Look at the X1 on newegg. I think it has the blu-ray and only 1 HDD.

Not sure what notebook you're looking at, but the X1 has the 5870...
Here's the link (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220695)
If you can find the X2 version it comes with at Blu-Ray and a single HDD

It's also important to note that the A2 and A1 comes with decent priced mouse and backpack while the X1/X2 don't.
P.S. : I don't know why but newegg is usually good on deals but they are WAY OVERPRICING the X1..1,599? I paid 1549 for A2 which gives me extra HDD, Mouse and Backpack lol

I think because that might be the ACTUAL MSRP on the notebook?? Only reason I didn't mention either of the A models is because he specifically stated that he didn't want a second HDD.

I have encountered many things over the years on Newegg that are over priced.
Almost every time it is brand new hardware that is in short supply.
With the initial release they will charge a significant premium over what they normally charge, and a month or so it will drop down to their normal price level.
Have seen it on motherboards, CPUs, specific monitors, and video cards in the past.

You're going to have a tough time finding that combo for that price range. Most laptops in that range will have the i5 but probably the 4870 card or a compareable Nvidia.

I think it comes with the 280 card right? That one isn't as good as the 5870. The 5870 is the best one on the market right now AND it comes with DX11, it's the only card that does. The G51 runs hot, so you'll want to add thermal paste as an upgrade and try to get a cooler for it.

Here's the thing about cards. The nvidia cards are just as decent as the ATI cards. It's just dependent on what you personally want. If you want to be able to play everything in Ultra high god mode settings or some shit then u need ATI 5870 if you are okay with say not being able to see the TEXTURE on a effing leaf on the ground in a game then go with nividia gtx 280/285 and stuff they are still really good.
P.S. if you can't find what you are looking for on this website try out cyberpowerpc.com they have good configs for laptops there too. I was actualy gonna purchase one from there before I found out about the G73.
Also Nvidia cards are supposed to have better drivers as well in general.
You can also wait for the new Nvidia line up to release for notebooks. They will have DX11 support and will be better than the 5870.

That last part is speculation. No one will know until we have benchmarks. I will say taht I USED to LOVE Nvidia. I absolutely loathed ATi. Now, I'm the exact opposite. Nvidia has just been rebranding their cards (i.e. 260m = 360m) and not coming out with anything new. ATi, USED to have crappy drivers, etc. but they've gotten CONSIDERABLY better over the years while Nvidia's drivers have seem to just fall to sh!t. ATi has open source drivers so there's more community support there, while Nvidia refused to become open source. It's all opinion, honestly, on who's better. Just gotta do some looking around. Nvidia has Cuda, ATi is build on OpenCL.

the 5870 is not the only card with DX11. but ATI cards are the only one with DX11. the 5730 in my upcoming n71 has DX11. if not mistaken any of the 5000 series ATI cards are dx11.

all the 5000 series support dx11, but the higher end ones support all the features or something. too many versions of similar cards makes me confused. lol.
and the gtx740 will be shipping in early may. I considered it, too. but Justin W, said they changed from march to may for shipping.
looking at the amd/ati website, only 5400 series and higher are dx11.

ok is it just me or does best buy have a sweet deal (not available yet but)
ck the G73JH-RBBX05 $1,199.99
the only difference between this and its big brother is instead of 1TB hard drive it has 500gb and instead of 8gb system ram it has 6
other one is 1,599.
only thing is the bb warranties are expensive to get additional years
$1200 is tempting though. not sure if i should get that or thru this site
i really dont need the 1 tb hdd space i would like blu ray but looks like u cant drop the second drive on this site i dont think

Hey Halaster, I've been reading up about the other G73JH models and I don't quite understand the lower resolutions. Does it make sense to anyone that it would have the 5870 and (as far as I can tell) the same LCD but a lower resolution? I'm not convinced that those specs are correct.

