my First and only problem on my computer!!!
Gentlemen, im on my cell phone typing this because my pc is running chkdsk now and screen is blank, so bear with me

im running 2 drives in raid 0 config. On win7 64 bit

This more than likely means one of your HDD's has an error or is in the process of failing. After the Chkdsk is completed report back and let us know what it says.

well I tried, since it had to run outside of windows, after the boot screen, i only got dotted lines across the top few pixels, tried 3 cold reebost and still only had the same intermittent stripe across the top.

LUCKILY this time it booted (still had error) so im back on the laptop...

this brings up a couple other concerns i have.. RAID 0... is there a way i can switch to raid 1 and keep my system the way it is??

also, how can i backup my system to work on one drive?
thanks!!

back the raid array up like you would any normal hard drive. Windows 7 has a built in back up utility that can use a USB hard drive to back your disk up.

and windows 7 backup will make a mirror or image of the complete drive so i can reformat the 2 drives? i never had to deal with backups b4.. or raid drives let alone both lol:_P

technically windows only sees 1 drive, even though it is 2 drives in tandem. So yes windows backup will perform it's job just the same as if you had a single drive.

Since you are booted why don't you run HDTune to find out the problem?

best guess:

Go buy an external hard drive (if you don't have one already) and load windows onto it via a different PC. Then reboot your PC that is having problems and use the boot menu to choose to boot from the USB hard drive. After that install acebackup (http://www.acebackup.com/) and use it to back up your raid to the external drive.

oh and then go and replace both the drives in your laptop and re-setup your raid and then restore the back up.

I understand what your saying, but it not a "boot" problem as its more a drive hardware cable problem...

im on the pc thats having probs, (in safe mode)
the problem is that i cant get any backup programs to read because of that cable read error.. theres no noise in the HDDs, its kind of expensive to buy
3 250gig hdd.. and i dont have the win7 disks (didnt ship) so ill loose that as well..

i need to find how to take this appart so i can check the cables and make my backups so i can get rid of raid "0"

There are no cables boss. The laptop has a direct interface. I am not saying it is a boot problem. I am saying you have a hard drive that is failing, you can either get the data off of it before it is gone by using a different boot device (external USB hard drive, etc.) and then grabbing all the data you can off the affected drives or you can just bite the bullet, lose the data (for now) and replace the hard drives and try and go back and get the data later.

You can make a windows 7 disk:

http://techpp.com/2009/11/11/download-windows-7-iso-official-direct-download-links/

download the .iso file, use a burn program like nero and create a windows 7 disk.

The bottom line is that you are lucky the drive is running at all, the drive is failing, so you need to take steps to get your data backed up as soon as you possibly can or you are going to lose it no matter what.

Thankyou!!! no cables! that saves me unnecissary work! I totally realize I am on borrowed time with this thing.. (you are watching death in progress!! ) yes, I have "copied" all my files I could think of to a 40 gig usb drive

made a win7 bootable and acronis start disk..

now onto the inevitable!!
i dont want raid 0 anymore... can i set the internal drives to a "c" and "d"?
and have different sizes/ brands? ( no raid)

Can you do it from the BIOS?

sure, turn off raid in the bios and set SATA mode to something other than raid.

See, I knew it was something like that.

yea I should expand that answer a little I suppose:

the settings for SATA are usually something like ACHI, IDE, Raid. So try ACHI first and if that doesn't work (sometimes it doesn't) then use the IDE setting. sometimes there is only Raid / IDE.

also DO NOT do this until you are sure you are ready to use whichever drive is actually good for installing windows, because once you do you basically have two separate drives with nothing but garbled code on them. That means you are ready to format both drives and re-install windows.

ok
i remember seeing that in the bios options... i first have to get the win7 cd burned and all my ducks ready to go... and switch my hdds around..

i still have 1 good one, can i use that as the "c" now and add a "d" slave later?

I believe so. Thats what I'm planning on doing once I get a SSD since I dont care much about boot times.

Mav poster picks IDE will he be running IDE? Is he stuck? What OS does poster have? Is IDE an option?

ok' i disabled raid, in the bios also

removed suspected drive, switched the good one to the no.1 bay.

Now reloading win7 w/ bin provided earlier...

No, what happens is the SATA controller emulates the IDE bus. Sometimes certain things just don't like the ACHI mode of SATA so you have to use the IDE setting. Shouldn't be a problem here though.

Advanced Host Controller Interface (ACHI) vs. Ide:
