Well I am going to start this bad chicken off!!! :eeek2:

I just dropped the hammer on a G73SW-A1 here are the important specs:

ASUS G73SW-A1 Republic of Gamers ASUS Gaming Laptop - PRE ORDER
Dead Pixel Warranty ASUS Zero Bright Dot (ZBD) 30 Day Pixel Guarantee
Processor Intel® Core™ i7-2630QM, 2.0-2.8GHz, (32nm, 6MB L3 cache)
Graphics Video Card nVidia GeForce GTX 460M 1,536MB PCI-Express GDDR5 DX11
Ram 8,192MB (8GB) DDR3 1333MHz Dual Channel Memory (4x2GB) - Standard
ASUS G Series Afterburner™ FX Red Afterburner LED Light Package
Optical Drive 4X Blu-Ray Reader / 8X DVDRW/CDRW Super Multi Combo Drive
Primary Hard Drive - 500GB (w/ 4GB SSD Memory) Seagate XT 7200RPM NCQ Hybrid 32MB Cache (Serial-ATA II 3GB/s)
Second Hard Drive - 500GB (w/ 4GB SSD Memory) Seagate XT 7200RPM NCQ Hybrid 32MB Cache (Serial-ATA II 3GB/s)
Sound Card Sound Blaster Compatible 3D Audio

Had to do the red afterburner.......I know it doesn't help the performance, and the money would probably be better spent upgrading memory, but.....I think it looks BAD ASS!!!!!!

Does anyone else have one of these bad boys ordered?!?!?!?

I also made the plunge into that machine. I placed my order for the G73SW-A1 last week on Tuesday, though I did not upgrade anything on the machine. Gratz on the purchase though :)

If any of you G73SW future owners start getting impatient. Just read 10 pages a day from the G73JH wait list. If you finish the thread and still do not have your G73SW let us know. I can almost guarantee you will have before you finish.;):D

What is funny about this is I have been cruising these forums since I placed my order (pretty sure I have checked every thread) and though I understand what you're saying about the wait time..... Watching coworkers open up their laptops (2 of them ordered from a different reseller) is no fun =/ Upgrades take time and that is understood, mine however is bone stock... Hopefully it comes this week like they keep saying :)

However, these forums are quite informative and I am certainly glad I found them.

G73JH pre-order wait list. 1020 pages 10193 replies. Just saying will keep you busy? Give it a go.

But yea that was major frustration some ordered end of December got in March. You will do better I am sure.

That is one sweet CPU in that machine.

Dirty LJ

Keeper: Did your coworkers order the same machine? I couldn't pass up the afterburner upgrade. I am going to be using it as my main machine for my DJ setup, and well....it looks cool. Though it adds time to production.

The wait wont be as bad once they get them in stock. Waiting for them to get their shipment from Asus is the hardest for me.

powerpack: I, like Keeper, have been lurking in these forums trying to decide to buy the G73JW or wait for the SW. I decided to wait. I have found with computers if the price is right go as big as I can afford and it becomes obsolete in 6 months as opposed to just after it ships ;)

Keeper
01-17-2011, 06:41 PM
Dirty LJ: they did indeed order the same machine, I am actually playing with one right now lol. It is pretty damn amazing, too bad I cannot take it home though =/ I understand the want of the afterburner lights and can see why that would make sense for a DJ. For me however, I am the only one that will see it with the occasional lan party.

Plus I am heading out of the country next week for 2 weeks and am really hoping I will have it to take with me and alleviate my gaming addiction ;)

Suggestion: DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE START A WAIT LIST!!!!!!!! Powerpack started one for the JH, and BOOM!!!!! I simply can NOT believe this is going on AGAIN this year with ASUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I really hope the wait will not be as long as the wait was for me for the JH model. I ordered in Feb and received in April (I think) PAINFUL is not the word I would use to describe MY experience, but I'm just NOW getting over the headache from last year. Good news, you guys are going to love your machines(when you actually get them). My best advice is to order it and FORGET about it, so when it finally arrives you will be surprised. I actually had time to remodel half my house while I waited, so, find you a project that you have been putting off and get busy.

And I went ahead and decided to upgrade the RAM to 10gig and they are going to put the 4gig card in the hard to reach slot so I never have to pull the thing apart to upgrade the memory.

