OK nothing is wrong with my systems I just know zero about networks. I have never set one up and never made use of so I am an idiot on that.

Here is where I am. I have a sprint 4G I want to use as a router between my two notebooks. At this time it is for transferring from old to new.

I have Vista on old and W7 on new. In the Network map on both I can see both. On the new W7 I can even I think get sharing from the olds media player. But I want the computers to have full access. I guess see each other and all files so I can transfer. That is what I am at a loss for.

Any help? I am sure this is simple but I just do not know. Save me research if you can.:)

on the old vista machine go in to my computer, right click the drive you want to share. Click properties and go to the sharing tab. click share and finish out that box that pops up. then you should be able to see the whole drive on the old machine from your W7 machine.

You may get a pop up that asks for a user name and password on the W7 laptop when you try and access the drive on the vista machine and all you need to do is enter your username and password that you used on the vista laptop in there and check the block that says something about remember me or whatever.

I'm not sure about on win vista/7 but i know in XP you can go into My Computer and right click on the C: drive (or whatever your drive is called) and there is a "Sharing and Security" option. If you click on that it will pop up the drive's Properties window to a Sharing tab and that will give you the option to share the entire drive. (Note you can right click on the drive>properties>sharing and get the same tab). Hope this helps.

Edit: AH i was beaten to it :(

OK guys you did get me further and thanks. I am sure something obvious I am not doing. I will keep thinking what I might be missing as not working yet. But you guys did help me get at least one step ahead. Thanks.

Are they in the same workgroup? you can check this by right clicking on my computer>properties>computer name. If they're in different work groups they may not show up.

bet the vista one is in MShome and the other is in workgroup.

in order to see the drive you have to make sure both computers are in say the "mshome" workgroup.

well so long as they both say the same thing it shouldnt matter if its MShome or IHateMS or anything else

yea, but for ease changing one to match the other is usually best

Not yet. I am not sure what I am missing. It did show my 4G as a Belkin router and asked for an 8 digit number password. I do not have that but it no longer shows it. I will play with later.

sounds like it may not be connecting to the network because the network is password protected maybe? you would have had to set it up that way though, so you should know the password in that case...
