Hey everyone,

I am trying to find the best price as always, but also a quality machine. I have had problems in the past with laptops and am a little nervous to buy from a non-mainstream source especially when it comes to brands I am not familiar with. However I am very interested to hear what anyone has to say.

My needs are similar to the Deployment thread I just read. I Don't like a computer with heating problems at all. Looking for a 15-16 inch screen. If a game comes out in a year or two that might be a little higher end I want to be able to play it. I am also Looking for around a $1500 laptop. Any battery life is a plus, but not a huge concern.

I was about to jump in and buy this Dell XPS 16 when I came across this place. I was wondering how you guys feel the specs/price I found compared to something I might find here. My main problem with the Dell and probably the only real reason I am looking here is because their video card options are middle of the road at best. If I am wrong and you guys think the ATI Radeon HD 5730 -1GB can handle most games on at least medium settings then please do let me know because that is the only real problem I have with this setup.[/URL]

Here is the Dell Studio XPS 16 I was looking at listed for $1370 which I found reasonable. I love their 2 year advanced warranty plan:

I posted what is comperable to the specs you listed. To sum it up the graphics card is a step up and so is the screen resolution. The price for this model as is is 1299.00 and does give the option to upgrade parts if you'd like too

Hey Hutsady! Ive heard that that model ha had thermal issues, do you know something we don't? The benchmarks you guys ran on the 51J idled pretty high for some reason. Regardless, a laptop like a 8690 or G73 will give you better heating with a better graphics card. Just so tge OP knows the 360M is actually not as good as the 260M for some reason. Damn Nvidia naming.

I agree, a Sager 8690 seems to fit the bill. The specs of the Asus are excellent for the price, but I'm not certain of its cooling capabilities.

If you order from Xotic then you are in good hands. They may not be some mega corporation like Dell but Xotic is a well known and very reputable place that does a excellent job with its work.

I have heard the same things about that ASUS concerning heating problems and the video card is not that much better for me to risk it. As far as the G73 I would really prefer a 15-16" laptop so thats out of the picture. The Sager one does look nice. Anyone have a spec setup thats comparable for $1500 max? Also if anyone thinks there is another laptop i should look at, feel free to post :)

Thanks for your input so far.

I've come up with 3 options... which introduce questions I have. Sorry it turns out i have a lot.

First of all is it worth the extra $200 or so for the HD5870 over the HD5850? I think thats where the biggest price difference comes from.

Second of all should I be considering a 620m over a 720/740QM or are the quad cores superior?

Also does the diamond thermal compound make a big difference?

Are the 1920x1080 screens going to make a noticeable difference in quality?

I see that option number 2 says pre-order. I am looking for something that delivers and ships quickly as my previous computer is no longer in service and am hoping delivery will take 2-3 weeks. Which of these will come the quickest?

Who has the best customer service? MSI or SAGER. As you can see I was sure to add in each of them at least 2 years parts warranty. I dont know if it matters, but I live in the US.

Which makes the better computer? My last laptop (HP.. never again) broke down very early. I have been looking all around the forums and I see that most people have SAGER laptops. Are SAGERs superior?

If you have the time take at look at the options below. I tried to get similar options for all of them. I'll likely end up upgrading the 4 GB RAM in the future, but for now its fine.

Also does the diamond thermal compound make a big difference?

-Chris

No, sticking with stock

Are the 1920x1080 screens going to make a noticeable difference in quality?

-Chris

I'm going with better resolution..

I've answered some of my own questions already, but please help out on the others.

The Sager is the best of the three. It is full HD, has a higher pixel density, which means the screen will look better. The 5850 is a lower clocked 5870, the reason the Sager costs more is because it is a better quality computer. It has far superior cooling to both of those MSIs. Remember the Force and Sager don't come with a operating system. The 620m uses less power and is better for games at the moment, but the 720qm is better for things like rendering or photoshop, because they are optimized for more threads. It is the general consensus that Sager makes a better computer.

Okay so I'm down to between the Sager and the Dell I initially wrote about. For 300 dollars more I get a much better video card and hopefully better product? Would anyone jump on that 1370$ Dell instead?

I would go with the Sager as I am almost vehemently against Dell. I'm probably not the best person to ask

haha, I know how you feel. I feel the exact same way towards HP.

Hopefully I get a few more opinions though :p