Did you managed to find a place that listed it as the same LCD ?
I could not find anywhere that specifically listed that the LCD is the same, only a bunch of different places that listed it as a lower resolution.
It makes about as much sense to me as using a motherboard that does not support raid in a laptop that has two hard drives, heh.

best buy models tendto have lower everything compared to models available through resellers like xotic, etc.
I double checked best buy's website and it does say 1600x900.
and I also checked asus's site http://usa.asus.com/product.aspx?P_ID=8je5Ot4HBnKOdT81
under tech specs it has both resolutions listed. and multiple i3 and i5 processors listed. and dvd option, too.

No wait? Hmm, you'd have to ask Joe or one of the Justins what they have pre-configured and ready to go out. Since they're customizing so many machines, I'd have to imagine that the wait on everything is a bit long. If they have something ready to ship then that's probably the only way to get something quickly.

It's not bad, but with the Asus you get a bigger screen resolution, an extra HDD, double the RAM, a mouse, and backpack. Those easily jump the MSI up another 400-500 dollars putting it in the 2k range. Also, the Asus runs so cool due to it's design. The MSI isn't bad, though. It's actually a great set up.

@bling
A little off topic but.....IMO a blu-ray is not necessary, unless you do alot of travelin'. The way i see it is im not gonna use something if i dont have to. I have 2 other computers with blu-ray drives and I STILL went to best buy and got an actual blu-ray player. i went for their insignia brand their "own brand" witch is actually brands like lg, panasonic, samsung, etc. rebranded with "insignia". I got a player for $43+tax. and its actually a LG! just got lucky i guess. I just dont like wearing shit out prematurely. and you should check out notebookcheck.net
They have a huge list comparing all the mobile video cards, FPS on most popular games, & all the specs of the actual card itself also.
@ the thread
I was thinking about the best buy $1200 version. but for me its really about that resolution. doesnt sound like much but it makes a diff to the folks that actually get off on that type shit. i remember when i got my fist hdtv it was only 720p, and man did it look better than 480, now like a year later my buddy had went and got a 1080p hdtv and i immediately left his house and drove 45min to the nearest best buy and tv dealers. but i have got to say that i thrive off digital stimulation:eeek2: lmao.
so the only reason I would think someone would WANT the BBg73 is FPS maybe? just not worth it to me.

Anyone that makes electronics purchases from Best Buy isn't very informed. I used to work there and outside of items I know they make no profit on (Games, DVD, CD's) I simply will not shop there.
This is for many reasons, mainly because their staff are uneducated morons who will lie (and often told to lie by management) to sell you something you don't want nor need, and sadly they aren't even commission. Best Buy's Geek Squad are some of the most incompetent people I've ever seen, taking weeks to do simple things like putting in a hard drive and not even doing it right etc. The products they carry are usually lower quality and cost more than a better version (IE the G73). There are always better retailers to visit and if that fails you can always get exactly what you want at the best prices online, without the retail price hike.

I appreciate this post so much. I was literally at BB today and stumbled upon the chopped up G73. I couldn't for the life of me figure out the price difference besides the 2 gigs of ram, no blu ray, 1 less 500gb HDD no mouse and backpack, I was willing to save 400 bucks.
I got to the register and for some reason my card declined and they said id hsve to come back in tomorrow. Good thing for me! I didn't even notice the screen resolution wasn't 1080p! Sneaky sneaky. Don't fall for that trap unless you really can't wait.

That's right. The woman I spoke to was very knowledgeable about ASUS and my final question before I went to check out is, "its full HD right?" She said YEP and I proceeded to checkout. I guess it was a sign my card didn't. Work no matter how pissed I was in the store.
Either way, that machine would have ended up back on the shelf, not on my desk.