If you can I recommend to upgrade the ram to 10gb. That way you can have them put the 4gb chip in the "hard to reach" spot. That way it will be easier for you to max out your ram later if you want.

They charge your card as soon as the computer goes into production. If you can, order as soon as possible because the waiting sucks!!!! The sooner you order the sooner it will come.

I have the upgraded wireless card on mine, 3 antennae... and it's finding more signals and quality than any of my past laptops.

Even the strength that it transmits is higher than any others I've had.

Certainly notice the difference on my end.

Yes I kept everything stock, I usually just plug it in anyway, so it was not really an issue, plus I do not have a N router at my house so I was not worried about it. When that changes I will just upgrade it myself at that point.

Now you'll need to get the new Cisco/Linksys 450mb/s on 5ghz band or the TrendNet 450mb/s Simultanious Duel-Band Wireless Router announced at CES.

The only way for me 2 get 1 now is import. That means + 20% tax/duty plus shipping.

I'm leaning toward the TrendNet to replace a NetGear 3700 but....

The memory is confusing.

Why 10gb 1 x4gb and 3 x 2gb?

I recommend using only 4gb So-Dimms.

2 x4gb or 3 x 4gb or 4 x 4gb.

If it's money,get 2 x4gb now and add more 4gb modules later.

Okay, I have recently found out I will not be getting my Social Security Disability check for about a month, so I probably won't see my SW until March. I just want to know what I'll have to do when I get it or if things will change by then. I mean upgrading drivers and whatnot. Also, is the SW still the way to go in a month or so or should I hold out for something else?

They install the best drivers at time of sale. Best means most stable. They may or may not update at Asus, really depends on if issues or not.;)

The signature thing is just one preventative option.

More effective would be withholding the first post to be examined and approved before putting it up for viewing.

This must be done quickly after the post is made.

We must presume most new members are not bots or real people joining to advertise for free.

Waiting an entire weekend or overnight for moderation is not acceptable.

Captcha is a failure.Eyes on and IP domain banning is better.

Nothing is 100% perfect but the harder it's made for the bots the better and safer the site will be.

BTW XOTICPC employees cannot do their assigned jobs and be expected to be forum moderators also.

I run a 4X4 web forum and we have been getting hit hard as well. What I do to keep them out of the forums is use the latest captcha as well as a simple question added to the registration page. For example what color is our logo? If you are a bot you wouldn't be able to read the question therefor no correct answer.

After that I have it setup so that your first 5 posts have to be approved before you have free range posting ability. I found 5 is the best # because some bots post up like crazy and can get past the five quickly.

I have 4 volunteer mods so most people don't have to wait very long for there posts to be approved. So far it is working for us and keeping the bots out.

not very likely, unless you can find an ASUS G73 specific upgrade. Because as far as I know Asus uses a reverse style MXM slot (I dunno if the SW even uses MXM) so getting one that is going to work with that is very unlikely.

I was wondering how much glare (if any) everyone who owns a G73SW is getting on their screen. I noticed yesterday an new option for the SW has been listed:

17.3" FHD 16:9 "Matte Type" Super Clear Ultra Bright LED Anti-Glare Screen (1920x1080) ( + 195 )

I'm looking at the G73SW (possibly the G53SW when/if it comes out) and have only owned matte screens in my previous laptops. From reading the colors are supposed to be "brighter" on the glossy screen, but worry about reflections and glare.

Thanks

I'm looking at the G73SW (possibly the G53SW when/if it comes out) and have only owned matte screens in my previous laptops. From reading the colors are supposed to be "brighter" on the glossy screen, but worry about reflections and glare.

Thanks

I have not had any issues with glare, certainly if I am sitting on the porch in the sun there will be some but I have not had any problems with the screen. In fact it is pretty amazing for a laptop screen.

Note that normally if you want to upgrade to DDR3-1600 you will have to upgrade the processor too as the i7-2630QM does not support ddr3-1600 (http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=52219&processor=i7-2630QM&spec-codes=SR02Y)

The benefit of getting 1600MHz with a CL9 vs 1333MHz with CL9 is when the 1600MHz downclocks to 1333MHz it's CL might drop to say CL8? And no that is likely not worth it. But it could be argued even 1600MHz is not worth it. My 1333MHz has a read bandwidth of 15GB's. Not sure how much real world benefit one might get going higher?

