Hey guys,
this isn't a tech support question about XoticPC laptops, but rather a general help question from me.

I recently reformatted a family member's laptop and installed a copy of Windows 7 they had purchased. Everything went fine, it activated and updated fine, but when I went to install Microsoft Security Essentials, the installer crashes during the "Validating your copy of windows" screen. Pops up one of those, "This program has stopped responding"-type windows.

I'm using the 64bit version (as it is a 64bit install of windows 7), and I am running it with administrative rights. UAC is disabled as well.

Anyone have any ideas/suggestions as to why it wont install?

Assuming everything is legit and installed properly then my first option would be to re-download the file, it might be corrupted.

Redownloaded several times, always the same issue. The copy of Windows is genuine, I installed it for him using a retail Windows 7 DVD he provided (purchased from Best Buy I believe).

Everything else (activation, validation, updates) went perfectly fine. But MSE always crashes on "validation".

Sounds like a job for M$ CS. I had it installed on mine and it ran ok. I am currently reinstalling windows and all my games, when I get threw I will try it again and see if I experience the same problem.

Not sure how true it is now, but I know in Vista the only retail copy you could buy that had 64 bit was Ultimate, otherwise you was only getting the 32 bit and you had to contact MS to get the CD for 64 bit version, and you could only get that CD if the CD key has never been activated in 32bit.

Not saying this is the case, but it could be.

Make sure in his C: drive has 2 "Program Files" folders, one normal (64 bit) and the other will say (x86) and the end for 32 bit applications. If it has only one, its the 32 bit OS.

I'm pretty sure you can buy all versions of windows 7 64-bit, and in fact I'm guessing that they're encouraging 64-bit versions rather than 32 since "its the way of the future" and all...

Yep it has two program files folders, the normal and x86 one.

I have no clue about the top bit, I just used the disc he provided. On my personal rig I used the upgrade disc to upgrade from Vista to Windows 7.

I'm pretty sure most every Windows 7 version has a 64bit version bundled with it too, you get to choose during install. I could be wrong though.

If no one else has any suggestions I'll probably just contact Microsoft, or download Avira or something.

I believe the only one with 32bit support only is Home Basic, but that's not being marketed to the American market as I understand it. I suggest calling/emailing CS @ m$ and see if they can't fix the problem for ya.
