Microphone does not work

I have an Asus Z84j running vista ultimate 32 bit and am trying to set it up as a karaoke player, but I can not get any volume from the microphone. The built in microphone has never worked on the computer and after installing new realtek drivers I can get programs to pick up the microphone but the sound will not relay through the speakers. Another problem that may be related is that the function keys for volume do not work. When I use the function keys I get a window in the upper left corner showing that the volume is increased decreased or muted but it does not actually change anything. Any help would be appreciated. You might have already tried this, but it sounds like you might want to check the control panel to be sure Windows is using the same sound card that your mic is plugged into. Or it would also be good to make sure that *every* channel in the volume control is turned up and un-muted. (This is me speaking from a very frustrating experience.)