1. Does de G73SW use this new EFI GUI bios ?
2. Technically, the I7-2xxx processors are triple chanel memory capable (that's DDR3) and would normally require 3 matched memory sticks per bank in a triple channel configuration. Okay, first, do I want 1600Mhz RAM or should I stick to stock? Next, do I want SATA III for my SSD? The only SSD with SATA III is the 128 gig one and it has slower read and write times than the 90 gig, and the 120 gig ones. Does that matter? I can get an SSD as primary, an HDD as secondary and a BD writer, right? What do I want for my wireless card? I get about 20Mbps down, wired. Lastly, should I upgrade the sound card? Thank you in advance!

I'll take a stab at this.

I think someone posted previously the jump from 1333-1600 isn't that big?

I got the 120 Gig one, it's ultimately up to you as far as whats more important. You say the one with 8 gig more space is slower read times, so faster read times, for 8 gig more space. Your call there. (I went with the 120 ;))

I did SSD primary and HDD secondary. For wirelss card, I think 6300 is the recommended one for better range and speeds, I did 6200, because mines not really going around a big house, and I don't care about the difference in speed as it really doesn't affect me since I'm wired most of the time.

Soundcard I would not upgrade unless you plan on actually putting it to use with an expensive audio setup or really really good headphones. If all you're doing is connecting a L and R speaker setup, or a cheap $30 headset from bestbuy, the upgraded soundcard is a waste.

Thats my 2 cents, but I'm kinda nooby, so I'm sure I'm wrong about SOMETHING :p

Okay so first things first. If you upgrade your cpu to the 2720 (which is awesome) I would also get the 1600mhz ram, and if you do not upgrade the cpu don't bother since the 2630 cannot take advantage of those speeds.

Second, get w/e size you want of the Crucial C400 when it comes out which should be SATA III since your board can take advantage of the read/write speeds SATA III offers.

Thirdly it makes no difference what your wired speeds are since we are talking wireless. If you have a N capable router then I would suggest getting the upgraded ones that take advantage of those speeds. If not, I would not stress about it unless you were planning to upgrade your router too. (I have mine wired for gaming and never go wireless unless I am at school or something where I will not be gaming and so do not care what upload download speeds I get). So kinda a personal choice on that one.

Just got off the phone with xotic. Got the option to finish production on my machine, wait for the fix, or switch to another machine.

I decided to finish production and deal with the fix later. If it is only a 5% chance of a 10% decrease in speed over the next 3 years I think I can deal with it. I will worry about sending it in to get it fixed after the initial rush is over. At least I will have a laptop to use now.

WiFi Smog

Stock WiFi cards in many new notebooks are single band and 150mb/s bandwidth with one or two antennas.

The 2.4ghz band that the single band cards use is subject to interference from microwaves and bluetooth signals. This interference can be called WiFi Smog.

At home, the 5ghz band can be used without worry about 2.4ghz WiFi Smog if you have an Intel 6000 series duel-band wireless card.

The 300mb/s~450mb/s wireless routers can differ in ability to use both bands simultaniously.

Coupled with a 3 antenna MiMo duel-band 450mb/s router a 3 antenna Ultimate N 6300 can take advantage of 450mb/s bandwidth and 3x3 broadcast/receive.

The Advanced N 6200,6230,6250 are also duel-band with 2 antennas and should be used with a 300mb/s ~450mb/s duel-band 3 antenna MiMi wireless router for 2x3 broadcast receice. These cards are limited to 300mb/s bandwidth.

Dumb is only when you don't ask questions.

Yes,I think it's time to update your router if you:

Buy a new notebook and put a new Intel wireless N duel-band network adapter in it.

If you do the choices will be 300mb/s bandwidth with a 2 antenna Advanced N 6230 or a 3 antena 450mb/s Ultimate N 6300.

Both choices are good and will satisfy almost all wireless bandwidth needs providing you have good broadband Internet service.

Wth an Advanced N 6230 the Netgear 3700 duel-band wireless router is good. It's been around awhile.A better choice is to go with the newest tech in the form of the 2 wireless routers listed below and they shouldn't cost any more than the Netgear 3700.

