Taking the advice of the sticky topic, I cut and pasted the 'General Questions':

1) What is your budget?

No more than $750, preferably around $500

2) What size notebook would you prefer?

Betweeen 10-12 inches

3) What country are you buying this in?
USA

4) Are there any brands that you prefer or any you really don't like?
Have owned mostly HPs and Dells, Just recently ordered Asus G73hJ -A1. Usually I'm not too concerned of brand aesthetics, but considering I'm looking for a small laptop on the go. I want something that is just as attractive as the specs.

5) What tasks will you be performing with the notebook?
Lot's messageboards, emails, ebay , watching Hulu, youtube, netflix. I would like to play some low-end games, but it's not a huge priority.

6) Will you be taking the notebook with you to different places or leaving it on your desk?
Definitely looking for travel-friendly netbook.

7) Will you be playing games on it; if so, which games?
Would love to find a netbook that could handle Guild Wars, Kohan: Ahriman's Gift, and it be dream to play Civ4 on a netbook.

8) How many hours of battery life do you need?
Battery life is more important to me than gaming, I need at least 6 hours of battery life. Anything more would be a bonus. Although I could be persuaded to buy a netbook if it has more than 12 hours of BL.

9) Do you mind buying online without seeing the notebook in person?
Generally not a problem for me, so long as I've seen, enough pictures of it.

10) What OS do you prefer?
Windows 7. I know most netbooks have XP or starter version of Windows 7. I would prefer to have the full version if I can.

11) From the choices below, what screen resolutions would you prefer?
Highest I can get. I watch lot of hulu and netflix.

12) Do you want a glossy/reflective screen or a matte/non glossy screen?
Prefer matte/non-glossy

13) Are the notebook's looks and stylishness important to you?
As I've stated earlier looks are important to me, but I value lightweight over cosmetic style.
14) When are you buying this laptop and how long do you want this laptop to last?
looking to buy ASAP. Not sure I understand the rest of this question, who doesn't want their laptop to last? I'm looking for one that's going to survive heavy usage (typing, watching hulu & netflix)

15) How much hard drive space do you want?
Between 80GB-160GB.

16) Do you need an optical drive?
No.

17) What speed CPU/Processor would you like? Dual core or Quad Core CPU?
I generally prefer Intel over AMD unless I were persuaded the latter had better performance and lower heat. I'm not sure how many cores I need, I just want a low-power consuming CPU that's just enough power to handle Hulu and Netflix.

Xotic doesn't have anything under 13.3" and the least expensive model in that size is the UL30 which starts at $775.

I am assuming you bought your G73 from here, I'd go with this asus (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220684). I have to assume there are other colors available for this item, but the only other one that site lists is pink sooooo yea. Just use that as the base for your search.

under your 500 dollar limit

If you can deal with windows 7 starter: this one seems good (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220682)

I like the idea of getting 14 hours of battery life from the 1005PE. I could see myself compromising the dedicated graphics (gaming) for longer battery life. Couple of things I don't like; DDR2 RAM (the UL30 offers DDR3), no HDMI port, resolution (1024 x 600), fingerprint-prone and glare screen, and poor webcam ( 0.3 Megapixel).

The coffee brown 1008P looks nice, especially the port closures. but this is missing the same specs the 1005PE, except they improved the webcam to 1.3 megapixel. Which ironically the very last thing on my list of complaints about the 1005PE.

I am having one heck of a time believing that there is a 10.1" netbook that offers DDR3. I am also not really finding any that have HDMI output. Netbooks weren't really ever intended to play games and do HD output. The only one that comes even close to what you want is well over your budget.

this little alienware (http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&oc=DKCWMN1&s=dhs)

Maverick,

I'm familiar with Alienware's M11x. it's appealing specs but it's too ugly and looks like child's toy.

The Lenovo is actually 11.6". This definitely an alternative if I don't find anything else.

I have an HP Mini 311. I get about 5 hours on it, but they say you can go 6. It comes with a 160GB HDD and 1GB of memory, but you can add a 2GB memory module for about $30. It comes with an nVidia ION LE chipset which limits you to DX9. However, I ran a simple hack and now it's permanently a full blown ION that can do DX10, not that it matters since I don't use it to play games and the netbook is too underpowered to play DX10 games.... There are also some firmware hacks for the Mini 311 that let you overclock, but I don't/won't do that. People also have Mac OS/X running on it if you want to experiment with that, too. I've not tried Mac OS/X on mine.

