I recently got my G73JH and having a minor issue with it and hopefully someone else can tell me it's just a driver issue and what exactly it is heh.
It happens maybe once or twice a day, but out of nowhere it'll get a very loud crackling sound (sounds like maybe from the speakers) and I hit the power to put it to sleep and it quits and I wake it up and works fine most of the day.
Just a minor issue to me, but might get annoying to have that happen when I'm at work with it so thought I'd see if anyone else has had the issue and knows of a quick fix possibly for it. Thanks.

Could be conflicting drivers, a loose connection, sound card not seated properly, one of your other connections (internal or external) grounding out, conflicting applications (When I used to run Teamspeak and BF2 or WoW occasionally my sound would go wonky until I reboot my old desktop)
There is a great many number of potential issues, I would start with uninstalling the sound drivers and reinstalling the newest from ASUS website. And then I would check all external connections to make sure the wiring is not damaged or feels broken inside the sheath. And then just try and take note of what applications were running if it does it again and maybe you can narrow it down to a certain application(s) conflicting.

Well I've gone ahead and reinstalled my audio and video drivers for the fun of it. The downside is it doesn't happen often at all so will take a day or 2 to see if that helped. Also doesn't seem to be associated with any specific programs, but seems to only happen if there's something with sound going. With how rare it happens it's hard to find a pattern though.
Other than that everything else seems fine on this laptop and I'm loving it. Only other "flaw" is the keyboard is slightly raised in the lower left corner where it appears to have come loose, but that isn't much of a problem and I didn't even notice for a while.

I don't have my G73 yet, but I understand it supports EAX, a Creative Labs technology. And Creative Labs cards have been notorious with these random, hiss-crackle-pop noises that drove me bananas. Some say, it's the drivers, some say its BIOS. I say it's Creative Labs, but that's only based on opinion. You can google this and find tons of people having the same problem. But perhaps go here for an in-depth analysis of snap, crackle, and pop (http://forums.creative.com/t5/Sound-Blaster/Follow-up-X-Fi-Crackling-Popping-Noises-thread/m-p/251993) problem from Creative Labs.

Ok well happened 2 more times tonight back to back. Both seemed to be as I received messages on MSN, but didn't have any thing else open other than Firefox and Steam. Also digging through the Asus forums I found. http://vip.asus.com/forum/view.aspx?id=20100410205246203&board_id=3&model=G73JH&page=1&SLanguage=en-us

Steam is the problem. I've seen a bunch of audio issues in G73 forums and everyone has Steam installed and running.

Ok well after taking advice from another forum and co-worker I uninstalled the realtek drivers and let windows just install the generic ones and so far over the past 2 days haven't had any sort of issues with the static any more at least.

Laptop speakers aren't great to start with, but you'll probably have to tweak your EQ settings a bit to get them to soun halfway decent. This is true with any set of speakers.

No, after installing generic ones quality of sound downgrades dramatically and imo it's nothing to do with EQ settings or speakrs quality, am i missing something?

The speakers don't physically change when you install different drivers. Therefor you still have the same potential "goodness" for lack of a better term.
