Current Laptop: NP8662: C2D 2.66GHz, 4GB 1066MHz, GTX 260M, 320GB 7200RPM, 1920 x 1200.

Worth an upgrade to NP8690 for the i7 and HD5870 or GTX 285M?
(Assuming I can sell the NP8662 for a decent price)

you don't want the 285M first.

I would say that gaming wise you will probably see a performance jump if only because of the 5870. So if you can get say 800-1000 for the 8662 then it is probably worth it.

Do you think I'd be able to get much money from my current laptop in a year?
Part of me wants to sell it now so I don't get stuck with it for waiting too long.

Part of me wants to sell it now so I don't get stuck with it for waiting too long. You lose value fast $700 would be a good price to get at this time. $500 in a year is a god value for you. The $200 you lose you gain with the value (lower price/faster components) of the new purchase. You are on a every generation upgrade path right now. The replacement will lose it's appeal just as fast as the current. Get some use out of current even if you don't sell it ever you will get the use and get a major upgrade at a good price.

You sell now you will be doing the same thing next year when new stuff comes out. That will cost more than any value you might lose waiting.

But then again buy when you need get what you can afford too much waiting is a losing battle. The only worse one is trying to stay current.

I would say it's definitely not worth it... the diff between the 260m and the 5870/285 is marginal imo, and the only real benefit is the cpu.

If you keep the 8662 like PP said you can still sell it later and get a much larger performance/price contrast in your favor. Around a year+ is when considering a switch sounds about right to me too... but my cheapness says wait until she dies!!!

The jump to a 5870 or 285 is incremental not leaps and bounds. With my G73 I would make setting adjustments on some games. On a 260 you might do a few more. I was just benching Crysis on very high at native resolution. Avg fps DX9 15.5 DX10 17. Your card might really do well vs mine in DX9? Might beat. My cards real power has not even been coded for and more so in Crysis.

I do not think real world you will see a difference with out a stopwatch.

If it was me I 100% would not do. I am cheap like Dry but think we are correct. Dry guesses 1+ year I think a good guess but even if it is 9 months as long as you gain better than incremental.

For gaming and most other things your CPU is likely as good as mine, your GPU is close enough. You get $700 for yours know and spend $800/$1000 to replace. No that is not value. You will break your bank in a year or two with that plan. It is kind of buy high sell low.

And really your notebook still has it so use it.

If anyone thinks it is a good decision to replace I really want to hear the logic.