Overall, it's a great little toy that I use mostly for browsing the web and watch HD movies on it.

What turns me on? Good battery life, can play GPU-accelerated content such as Flash and HD movies (720p and 1080p) and much better than the Intel GMA crap. Good price.

What turns me off? They keyboard is 92% of full-size. The fan, by default, is always on. I guess those older, failing nVidia G84/G86 chips really scared HP. You can turn off the "fan always on" feature in the BIOS settings. Sometimes when I'm typing, my palm accidentally hits the touchpad causing accidental clicks and drags.

What I wish it had? 1Gbps instead of 100Mbps Ethernet port. Synaptics touchpad instead of Alps so I can do 2 finger scroll in Windows. Softer mouse buttons with the buttons having a small bezel around the edge (instead of right on the edge) so it's not too easy to press when I have it lying on my stomach in bed. ;) Bigger screen, but that's the highest rez screen on a netbook. Lighter, of course. A Magsafe connector... ok.. now I'm starting to go into the absurd. :D

I think HP now has a Mini with an Atom N450 in it that may give it even more battery life.

The HP 311 is 13", I'm sold on wanting a 10" netbook. I almost bought it but I'm not liking the 5 hour battery life. I'm currently using my sister's Dell Inspiron 300m which gives me about 4 hours or less battery. The hinge is broken and I have to hold the screen with my hand to watch any video. It struggles with HD video, especially when it's not plugged in.

My biggest thing right now is battery life and weight, but I watch a lot of HULU and NETFLIX. I have hopes of using my netbook to host video on my 42" HDTV via HDMI. So higher resolutions would be nice.

As far as gaming on a netbook, I would love to play Guild Wars, Kohan:AG, and Starcraft. But I'm more worried about watching HULU and NETFLIX than gaming.

IMPO you are asking an awful lot out of something that, quite frankly, isn't meant to do what you are trying to do with it.

I am not sure why you have to have a 10.1" netbook yet. The things that you want to do, outside of Hulu and Netflix are pretty demanding of a netbook, but not impossibly so.

I still have yet to find a 10.1" netbook that has the specs you want in the price range you want. The lenovo is the closest I have found, but it is 11'6".

This toshiba (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834114801) is also not bad, but once again it is 11.6" and DDR2 (at least it is DDR2 800).

I get the feeling you don't want to compromise on anything and get absolutely everything you want with no trade off. I just don't for see you getting it at that price in that screen size.

Actually, the Mini 311 uses a 11.6" screen (http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/computer_can_series.do?storeName=computer_store&category=notebooks&a1=Category&v1=Mini&series_name=mini311_series&jumpid=in_R329_prodexp/hhoslp/psg/notebooks/Mini/mini311_series), not a 13" screen. HP doesn't make any Mini netbooks with 13" screens. It does have an HDMI port that you can plug into a TV and watch 1080p video, but I notice that while it plays, there are times when it gets choppy when using the HDMI port, even on small screens. I've not updated to the latest video drivers in a couple of months, but I also rarely ever plug it into a TV to watch movies. The Mini 311 uses DDR3 memory, but it doesn't really matter since the Atom is now a powerhouse.

I agree with Maverick, you're asking a bit much for what's available today, but if you wait a few more years, perhaps you'll find what you're looking for.

Games like Starcraft and Kohan are RTS games that aren't as demanding as FPS games. They rely on heavy use of RAM more than graphical power. Guild Wars however needs a decent GPU to run.

Guild Wars specs:

Intel Pentium 4 2.0 GHz or equivalent
1 GB RAM
ATI Radeon 9600 or NVIDIA GeForce FX 5700 series video card or above

Kohan: Ahriman's Gift specs:

Pentium IV 1.5 GHz or AMD Athlon equivalent
256 MB RAM
64 MB NVIDIA GeForce 3 / ATI Radeon 8500 or equivalent Video Card with 100% DirectX 9.0b compatible driver

Starcraft specs:

Pentium 90 or higher
16 MB RAM
DirectX-Compatible SVGA Video Card

It wasn't too long ago ASUS had the N10JH playing some low-spec'd games. That was one earliest 10.2" gaming netbooks I've seen. I'm not in a rush to get a netbook, but I definitely want one as I have no plans to lug around the G73JH-A1

I would love to see the N10JH get refreshed specs for this year.

