Hi guys,
I been having the ASUS G51-VX-A1 laptop for like 6 months now and primarily use it for 3D applications/rendering/photoshop/after effects and occasionally light gaming. I am having problems with this as it becomes really hot as I am using it on High Performance all the time as I need that performance. It becomes so hot that when I put my hand at the vent, I could get my hand burned if put for some time. And also sometimes the notebook just shutdowns and restarts itself. Is it because of the overheat issue? This happens not often but am curious why such thing will happen.
What solutions can I do to do to help it not overheat and burn in the long run? Should I buy a notebook cooler and which do you guys recommend? Will there be a performance upgrade with using a notebook cooler?
On another note, I can't seem to install XP64 on this machine and get to the BSOD. Do I have to disable anything from the BIOS or I just have to use nLite and add the ASUS drivers and make a custom OS package to load at boot time?

First, if you do some research you will see that the G51 has bad heating issues. You should try some thermal paste on the CPU and GPU. Also, get a notebook cooler. These should lower the heat quite a bit and hopefully improve performance.
As far as the XP64 issue, I've never seen this before. I would think that maybe CD is bad and loading corrupted files, because you shouldn't have any problem loading it. Unless you're doing a dual boot, that could be an issue.

Hi there, thanks for your reply. I know that the G51 has bad heating issues. I have never tried opening the laptop up and not really sure how to operate laptop hardware (more familiar with desktop hardware). Maybe another problem is the RAM issue or something? I think I should run a memtest86 to check whether theres a problem or reseat problem? I feel my laptop is kinda slow for 3D applications. Is there any tweaks I can do to really improve the performance of the laptop?
And yeah any particular good notebook cooler brand and model you guys recommend for this laptop?
As for XP64, I am on Windows 7 and want to install XP64 on a different partition on the other drive but each time I load the CD in the boot time, after the setup loads the files, it goes straight to a BSOD and I have to turn off and on again. Kinda confused. The laptop doesn't allow dual boots?

Your RAM SHOULDN'T be a problem...shouldn't being keyword here. The heating issues can really impact performance (i.e. hotter runs slower, cooler runs faster). 3D applications can really make a laptop run hot if it's not being cooled properly. The G51 has fan issues and what not as you know, so you have to take extra steps. You should really look into the thermal paste (usually costs like $35 tops and is easy to install once you know what you're working with). Tearing down a laptop isn't too difficult and very similar to a PC; same essential parts just compacted tightly together. I'm sure there's a walkthrough/guide for the G51 and its complete tear down.
As far as the notebook cooler, go to newegg, check out the ones there that will fit your laptop and read the reviews. You'll want to make sure your CPU or GPU or whatever is getting on hot on the bottom is near the part of the cooler that actually is doing the cooling or it will be waste of money.
I've never heard of a machine NOT allowing dual boot? Did you format the partition you're trying to put it on and make sure it's a clean partition with not other windows on it?

Ahh I see.. sounds good on the thermal paste...Checked that Arctic MX-3 would be a good one for my G51. I checked newegg..not really much reviews for the G51VXA1 and on notebook coolers. Isn't there any official ASUS coolers? I seen the Coolermaster (http://www2.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=40998) and Zalman (http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=38302&vpn=ZM-NC1500B&manufacture=ZALMAN%20TECH) coolers around. Seems good but not really sure. Not sure if they can fit my laptop.
Yeah I formatted the partition and it is clean with no other windows. But the thing is I can't even get to the stage where I can select a partition to install XP. After the first "Setup is Loading files" screen, before I see the screen where I have options, I just get the BSOD. I checked on google and it seems its like a common issue on laptops for XP64. Thats weird.

I am not sure why my post didn't go through...weird...but well yeah I formatted the partition on the other drive and it doesn't have any information on it. Its clean. I tried checking newegg for notebook coolers for the ASUS G51 and seems that I didn't find any reviews though. How do I know what kind of notebook cooler that will fit for me? As long it fits a 15.6" laptop, it should be ok?
I will try probably getting the thermal paste and figure out putting it on the cpu and gpu. I heard arctic mx-3 is good for paste?

Arctic is good. And yeah, generally any cooler that fits a 15.6" notebook should work. Again, read the reviews before purchasing. As far as applying the thermal paste, if you're unsure, get with someone who's fairly knowledgeable and can help you. A lot of the time they come with instructions on how to apply it.

i strongly recommend NZXT but one with 3 fans
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834997340&cm_re=nzxt_3_fans-_-34-997-340-_-Product
im using it for almost 2 years no any problem with yet, my g50vt never have hitting problem and GPU never go more than 87'C even after 8h playing in extreme turbo mode

AC5 is good but might want to look into IC Diamond if you are going to make the effort. I do not know about your model but look into UV.

I have the G51 JX-A1 and it also gets pretty hot. I took the xoticpc upgrade on the heat paste on the cpu and gpu before it was shipped (Diamond brand iirc).
You do need to keep your hand away from the vent. However I use it on a Zalman NC-1500 cooler and so far it has not shut down due to overheating.
I use mine for online and offline gaming, 3-8 hours at a time to give you a comparison to your usage. Hope this helps.

laptop cooler is pretty cheap these days... I that too much heat is really bothering, you may also have to check if your fans are in top condition...

Tarfun, so you recommend the Zalman NC-1500 cooler for ASUS G51s? Yeah I put my hand at the vent and it gets so hot that my fingers could get burnt. And also being a notebook noob, how do I check the fans are ok? Just check for clogging dust on it and just remove it? I removed the back plate of the notebook and saw a fan there.. is there anything else I should check? Do I need to unscrew anything to clean fans or apply thermal paste? Thanks.
