I recently received the Asus G51JX-A! laptop from XoticPC and have really enjoyed it thus far. However, I noticed a program called "Power4Gear Hybrid" on the computer that allows the user to enable a "turbo mode," essentially overclocking the CPU. Is this considered "safe" overclocking, or can extensive use of this mode cause damage to the CPU?

Yea it i safe but if you have a i7 720 I don't think it helps. I do not use and have tested. With it off my CPU can run 4 cores at x13 with it on x12 so actually faster by a few MHz with it off.

But yea it is safe.

It's faster when it's off? Huh... that's odd for an overclocking program.

Thanks!

I think this is a different turbo than whats on the G73. they may not be the same. or they might be.

That's a possibility. I'm guessing that the program would not allow the user to overclock at a level that is dangerous for the laptop, but I still feel somewhat nervous about the whole concept of overclocking.

OK I looked it up it is the same on G73. It is called Power4Gear Hybrid. That is your p4g control panel and in the bottom left you have the "turbo" feature.

The reason it is not faster is the way it plays with Turbo Boost. The Intel Turbo boost adjusts it's boost based on determined thermal thresholds. With TB off I have 133MHz bus noP4G turbo the thermal allows a x13 multiplier so 133x13=1729Mhz with all 4/8 cores working. Turn on the P4G turbo I get 142x12=1704Mhz.

OK sure when I am not doing anything and both use a x7 the 133x7=931, 142x7=994. But what does it matter when not doing anything?

Maybe I will try and find the values in the registry and change. It does increase your RAM speed but my RAM is already fast enough at 1333Mhz I do not need 1442MHz RAM.