Unless I am crazy the ASUS you are refering to is this one (http://sagatscomputers.net/product_info.php?products_id=2327).

This meets barely any of your current wants in a 10.1" netbook. No DDR3, Only 1024x600 (btw this is the most common res on this size screen and you can very rarely find 1280xwhatever).

Asus may or may not update this netbook, but it certainly won't be soon since the specs on this one really aren't all that far behind current stuff. Really it is not behind at all.

Can you elaborate on why an 11.6" screen is a deal killer?

Mini 311's 11.6" screen has a 1366x768 resolution. ;)

There are some people who have played COD4:MW on it with graphics settings set to low, but I just can't see playing any games on a netbook with such a small screen and low processing power. Unless you want to say that you did it.

GPU-accelerated gaming is a very good way to use up quite a bit of battery juice. Watching Hulu or Netflix via GPU-accelerated Flash or Silverlight is also a good way to use up some battery juice. You currently won't be getting 5 or 6 hours of battery life doing such things with today's netbooks.

Yeah that's the one, I'm holding out that ASUS will refresh that model or release a similar model with the specs I'm looking for.

As for why I want a 10" netbook, well I'm currently using my sister's 3+ years old DELL INSPIRION 300m which I believe is little over 12" and it's kinda heavy. I'm a small guy with small hands. I'm looking for something light weight, but I don't want a one those tiny EEE netbooks ASUS originally put out when they started this class of laptops. I've seen them and they look like a child's toy. Plus they are woefully underpowered.

But I watch a lot of HULU and NETFLIX so I'm concerned that a netbook with Intel GPU isn't going to have enough power for HD video.

ok wait so let me get this straight, the weight is a concern. The ASUS N10JH-A1 that you are all hot and bothered about weighs 3.1 lbs. The Tosibha 11.6" screened one weighs in at 3.48 lbs. WHOA what a whale that toshiba is.

Come on man. The toshiba and the asus are very similar in size even with the slightly larger casing/screen.

I don't know what else to tell you. There are options, none of them are going to have exactly what you want. You might be able to get a bare bones 10.1" that you can build to your exact specs, but I doubt it.

Hulu and Netflix is still going to use up a lot of battery power that you won't get 5 or 6 hours of viewing time.

The Asus N10JH-1 (3.1 lbs), the HP Mini 311 (3.26 lbs), and the Toshiba T115D (3.48 lbs) don't use an Intel GPU to watch videos so you should be able to get good GPU acceleration on some videos with either of these. However, they are all heavier than your sister's Dell Inspiron 300m (3.0 lbs) which you thought was a bit heavy, so you might not be happy with any of these.

Good luck on your hunt.

I may give this 11.6" Toshiba a serious look though.

Weight isn't the only factor. I've mentioned I'm a small guy with small hands. I'm 4'9" tall and I weigh around 85lbs. So if you can put that in perspective, you can maybe get idea of how small my hands are. A 10" is less cumbersome than 13".

I may give this 11.6" Toshiba a serious look though.

Dell 300M Dimensons:

Width 10.8 in
Depth 9.2 in
Height 0.1 in

Toshiba Dimensions:

Width 11.30"
Depth 8.30"
Height 0.98" - 1.35"

So the toshiba is 1/2" wider, shorter in depth by .9", but is thicker by a good chunk. if the thickness is a concern I don't really understand why since even a person of your stature should be able to handle something that is about 1 1/2 inches thick.

I'll measure them myself and report back my findings.

Turns out your measurements are indeed right. The screen (measured diagonally) is 12.1"

I'm little surprised as I surely thought this Dell was bigger than it was. So I guess I'm gonna have to pay closer attention to the overall dimensions of these netbooks as opposed to relying on screen size.

My brother-in-law just bought a 10" Acer Aspire One. I like it, it definitely felt light-weight. I think the key was the depth is only about 7 inches as opposed to typical 9 inches that 13" netbooks have. The 2 inch difference made it so much easier for me to hold.

I'm going to use the Aspire One as standard for the dimensions I'm looking for. As far the Aspire One's specs...Lets just say I'm still hold out.
