My first laptop buying experience didn't go too well, thought I was paying top dollar for a gaming multimedia laptop but ended up getting something that is plauged by bad fan location and throttling cpu/gpu.
My ultimate would be a battery that can last 3 hours, 1920x1080, ati hd5870, usb3.0, hdmi,

with your budget a Sager 8690 w/ 8GB DDR3, 500GB HDD, 1920x1080 screen and Win 7 Ultimate. That's my suggestion. I just got mine with 4GB of RAM and 320GB HDD and it is really a screaming good machine for a 15". plus I know if I want to I can get a BR drive later and have full 1080P on this screen.

Thanks, sounds like a good deal, i'm trying to envision the weight and portablility of that model, battery life ok? I was also eyeing the msi gt660 but that doesn't look like it will be out for a while.

The weight is a ton lighter than I imagined it would be as a desktop replacement. It weighs far less than my Gateway P-7805U did. So portability is good. Battery life is one thing I probably won't ever be able to give you a great answer on because I very rarely use it on battery since it is my desktop replacement. If I had to guess it is probably about 2 hours depending on what you are doing. You can probably watch one full movie and then be about 20% life left is my guess, assuming you aren't watching LOTR or something.
The other pretty nice thing about this laptop is that the finger print reader is really a nice feature. It is more secure than just a password login in some respects and that makes it nice should the unfortunate happen and it is stolen. I did a much more in depth answer on somethings over here (http://www.xoticpcforums.com/showthread.php?t=5085&page=7). Keep in mind I am mostly just a gamer with only a few side hobbies, but this machine seems ready to do it all.
Also for having a full size keyboard it really is rather compact. My Gateway would not fit in a standard 15" notebook carrying case or backpack even though it had a 15" screen and this one does.

Battery life: I went from 100% to 11% life remaining in about 1 hour and 24 minutes. Only use was web surfing. Keep in mind I use the bluetooth and the Wifi to connect mouse and internet respectively. Screen was dimmed most of the way down and was still easily readable. You can probably squeeze out a little over two hours if you properly break in the battery.

The 8690 sounds like a winner. Forgot to ask if it has a backlit keyboard, it's not a necessity but would be a nice touch. 1-2 hour battery life sounds reasonable, could always buy a new batt for trips. Don't need the bluray will have to think about getting the 820 upgrade. Is it much of a difference from the 720 for the price increase?

The 8690 is great got mine last week and I am very satisafied with it. Battery life I'm getting an 1 hour to close to 1 1/2 hours before recharge but that's not a big of a deal to me.

With your spending money that you got I would upgrade to the 820 for 155 as opposed to other models asking for much more then that
