Yeah, that will be cutting it close. You can thumb through most of the post and find the folks that got the G73 and you will see pretty much most have been right on the two month mark.

Their has been disucssions that :XPCS: could recieve more in the next shipments, but that is just it, discussions. Xotic is a small company and I think somebody said something like 7 techs working, and lets not forget the other models they sell. But we can hope that MAYBE ASUS will send a few more in the next couple shipments to meet demand. That my friend is all we can hope for. Hopefully after the 4/29th shipment we will have a better idea of where we stand by how many folks go to Phase 2. So settle in and join the wait with the rest of us..:D

ok guys... so i was on the G73 all night last night pretty much just prepping the thing. here's a bit of a list..

reformatted and put the windows 7 disc that xoticpc shipped, rebooted when it asked for the driver disc then pick and chose based on a thread around here somewhere that described all the bloatware vs non bloatware.

patched it. windows security essentials. synaptics driver deleted and installed the version from synaptics. updated ATI driver to 10.3 (10.4a wouldn't install). experienced GSOD. became concerned about 1st experience of GSOD and began to realize that people were getting them that had 10.3 installed. uninstalled 10.3 back to the version that came on the asus driver disc. so far so good. so yeah.. avoid 10.3.

curious to know how fingersniffer got 10.4a installed? there was one other guy on the forum that had the same issue as me where it didn't want to update (telling us we were already at the most current version, etc)

installed games: bad company 2, metro 2033, crysis, WoW, starcraft 2 beta, dirt 2, team fortress 2, bioshock, mass effect 2

installed apps: steam, google chrome, firefox, itunes/quicktime, flash, shockwave, adobe acrobat reader, filezilla, putty, pscp, 7zip, java 1.5, java 6.0, tomcat 5.5, eclipse, mysql, java standard tag libraries, scratch live, rane ttm57sl driver(s), intervideo windvd bluray player (asus provided)

chrome plugin: firebug lite
firefox plugins: firebug, live http headers, modify headers, web developer

put in that registry fix that goes from 1 to 0 where when you hit caps lock in the middle of a game it won't pop up a notice in your face and f up your game.

did NOT install the creative suite due to the known conflict with steam.

still need to install/configure: cygwin, microsoft office, adobe creative suite, some more audio apps. sql server management studio, vmware, oracle weblogic 11gr1, mysql workbench, xming, ruby, windows powershell, textpad, remote printer

uhmmm... i think that pretty much covers it. must point out that during last nights marathon install session i experienced: 1 GSOD w/ATI 10.3 drivers before rollback, 3 hard lockups. 1 of them during the windows performance test where it grades your machine in that 'games' section and 2 of them seemingly random.. though i was taxing the system pretty rough.

started roughly 6p ended 4a.

honestly i think the lockups could be attributed to my driver swapping and massive install session while attempting minimal reboots.

I was informed after called the repair center that my lappy need a new video card! Asus has been responsive and hope this will get it fixed!

It seems to be a lot of issues with the video system and drivers!

Dont know how much of that is true, because 111 seems to long ...
111 may be a bit long, but maybe not. This video shows a ssd vs velociraptor and to get to the desktop its about 30s and 45s respectively, but to get everything fully loaded its about 35s and 65s respectively (keep in mind that g73 comes with slower hdd stock than that).

Just talked to Exotic, I am now Phase 2. I pre-ordered March 4. By the time I get my G73 it will have been 2 months, give or take a day or 2. When I ordered March 4, I thought no way would it take 2 months--Asus would have to speed things up. Way! Asus may be making more G73's, but I think they are the models going to BB and others. I hope you guys don't have to wait 2 months like many of us have, but don't count on getting it much sooner. Now I can start worrying about the problems some G73's have: keyboard, bios, audio, etc. I'm not a gamer, but my son is home from college next week and he is anxious to match it up against his Sager, so I have a feeling some games will "appear" on my G73. I want to thank UMI and kiwi for their work on the G73 waiting list--it helped to pass the time these long 2 months.

So other that the CCC driver, all went well with your fresh installation of WIN7. I ordered the disk too, and using the list for what bloatware to install. Everything works fine, like turbo boast and the keyboard lights?? And how did you delete synaptics driver, through the control panel or something else. I found the version from synaptics, just wondering how you deleted the driver from the ASUS installed driver.

yea when I went to install the new synaptics driver, it initially bitched at me that it was already installed or another version of it was installed.

i right clicked computer, properties, went to 'device manager', expanded out the mouse and right clicked on the synaptics driver and clicked 'uninstall'.

it still let me mouse around after the driver install which i assumed it would NOT so i had lined everything up where I could alt-tab and hit 'enter' to kick off the install (i like hotkeys anyways), but yea it still let me manipulate the mouse. i then reran the new synaptics installer and it went through fine.

and yes, outside of the funniness with the ATI driver stuff, everything was great. all my "fn" function keys work. the little notifications that show your 'fn' keypresses are doing something work and are actually pretty slick looking as well. yes. keyboard backlight and turbo and all that work correctly.

