd
Moved to phase 2 on March 4th
Received notification of 285M delay on the 11th (replied back the same day that the ATI was OK)

Do you guys think I'm I looking at 3 - 7 business days from the 11th or from the 4th?

powerpack
03-15-2010, 09:55 PM
Yea unless Xotic said different? I think 11th? I mean the 4th + 7 is passed? The 4th passed 11 passed today?

Just in case anyone is waiting or wondering about when they may see their 8760s, I got notified today that my order was ready to ship. I customized it to get the 500 GB 7200 RPM HD and the 4X Blue Ray. It was customized that way at Sager so Xotic said it was available for immediate shipping. I can't believe my wait will be over soon :)

So, are the NP8690s/NP8760s that are being delayed the GTX285m models, or are both being delayed?

It's not a huge deal to me, I'm just curious.

Well, I got an order status update today, saying that Sager is out of stock of the NP8760. ETA is end of march, which should be sometime this week. Here's hoping the parts arrived when they estimated!

The impression I got was that USB 3.0 probably isn't coming standard on notebooks until Sandy Bridge / 2011. But Seagate already has a USB3 Express Card adapter out now, so I wouldn't let that dictate your purchase.