I worked for BB many years ago and still have some friends in management there and I can tell you that BB used to be one of my top go to retailers for electronic but now I wouldn't go there if you paid me. They are often told to lie or mislead the customer about products, services, warranties and to "upsell" everyone, even though the sales staff are not commission they are pushed to hit "numbers" that they might as well be.
Recently, my girl (without my knowledge) went to BB to have 4 speakers installed and her windows tinted (ya I didn't know they did windows either). They quoted her a 4.5 hour job @$900, the total install time took 9.25 hours. In the process they broke her factory door tweeter and gave her a choice: They would kick $40 off the bill and she could go buy a new tweeter from the dealer herself or they would order it from the dealer, they ensured her several times and pushed her to let them pay her $40 for the tweeter telling her that it wouldn't cost very much, she insisted they replace it themselves. Come to find out the tweeter was $120 from the dealer and quoted BB 10 days to have it in, well she got it yesterday 2.5 months AFTER the original install. The day after the install she said the front speakers were so quiet she couldn't even hear them and that the tinting was messed up on at least two of the windows. When I went out to inspect the work they had done in the sunlight they had scratched her front passenger window (the same one that they broke the tweeter on) on the outside of it, and 3 of the windows that were tinted (out of 5 total windows) was messed up. So I took it back up to them and told them the issues and also found and told them they lost one of the fabric screws that holds up the fabric in the trunk along the side, which made it fold over and fall down. They tried to tell me that the bubbles in the tinting would go away in a few weeks (which in most cases is true) but these bubbles were 2-5in in diameter and simply horrible looking, so they agreed to re-tint the front two windows and refunded the cost of the window tint. I was satisfied with this at the time and left the car for them to work on it. I pick up the car that evening and drive it home, I still cannot hear the front to speakers and now the rear right speaker is cutting in and out.
So, I take the car back a third time and again tell them about the speaker issues and suggest to them that they might have the line out converter installed incorrectly and might not have the amp adjusted properly (I did some car stereo install back in the mid 90's) they, of course, blew me off and i again left the car with them to fix the problems. By this time I was speaking with the store manager about the issues I was having and she didn't seem to concerned, about all I got was "Let me talk to the installers and find out whats going on". So I get the car back again and I can now hear the front speakers, just barely, and they seemed to have fixed the rear speaker. Still unsatisfied with the sound of the front speakers I talk to the store manager again and I am told that I should bring the car in again, I ask why I should bring it again again for a fourth time when the first three they were too incompetent to fix the issues. So again she says she needs to talk with the installers.
Well in the mean time I take the car to a reputable stereo shop here in town and decide to buy a radio for my girl's car, they go to install it and about 5 minutes later they ask me to come in back. They have the kick panels pulled off and the dash pulled apart and are showing me how BB has wired up the line out converters and amp. So I take video and pictures on my phone and make sure to include the melted RCA wires (Yes, melted, in 20 years I've never seen an RCA cable connection melted before) and how they had connected the line out converters backwards which would explain the front speak issues as evidence to show the BB manager. So I immediately call the store manager again and tell her whats going on, and I tell her I'm going to have these guys pull everything BB did out and replace it with products they sell and the manager says "OK, bring it all back and I'll give you a full refund" so I tell her ok I will be there tomorrow morning and proceed to have them pull everything out, costing me an additional $200 for them to fix the butcher job in BB wiring method. So they finish the install and everything sounds great as it should have sounded when BB did it the first time.
So I go back to BB the next day to return everything as per the agreement with the store manager and the customer service person informs me that she is on vacation and has no knowledge of them doing a full refund, and that they will not refund the install fees. So i force them to call the store manager at home while on vacation to confirm, and the store manager changes her story from full refund to "We will not refund the install since we cannot verify what your saying" I offered to show her and any manager in the store the pictures and video of how it was wired and then asked why she didn't tell me this when I spoke with her yesterday, her reply was the same thing she had just said. So I go back and forth with her trying to get the money back out of this and she hangs up on me mid conversation. So then I'm trying to deal with the management in the store and finally give in and tell them I just want to return the speakers and amp and I will contact corporate about the rest of this. So they process the return and I leave. I wait 2 weeks for the money to be returned and nothing, so i call again and speak to the store manager and they informed me they voided the return. I ask why they would do that, they said it was because there was a piece missing, I tell them their wasn't, and I told them that when I processed the return they had an audio installer come and verify everything was there. They insist that there is a piece missing, so I go back up there and have them show me everything I returned, then they cant find the items I returned. So I tell them they need to refund my money in cash right there unless they can prove there is something missing, they refused.
So I come home and call their corporate offices and talk to several people and they seem more than willing to help and then they call and talk to the store manager, she spins them an entirely different story and tells the people at corporate that they called the police and there is a report, so they call me back and tell me this and I'm like WTF!!! a police report? For what?? they don't know what the police report was for or what it said, so I ask for the report number so i can go to the police station and get a copy for myself, they don't have a police report number to give me. So I wait several days and again ask for the police report number so I can verify this, they still don't have one to give me. So in the meantime I write a huge wall of text in an email that makes this post look like a one liner explaining everything that has happened, a week later we get a call from a corporate manager telling me this is the most horrible thing she has ever read and she will do everything she can to make it right. So she calls around talks to managers etc and she calls back and tells me that they will be refunding every dime of the cost, so I'm like that's great and she even said she would send me a $50 gift certificate to use at any of their stores as an apology.
So then I get a call a few days later by the same woman and they have now changed their story, now they will only refund the products that were returned and not the cost of install. So I'm like WTF, you already told me you would refund everything and I know this line is recorded so I have proof, then she tells me they reviewed everything again and the store manager is refusing to process a full refund. I ask them who is in charge, corporate or a store manager, and they say the corporate office is in charge but the decision is final.
So now I'm out about $350 in install fees and $200 for the other shop to fix what BB had screwed up, so that is the tale on why I will never visit another BB every again. I'm in the process of disputing the charges with my bank, but it doesn't look good for me. I'm not suggesting anyone not visit BB, but rest assured that given long enough, you too will have this same experience from them.

