When I ordered by ASUS G73JH from XoticPc, I had the primary disk upgraded to a 160 GB Intel SSD. The disk came with 3 partitions. Well, 2 actually. There is a 19GB partition which is likely the recovery partition, the primary OS partition is 116 GB and there is 13 GB unallocated on the disk. Is it safe to extend my OS Partition to use the unallocated space or should I leave the 13 GB unallocated so I have sectors available for the SSD to use for future write locations when/if some sectors wear out?

Extend it there is no benefit of you trying to do what you suggest to save cells.

Level wearing occurs at a lower level than the partitions (it's in hardware). Any time I have a machine with a recovery partition the first thing I do is blow it away and setup the drives the way I want them. If you were given install DVDs for the laptop I don't see any reason to have a recovery partition taking up valuable SSD space.

The G73 does not come with any recovery disks, it only comes with the Drivers and Utilities disk.

You should be glad you got the recovery partition at all, I got a 160g SSD installed by Xotic and it only has the main partition with the OS.

As for the 3rd partition you have you might want to verify it has no information on it then if not you should be able to extend your OS partition to it, When I spoke with Joe he said the recovery partition should be around 14-15g in size, but 19g is close also.

Does their recovery partition come with software to build the DVDs with blank DVDs? Normally OEMs give you that at least.

Its installed on the laptop and asks you when you first boot up to make the backup. Sadly, I assumed the partition was in place and I uninstalled a lot of stuff and installed a lot of stuff prior to realizing that it was not. I didn't make the disks because A: I thought I had some DVD's but only had normal CD's and B: Assumed the partition would be there as Joe said it would be.

Windows reports that the 19GB is an allocated partition, so I assume it is the recovery portion. The other section shows as unused space.

I used the installed software to burn recovery DVD's but I like the idea of having the partition on the disk. That way I don't have to locate the DVD's if I have to recover (I already used the recovery partition twice while I was having issues with games and ATI graphics drivers).

How do I find out if the 'unused' space has anything in it? Do I just use Windows to create a partition there and mount it as a drive to do some exploring?

If the space is not formatted then it has nothing on it.
