How true is it that you are not able to change your desktop background on the Starter edition of Windows 7?? I haven't really tried. I have the Ultimate version but a friend of mine was grumbling about it.
oh wow. if that's the case, i think it's a basic function, am i right? i don't get why they won't allow that.

For whatever reason MS disabled the function to change the desktop back ground. In some cases some people have had limited success using stardock themes to change it, in my case that didn't work. I am assuming you are using a netbook and that starter came pre-installed? if so it might be worth looking at http://cid-e2e0fbb97504d64e.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/.Public/Starter%20Wallpaper%20Changer.exe?sa=763010799 (use it with caution as I have not tested this program, scan it with a good scanner)

Windows Starter versions are meant for Netbooks since a Netbook lacks heavily in the video card and processor. The Intel Atom processor is just a smaller nm version of a much older processor and so they cut out all the "fluff" from the OS to avoid potential issues so the Netbook can remain somewhat "fast".
Netbooks are ONLY designed to do very simple tasks such as text docs, and basic web surfing, they can even suffer heavily from heavy flash applications like flash based games or even sites like YouTube or Facebook.
Netbooks also dont even have basic interfaces like a CD/DVD ROM drive and if you want to use one you have to buy an external, this is one of the main reasons I always suggest people go with a small laptop vs a Netbook. Netbooks are old tech in a new wrapper, for the price and whats inside you cant have high expectations, especially seeing what new phones can do (Like the Motorola Droid).

Thanks for the responses. My friend's netbook is actually an HP Mini 311. It's got this NVidia ION graphics card already which I could say is a good one for netbooks but still he said it came pre-installed with a Win7 starter.
Too bad that is actually the case. And yes. I would have to agree with going with a smaller laptop rather than a netbook.
