Did you check the volume setting in Windows as well as the volume on the machine itself? Sometimes Windows is set to 'mute all' out of the box. Don't ask me why though! If that doesn't fix it, you might be sending her back....

After doing a clean install it should have reverted any Windows based volumes changes, only thing I could see is a manual volume control on the laptop.

Otherwise it's time to check with MFG tech support.

Hey Finger, not to get off topic but I noticed you have IC Diamond in your signature. You know that they aren't upgrading the thermal compound in the G73 unless you are upgrading the CPU, right? Or are you planning on doing it yourself? Just checking, not insulting.

is the "manual" volume the one in the keyboard? the key with "fn"? if it is then i have done it already and already check the mute things... jst went to asus here in dubai for the techs to check.. but the problem is they dnt have parts for the g73jh because it is not yet release here in dubai... , and at first it was a little funny because they dont know that the laptop was asus lol. hopefully they will fix it or somehow.. because ive waited for this laptop to arrive for a very long time then when it finally arrives it has some defects.... *so sad*

Hey honkhonkhonk, did you have any customizations done or is it stock?? I'm customizing my wireless card so the lappy gets QA'd and I'm just kind of hoping that yours was stock.

Call Justin, have him walk you through the troubleshooting process for your speakers. I'm not familiar with win7 yet....he had a good idea for upping your speaker volume for winvista.

Not to hijack this thread but I made my sig when that was a part of my original order (was an option when I ordered) and I neglected to adjust it. However I have been considering a few modifications like thermal compound replacement to Silver 5 or IC after I get it.

I think you guys might have missed where he said he did a fresh install of Windows 7, and by default no sound is muted in Windows unless there is no sound driver, and he stated he installed drivers for it.

After the re-install of Windows and driver/BIOS updates the only reason left would be some physical problem with the sound card or speakers or a manually controlled volume on the laptop itself.

I'm not ruling out user error but from what steps he said he has taken I think its pretty safe to rule out the OS as the cause.

But now that I think about it, have you checked your BIOS to make sure that the sound card is turned on and settings are correct? If it is disabled the sound card will not function, but then again it wouldn't work via HDMI or headphones either... hmm, unless they were controlled by another driver set. (Sorry, tryign to run through a troubleshooting scenario in writing lol)

But ya, I think its a physical issue most likely, be it motherboard connections or faulty speakers.

Check volume if it's not off then go to start control panel and check in volume box and see if it's not set to mute from volume control panel. If this all didn't work for you then go to control panel device manager and see the properties of your sound card most likely if drivers and missing or irrupt reinstall driver and you should be good to go.

yea he already did that, he also stated sound works fine with a head phone. Most likely its bad hardware, in the form of speakers that are either bad or not connected correctly inside.

Just to be sure that it isn't a hardware problem... why don't you try installing a linux? It suspect it can be an absolute hell to get the video card working and actually see something (Ati doesn't seem to have released the propietary driver, and no idea about the radeon and radeonhd any way...) and perhaps even to make it sound even if the hardware works, but you know, it has a lot of testing software. Better trying than waiting until your local ASUS recognizes your kid as his...
