eSATA question

Hi,
I have a 8690 and would like to make use of my eSATA port, but I have a few questions first:
What is the speed of this sata port? Is it comparable with Sata I or II? How faster is it from Firewire?
What would you recommend? An external HDD? or an internal one connected via encasing? Somehow they seem to be risky and unreliable,although I've never used one.

Esata is the same speed as SATA II internal (3.0 GB/s) and is about 7x faster than firewire. You would need to get an external hard drive with an Esata interface.