I was going through the ASUS site for the drivers and comparing them with the list in the forums, and all the versions are the same. So of going throught the list and downloading what I wanted, I just plan on using the drivers disk since those seem to be the current drivers.

And the device mangager is what I could not think of, thats where I plan on going before control panel. I did goolgle how to remove the drivers and it said go through control panel, but I think device manager in the better way to unintall drivers!!

Thanks for the info, and I hope you are enjoying your new G73. And on the CCC driver, Ill look at that once I get it and just reinstall that one after my fresh OS install. Im thinnking its 10.2, that would only make sence.

Just a word of caution on the 80GB SSD...I was absolutely convinced that 80GB would be enough. Thanks Slowboto :D Yes it's been extremely painful the "final stretch". Not so much the waiting, but rather the not knowing ("this shipment? Next shipment? Next month? When? Where?"). But it feels good to be in P2 now. I wasn't home when they called to confirm, and I had some issues with the credit card, but all appears to be well now. (by the way I spoke with Elizabeth on the phone, she was very nice and helpful. Seems all the staff at Xotic are)

Now I'm going to just be worrying about any issues during configuration.. I already have a flash drive with all my programs ready to be installed from it. I ordered the wireless upgrade and the 80GB SSD with my G73 so it'll probably take 5-10 days for setup and configuration.

Yeah, I've started ordering all my accessories to get things ready. Got a new external drive since my old one decided to suddenly die. Was going to start the rearrangement of my room this weekend but I have to head down to Florida tomorrow morning for a funeral so postponing until next weekend. At least it gives me another week to think about how I want to set it all up.

Is there any way to specify two different install locations for games from steam? Like, have game A download/install to the SSD and game B download/install to the spindle drive?

EDIT: I wonder if it'd be possible (assuming you had the drive caddy) to remove the optical drive, and in its place have another hard drive? I assume the optical drive on the G73 uses SATA for data transfer? Honestly I do not need an optical drive 90% of the time, a USB powered one would be plenty.

I don't know about the ODD but I would be interested to find the answer. Then again, Crysis, at least the way I have it installed, requires the disc to be in the drive. :mad:

Definitely. I changed mine many times. Infact my original order was an A1, and ten days later I changed it to an A2 with the SSD. If you ask them to preserve your space in line, they will. :) Then about two weeks ago or so, I added the wireless upgrade to my order as well. So I changed mine 3 times no problem, the Xotic staff are amazing about this kind of stuff.

111 may be a bit long, but maybe not. This video shows a ssd vs velociraptor and to get to the desktop its about 30s and 45s respectively, but to get everything fully loaded its about 35s and 65s respectively (keep in mind that g73 comes with slower hdd stock than that).

Haha, not nosy - I only went with one SSD and the 6200. The price of 2 SSD's would have just been too much for me, and I'd like to keep one of the 500gb HDD's so I can have some bulk storage (music and videos, mostly). The 80GB will be for the operating system, programs I use a lot (like web browser), and maybe a game or two.

You should do some research on SSDs. They are limited in their ability to handle write cycles, especially in the more common MLC based drives, however, it should not affect most users. There are a number of things that you can do to minimize the writes to the SSD and most of the current drives support TRIM to help reclaim space. This forum and the web at large has quite a bit of useful information.

If you're ordering the SSD conversion from Xotic, then no, there's no reason for a fresh install. Just uninstall the bloat and update any drivers that they missed. If you're doing it yourself like I did to keep the original primary HDD then you would be looking at a re-install. It took me less than an hour from the time that I opened the box to the time that it was ready to go.

Every drive has a lifespan, through rumor and misinformation SSD's are getting lumped into some bad drive group.

This information is simply not true, here are some facts:

1. SSD Drives have a longer lifespan outlook than traditional mechanical hard drives. So this is a non-issue, it only gets bad press because they can finally reliably measure the amount of writes and re-writes to a drive as with mechanical drives it varied too much to give an accurate picture.

2. With OS and HD firmware support for TRIM the current SSD drives are just fine, very early models had issues with limited re-writes but this has been resolved 6+ months ago.

3. Intel and OCZ drives are currently the best on the market, however Corsair and a few other vendors should be catching up pretty soon, if you need a drive "now" I would suggest Intel hands down, once Vertex II comes out then I might change my opinion to OCZ and maybe Corsair once they release their newest drives.

4. SSD drives do not suffer from the two top HD killers... Heat and Moving parts. They consume a fraction of the power which means they generate a fraction of the heat produced by mechanical drives. They also have zero moving parts so there is a lot less that can fail on an SSD drive compared to mechanical.

5. There are currently two types of SSD drives, SLC and MLC. SLC drives have faster read/write times but are currently smaller in storage space and cost considerably more. MLC drives are the current "mainstream" drives and offer more storage space and less cost than SLC drives.

If you want raw storage space then you want a traditional mechanical 7200 RPM drive, however I suggest using an 80g or 160g SSD for your primary OS drive as the performance increases are very noticable, especially in boot times and in application start times.

No, it isn't 30GB. I can't remember the actual size but I think it was less than 10GB.

ASUS express gate reminded me of my Dell Media Center Quickstart, a quick start linux based OS giving you access to basic media and the optical drive for DVD or CD playing without starting the OS.

It's because nothing about WMC is "thin" and would require many system resources, audio and video drivers, and audio/video codecs that often change depending on the media to be played, not something easily done within an instant start client.

i did download the DLC, but haven't played it yet. from what i hear the expansion isn't that long and may not be worth the price right now, but when it goes down it probably will be... (its all a matter of opinion though if the cost is worth it i guess cause i've heard both sides)

express gate is just a quick boot access to certain utils via linux.

it is not windows based at all. its for someone who spends more time on their computer surfing the web, using skype, or just watching movies off dvd/blurays or listening to a cd. its rather misleading in the way it is presented.


if you are using a ssd that could boot up in less then 20 sec do you really need a expressgate ?

I went from phase 1 to in my hands in like 7 business days. (1 weekend was in the middle) and all i had done to my N71 was the 6200 and a SSD. and the blu-ray swapped out for the DVD drive.

Definitely. I changed mine many times. Infact my original order was an A1, and ten days later I changed it to an A2 with the SSD. If you ask them to preserve your space in line, they will. :) Then about two weeks ago or so, I added the wireless upgrade to my order as well. So I changed mine 3 times no problem, the Xotic staff are amazing about this kind of stuff.

I asked them about changing to an A2 from an A1 and they said I would lose my place. That doesn't sound "amazing". :(

That's because the A1 and A2 are entirely different laptops that are shipped separately from the factory. You would probably keep your place in line if you just add a bluray player to the A2 they have reserved for you.

I guess changing from the more popular A1 model to an A2 is easier than the other way around. Last I heard there was more of a shortage with the A1s than the A2s.

Do your homework and figure out that the best buy version has much different specs (500gb HDD, 1.3megapixel camera, less ram, lower resolution screen, shorter warranty) It's not a problem with Xotic, the problem is at ASUS' level, they can't produce the A1 and A2 models fast enough to keep up with demand.

Of course Bestbuy gets it sooner than us, that's because ASUS will build more of the bestbuy models, because ASUS and bestbuy will both make more money from those...and not have to provide warranty for two years also. It's all just a big business, money making scheme.

not sure you got the point I was trying to make. expressgate has nothing to do with windows boot times. it is something entirely separate from window 7. it is an ASUS feature/utility that some seem to misunderstand what exactly it is.

i get it, i'm talking about storaging it on the ssd (asus expressgate), is a waste of space, should put it on the 2nd drive the HDD with 500g not on the 80g or 160 ssd

The G73JH-RBBX09 Model really saddens me, 1600$, low quality screen, and probably a cheep panel too. 1600x900 anyone :(?

No backpack, Mouse, or Blu Ray drive(a waste on a 1600x900 screen I suppose) and all of this knowing if you have a problem you'll have to deal with Best Buy's warranty support if anything ever goes wrong. I'm not sure if things have changed but when I worked for HP retail support BB was not even authorized to replace anything major like the screen, video card, or MB, so you have to wait almost twice as long to get your comp fixed. First you wait for Best Buy to ship it out(I've seen them take a week or more after making a work order), then you wait for it to get it back from the manufacturer.

Last and worst of all IMO is the warranty options. I travel a lot and my notebooks often get tossed around and abused quite a bit, so far I have been lucky and never had one break but I know many people that have, for me an accidental damage warranty is a must have. I picked up the 3 year from Xotic for 350$, well worth it for a piece of a mind. Want the same thing from BB? Not even an option, you can get a 2-Year Premium Protection Plan for $450 though.

Xotic has been great with prices, customization, and support so far. I'll stick it out with them.
