View Full Version : New Afterburner Lighting for ASUS G Series

We have just launched New "After Burner FX" Lighting available on the ASUS G Series Notebooks. We have them available in Blue, Red and Green. After approximately 8 weeks of testing these are now available for purchase. I have just updated the pictures to include a red one we did earlier along with a new modification to the light bar under the screen. :)
UPDATE 11/12/10 I wanted to update that on the G73 we have set the lights to be controlled by the default button ASUS uses to turn off the keyboard and light bar lights. For the G53 we are setting up a touch sensor to turn the lights on and off. :)

any reason you can't do this to the sager back vent ports?

I think one reason would be is that the newer Asus G Series laptops, like the G73's and G53's, have extra space in their vents to accommodate the lights.

My 8690 has extra space as well, I just don't know if its enough.

The Asus G Series are beautiful looking machines.
Why junk them up?
IMO,if you've got an extra $99,put it into upgrades that will improve your computing experience.

This is just a first for modifications like this. As we see how the reception is to the G series Asus we will start to branch off into different computers. As we explore the Sager options there is a possibility that it could be offered. However as you can see the QA process for something like this certainly isnt short so getting it soon may be out of the picture.
I will say though that in person this modification is even more impressive. the pictures are good, but they do not do the modification full justice.

i'd say beautiful is subjective. If someone would rather spend on lights than upgrade his hardware and be happy with it, I don't see why not.

I'd get them if there is a button/switch to control on/off. I rather leave lights off for downloads at night :)

As with Desktop Case lighting some like the extra lighting and some prefer the more stealth no lighting look. We are trying to provide a option no one else does for those that like to add a little flare to the look of the machine.

Can't, I need it for college. My other laptop pretty much died on me after I got this one. I saw it coming and got this one just in time. It's okay though. I don't need it, just want it.

We will test the battery life difference between our lighted models and a non lighted models. The power draw is really small so I am curious if it makes much difference at all. Once i test the two I will post an update.

Very cool. Is there a kit we can buy to add in ourselves?
Justin@XoticPC
11-03-2010, 10:46 PM
Thanks for all your feedback! This is all special Low Voltage LED Lighting that is being used. We have tested through several different lights before ultimately deciding on the LED's we chose. We are working on a switch to control them. We are testing it in a G53 now and should have that finalized this week. :)

I would love to see a kit that could be fitted to any laptop should the user so desire. I bet there would be plenty demand for it. I would definitely buy it and try to fit it to my 8690. I am considering trying to use a low power LED and some fiber optic strands to do a light around the edge of the LCD and keyboard.
Maverick494
11-04-2010, 01:56 AM
I know where I would put the switch for lights on a sager 8690.... Exactly the same spot the power button is, except on the oppisite side of the LCD.
I am thinking that I could then run the fiber in the groove around the keyboard between the silver stripe and around the LCD in the groove between the front and back pieces. It would just be a matter of taking the power for the LED that is already there and applying it to the new LED on that side or better yet just seeing if you can some how tie in the fiber optic to the existing LED on that side.

What I'm wandering is....why not put the lights in that can change color? IE like the Alienware models (desktop). Can't that hard to do, as long as there is a program to change them in the machine.

I think beside toggle on and off, adding different brightness or breathing effect which will changes according to the load of the system, such as low brightness when the system is working under minimum work load and maximum brightness when the system is under maximum work load which mean when the work load gets heavier the lighting gets brighter gradually. It will be even better if the keyboard and vent lightings can be customizable.
I think people don't mind fishing out more from their pocket for customizable lightings and the special vent lighting effect.
That will surely make the whole system look more awesome.

11-05-2010, 12:05 PM
It shouldn't increase the temp by more than half a degree or so since LED's are pretty good at keeping heat emissions very low.

I like the Lights
But will this light modification harm the computer performance in teh long run in anyway ?
How do we shut off the lights ?
I mean is there just 1 button to turn off all the Lights & keyboard lights too
or can we induviualy it shut off, which would be better :)
Is there any Video I could see ?
Thanks

From what Justin said, a switch is forthcoming. Right now the lights are always on. As for system impacts in the long run, I would think they would be minimal at worst but likely have no notable impact. They're just 1/2 watt LED lights, right?

I dont know if $99 is really good price for these though. I'd by it if it was like around 40 or 50.
tabuburn
11-08-2010, 05:57 PM
I can see why it'll cost $99. They would need to almost completely dismantle the entire computer just to get access to the back vents since those won't come off until they do. They also would need to make sure they wire it correctly to the computers power source with soldering and such making sure it doesn't short or ground the computer itself. Oh, and not to mention labor in doing all this.

An on/off switch would be neat - however - I don't really see it as necessary. LEDs hardly draw much power so I don't think there's a big battery drain concern with them being on all the time. I guess if you were a secret agent and needed a laptop that could be both flashy and stealthy you would have to insist on the switch.
I am curious as to what sort of switch they're working on. If it was a sweet retro toggle that stuck out of the laptop I would be more interested.

We are talking about desktop replacement/gaming laptops here guys. Having an on/off switch would be nice but if you are concerned about battery life because of it then did you really want a desktop replacement/gaming laptop to begin with? These things were designed to be always plugged in due to their massive power consumption.

OMG that toggle would be terrible.
I would hope they are working on a micro switch that blends in fairly flawlessly with the unit.

Most likely it'll only drain about as much power as the backlit keyboard but concerns on battery life should not even be an issue since gaming laptops always need an outlet nearby at all times considering just even doing simple word processing won't make it last beyond a hour and 45 min. even on power save.

I think the on/off switch should be shared with the asus default button to turn off the light. Just hook the wires to it, place a small pcb board for even more controls and your done.

The afterburner lighting looks amazing. The problem is, a lot of us have already purchased our machines. I'm sure that if you sold this as an add-on modification for existing G73/JH/JW/SW owners, there would be a lot of interest (I would post on http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus-gaming-notebook-forum/). You could even charge a little more for it, as a kit...
Might I also suggest possibly offering silver vents with the kit as well.... (take a look at the Asus G73 video - perhaps this was originally offered).

If Xotic offers this (maybe at a slightly discounted price?) for current owners of a G53/G73 etc notebook, I think you'll see more people interested.
I wouldn't want to send my laptop back in just to pay customs fees on top of the $99 to have the LEDs installed.
On the up side... those lights look amazinggggg. I totally support that idea posted earlier about having the afterburner LEDs brighten/darken with CPU load or even GPU load. Perhaps change colour? Blue is idle/low load... then it turns red with a heavy load. Above 50% or something?
