There is really no competition to the Asus in that price range. Even customizing it up closer to 1800 the next closest thing is the 8760 and you won't get nearly as much machine for the price at 1800. If you want to stay closer to 1500 then the choice is clearly the G73JH. There really isn't a competition until you hit about 1900-2000 dollars and then the Sager 8760 becomes an option, but only if you want certain things out of the laptop.

Well in a 15" there is the 8690, but you don't get the capability to have 2 HDD's. Personally if you want a 15" laptop I don't think there is much competition for the 8690, it is a screaming machine. If you are willing to spend 1800 on a 15" laptop you can get a great 8690.

The 8690 configured like: 1920x1080 Screen, i7-720, 4GB DDR3 1333, 4X bluray, 500GB HDD 7200 RPM, Intel 6300N Wifi, Win7 Home Premium is 1744 (1691 cash price).

I have yet to find a better machine in 15" for my purposes.

Sorry forgot to address #2. Ultimate has a couple features that premium doesn't, but the only one that I have noticed that a person might miss is the ability to use a network back-up. Ultimate lets you do this without third party software and premium doesn't. Not a huge deal IMPO. Home premium has everything the average user should need from an OS.

Home Premium is the standard shipping OS with almost all new computers. The real world advantages of Pro and Ultimate are minimal, however if you have anything more than a basic home network it might be worthwhile to invest in the Pro version as it offers better networking options. Sometimes colleges and some business's have a more complex network and Home Premium might not offer the needed options to connect properly, now this is a small chance but still something worth noting before making the choice.

1) 1066 should be just fine for your purposes. Not that you will likely notice. No don't spend $220 on it.
2) If you are looking at the G73, 4-6 weeks to even get your machine in stock, another 3-5 days of testing IF you have customizations, and 3-5 days to deliver (assuming you live in the US). (these are all estimates and I am in no way saying that Xotic will for sure be able to meet that time frame as I do not work for them).

I would take both those, they are both worth it.

Hi everyone,

Just wondering if anyone can see any problems with this spec I chose. I'm mostly going to be using this comp for hardcore gaming and running design programs like Maya & 3DS Max. Also, I need the smaller size 'cause I travel a bit.

only thing I might suggest is getting one of the intel wireless cards and maybe get the ATI 5870, would some futureproof your setup. and the intel cards support more bandwidth and have a few extras like mi-fi hotspot.

I am sure you will get plenty of opinions, but for what you plan to do, it should be quite capable.

Not sure what your budget is but maybe throw in some more RAM as well if you can afford it.

In no case can I recommend spending more money on an inferior GTX285M over the ATi Radeon 5870, unless your plan is to try and softmod the card into a quadro imitation. It is just all around a bad idea. Save the 56 dollars on the video card and go with the ATi and then shift that to the Intel Wifi card.

Yeah, just finished with some research. The Ati seems the way to go. Plus, I've had nothing but problems with Nvidia drivers over the years. Also, should I add more RAM? Or would what I picked be good enough?

from a gaming perspective 4GB is enough. If you can afford to do 8GB then you should from a professional stand point and future proofing as much as possible for gaming.

Awesome feedback, thank you. Just one last thing. Do I really need the (1920x1080) FHD on a 15.6" screen? Would the (1600x900) be sufficient?

I don't know? Do you? I personally love the full HD on this screen. WoW on ultra looks hawt. Bluray upgrade in my future means that I can use that full HD on my laptop as well as external displays via HDMI. So IMPO yes the full HD is very worth it. From a professional CAD stand point the extra screen real estate could really pay off.