Yes, the BB version of the G73 is a huge joke and a huge insult to anyone they sucker into buying it.
Let me clear my throat.......I bought 2 of the BB g73.....One was for my gf, the other was for my 11 yo daughter. They wanted something(anything) to play games on. After watching them play, I can honestly say that their picture looks great!!! They get the same cooling, 1 500gb hd(which is more than enough) and I get to be hero for a day!!! They didn't have to wait 2 months (like I did) but, you guys are right...NO BACKPACK AND MOUSE!!!!:cry: I went to Wal Mart and bought them both a mouse, for $13 a piece and 2 backpacks for around $20...Boy do I feel like I got ripped off!!!! Man, if I would've listened to all you guys...I would be living in the dog house right about now. BTW, I ordered an A2 from Xotic, and I have had a shit load of fun on it. But, honestly my other ones look just as nice, play the same games and will do Everything that mine will do. I have a little more room (2 hdd) a little better camera(don't use anyway) and little better resolution screen. But, how much is your time worth to you? Sorry, but when people call me a moron for shopping at BB, well, start by kissing my ass and work you way down from there:mad:

The headache you have is one the you deserve. Never let a woman handle things like car repair....we could go on on on on on on on on on on about horror stories, but ALL shops take advantage of women!!!! Next time do it yourself. I do all my own car repairs and I have my cuz do all my puter repairs (those that I can't do myself) I have to go to alabama this weekend and fix my gf's air conditioner. The shop wants $1200 to fix it and I can do it for less than half!!! Your woman needs to be slapped in the back of the head!!!!

Like I said, she did this when I was out of town for two days, as soon as she told me I winced in pain, I knew this wouldn't end well. She has learned her lesson. She usually isn't one for impulse buying but the one time she did it, she has paid for the mistake in full and with our money. I used to do all my car stereo installation but anymore its such a pain running wiring in a vehicle due to lack of space its just worth it to me to pay a quality installer to do it, like the ones that put in her radio and new speakers/amp. They do great work and back it up with a good warranty.
As for general car repair, you need so many damn specialized tools anymore its not worth it for the occasional shadetree mechanic to invest in them. I pay some schmuck to do it for me lol. But your right, doing it yourself gives you a sense of pride and the knowledge that it was done right, for me its just how much money is my time worth and having free time isn't usually time I want to spend under the hood. But computers, I'll always do my own work... it is my job after all.. and my company buys all my tools related to it for me so I spend their money freely lol.

