Folks...does anyone else have an 9262 w/ a DVD drive that has it occassionally just pop open? It's happened a few times to me...not a killer by any means, but certainly odd!

I frequently carry my 9262 on edge and I'm pretty sure I hit the eject button myself. This is as close to a random opening that I've experienced.

this is happening more and more...and sometimes the DVD drive will begin the autoboot of a disc that has been sitting in there doing nothing for no good reason...and it's still popping out on occassion...could this be a driver issue? a firmware issue? it's a tad troubling!

sounds like the latch holding the drive in may be loose...if you wiggle the front panel, does that cause it to open? or will it only pop open if you touch the release?

If the problem is not resolved by other suggestions, I would just get the DVD Rom replaced. I believe it would be covered in the warranty, but I am not sure if Xotic would send you a new drive or if you would need to send the entire laptop to them.

robamb, ocg..thanks guys....

yep, wiggling it will cause it to open...is there a way to tighten the latch? I would hate to lose my drive....you basically can't do anything gaming wise w/ out it!!! :D

I would call tech support and talk to them about possible fixes, or if they can replace just the drive. If you crack open the dvd rom you may void the warrenty. I would at least double check with either of the Justins :)

the popping open could also be caused by the emergency eject hole in the front of the dvd drive. if u hv used it before u could hv possibly pushed it in too far causeing the latching mech to get out of alignment. i have to use mine from time to time when i put in command and conquer 3. for some reason when i put in the disk, occasionally its like the game locks up the systm. the dvd drive spins REAL FAST AND NOISY and never registers anything on the screen so the only way i can stop the application is to use that little pin hole or use THE FINGER OF GOD as i call it...aka a hard shutdown. not saying thats your prob but maybe. lol laterz.........

Sager sent me a new drive, I plopped it in, called Xotic support on Saturday night because after I put it in, my PC didn't recognize it, Thane quickly emailed me a link to a quick fix that helped the Bios find the drive again and so far, the problem has NOT repeated itself!

Thanks Sager for the RMA return and thanks Thane and Xotic for the sat. night support!

later,
pat!!!

That's great to hear! It makes me look forward to calling tech support if a problem ever arises.

Couldn't be happier w/ this machine...it is eating games alive! And getting someone on a Saturday night who's actually engaged and interested in solving your problem is just a rare thing in the PC world!

I had an issue with mine popping open shortly after putting a disc in. It would start to spin up and then eject the disc. I would push it back in, but harder, and then it would stay. There was also a terrible vibration when the drive ran full speed. It was doing that from day one.

It has finally failed, and I recently contacted support to find out what comes next. I can't afford to send the whole lappy back, so if thats the only option, I will probably just by a new optical drive - and then deal with the faceplate fit issues.

Sager is sending me a new drive as well. I hope that my computer recognizes it once I pop it in. At least its easy to take out and push back in. As of now I'm not necessarily needing to use the dvd rom drive. The strange thing is that it worked the first couple days because I loaded like 6.5GB of Adobe Software onto my NP5796. Then it started having that popping out issue and not auto loading my CD's or DVD's.

Ahhhh... this is just frustrating. You'd think they would resolve this problem if alot of people are having a problem. Maybe they are buying defective DVD ROMS from the manufacturer. But you'd really expect everything to work after paying upwards of $3500 for a single laptop!

 *mood... Annoyed

It's actually funny that you mention the drive popping open. In the middle of watching some youtube videos, my drive popped open as well. I knew I didn't hit something, so I thought I got a virus from youtube or something, so I ran a virus scan and came up with nothing... so weird. Nice to know its happened to someone else.

I have the Sager NP5796

I'm currently having the same problem as bargegod. Every now and then when I load a cd into my drive (games only so far, haven't tried with movies or music) it spins up really fast and it's loud. Have to use the pinhole to open it up and it pretty much locks up my system. Pretty irritating to be honest. Happens randomly with a multitude of my cd games. Is it just that the drive is faulty or is there some way to make it behave that I should know about??

Well I went and jinxed myself by saying that "every now and then" my cd drive spins up super fast and scrams out my system...now any disc I put in causes it to freak out. Sometimes the only way to get my system to respond is to hold the good ol' power button and kill it. Of course I hate doing that. And afterwards I have to give the system about an hour while the RAID drive does a diagnostic to make sure nothing is wrong. Frustrating!!!