Best bet is to find a reputable car stereo shop, the stereo equipment will probably be more than what BB charges but you win when they install it right.

Damn finger, that was a hell of a horror story you had with BB.
I used to love them but slowly I've been realizing certain things that you mentioned such as the upselling that they do. Whenever my parents tell me they are looking to buy some sort of a major electronic and that they are stopping by BB, I make sure I hear what they plan to do first before they do a purchase. The crap those people spew to try and sell certain things always amaze me and their service departments always do a crap job not to mention over-charge for everything.
In fact whenever I wander around the computer area just to check some things out, if one of them approaches I'm quick to dismiss them and tell them I'm fine and need no assistance. I'm polite about it but I just don't want to hear any of the lies they have prepared to try and get me to buy something that is worthless.
I tell you what, I would have flipped out if I had to go through the situation you went through. Nothing pisses me off more than when someone tries to rip me off.

Last time I went I asked the salesperson about the ENVYs and he had no idea what they were. You would think they would know something about the flagship model of the largest brand that they carry. The funniest is when they try to sell you on anything Monster Cable related, $100 HDMI cables, now that's funny.

I don't think your a moron for purchasing from best buy, just make sure anything you buy, from ANYWHERE is listed as described by the employee. As I stated in an earlier post I was so close to walking out with the best buy version G73 and didn't due to complications to find out it wasn't 1080p. Thus making the 400 dollar price drop including 2 gigs of ram, a 500gb drive and no backpack or mouse not worth it for me. But I'm here to buy a top of the line system to hold me the next 3-4 years. You made a great decision buying the chopped bb version for your daughter and gf if you ask me. Big props to you for supplying 2 excellent systems to your family.

Actually the price point between BB and the shop I took the car to in the end was comparable, overall it was a little more expensive but the quality of install was far better.
Try Googleing BB and read some others stories, I read one a while back where a guy was taking in computers to be fixed and even for the simplest repairs like replacing a hard drive, adding memory, installing anti-virus etc everything would take 2-5 weeks!!! Geek Squad is quiet possibly one of the largest electronic scams ever. In a nearby town there is another BB and a local computer shop about a block away along the main street that had a sign out front, pretty large that read "We fix Geek Squads mistakes, and we do it in a fraction of the time they took to screw it up" I laughed every time I passed the shop.

May I ask a question about g73....?
Will the mobile hd5870 be replace with a more powerful card in next upcoming months. I think currently this is "high-end" but they haven't release the "enthusiast" level of the series yet.
The more I look at the g73, the more appealing it becomes.

Dude, that's a terrible horror story. Too bad you weren't able to record all those conversations, bend them over backwards, and spank them with the recordings! I would've taken them to small-claims court and save the hassle. Either corporate calls you back and offers you a refund (so they don't have to pay their lawyers to show up to court) or you go to court, the other side doesn't show up and the judge might grant you summary judgement provided all the evidence you provided is sufficient. When the $#!+ starts rolling downhill, record and take note of everything. Sorry to hear the crap you had to endure.

Unless Asus provides an upgrade path, the answer is nope.

how does the asus 1 yr plan damage to the system work. (like for dropping it, surges, etc)
it says 1 yr from date of purchase (60 days to register)
ok so if i purchase it lets say today and it takes more than 60 days to get it how can i register it?
also lets say my g73 takes longer to get and i get it in 3 months does the warranty start from the day i get it or the day purchased so really ur warranty is not for a yr then?

There is a warranty card in with the G73. You have to send that in with the receipt within 60 days of getting the machine. You then have one year of accidental damage protection.