I have 2 laptops with the Ultimate N 6300,excellent Internet service but a Duel-Band Netgear 3700 300mb/s router.

I wish to buy the TRENDnet TEW-692GR 450Mbps Concurrent Dual-Band Wireless Router when it becomes available.

or

The Cisco Linksys E4200 Duel-Band Wireless N Router With 3x3 MIMO Antenna is available now and some forum members have purchased it.

Will a wireless router cover everything and have the ability to connect wired stuff, too? Is Wi-Fi the same as wireless?

The Wireless Routers usually have 4 or more ports on the rear for the wired R45 jacks on the ends of lan cables.

I have my desktop PC and a 40" Samsung LED LCD TV wired to a Netgear 3700.

I have 2 notebooks,a netbook,a Playstation 3 and a Samsung CLX-3185WK color laser printer connecting wireless.

I'm thinking of the new TrendNet wireless router over the Cisco/Linksys because I prefer the antenas to be external. The concurrent dual band technology sustains both 2.4GHz and 5GHz wireless networks at the same time, and MIMO antenna technology enables it to handle three spatial streams per antenna

The MiMo routers bounce the wireless signals off all objects in their path to reach every corner of the house or apartment.

During 2010, Trendnet introduced its (and also the world's) first 450Mbps Wireless-N router, the TEW 691GR, and the TEW 690AP Access Point. Both of these products, however, support only a single wireless band, operating in the 2.4GHz frequency.
Now at CES 2011, the company continued the effort on the faster N speed by announcing and demonstrating the first 450Mbps true dual-band router, the TEW-692GR.
This is the first router for general consumers that offers the ceiling speed of 450Mbps in both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz wireless bands. The true dual-band notion means that the router can sustain separate 2.4GHz and 5GHz wireless networks at the same time.

The TEW-691GR may be the best router if you can or will only connect on the 2.4ghz band.

If you will have an 6200,6230 or 6250 Advanced N consider the Cisco E3000 or the Netgear 3700.

Consider the E2000 only if you will be close to the router.Signal reception degrades quickly as you move away from the router.

If you are opting for the Ultimate N 6300 then the first choice should be the TrendNet TEW-692GR.
Second choice the E4200.

The E4200 takes a big hit on the 5ghz band while using both bands simulaniously.

Maybe not a lot of people in the US have 450 Mbps download speeds on wireless to begin with and traffic will need to be reduced.

Does anyone of you know if ne the Models with the repaird chipset will have new names?

And one other thing. Did anyone of you have chance to do a comparison of the 2D and 3D-Pannels. I heard that the specs of the 2D(glare) are better (contrast and colours), but at the same time it should be uesless when you are in the sunlight.
The 3D-Pannel should be much brighter, but with less contrast and not so great colours. Oh and it should be matt and like this ideal for working outside or for example in a train.

I would appreciate your help, because I am just not able to decide whether I should by the G73SW-91084V (1899€) or the G73SW-TZ083V (1799€).

Run this free utility:

Thesycon’s DPC Latency Checker is a Windows tool that analyses the capabilities of a computer system to handle real-time data streams properly. It may help to find the cause for interruptions in real-time audio and video streams, also known as drop-outs. The program supports Windows 7, Windows 7 x64, Windows Vista, Windows Vista x64, Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 x64, Windows XP, Windows XP x64, Windows 2000.

http://www.thesycon.de/eng/latency_check.shtml

About 500 is average.

In the 200 range is very good.

In the 100 range is excellent. Thanks for that link. I have used in the past but had lost it's name and everything else.

My highest is around 1500 on two different routers. But it goes all over the board. Looks like anything 1000 and under is good (green) 1001/2000 OK (yellow) 2001+ bad (red). I have more green than yellow no red. It says I should not have problems for what that is worth?

Real world I do get occasional short dropouts watching TV streaming.

186 max sounds awesome I wish I had that.;)

If you are not using any bluetooth devices it's best not to run it at startup and maybe even uninstall the driver to save resources.

Run msconfig and go to startup and uncheck bluetooth.

While you're in msconfig open boot>advanced options to see that your cores are present as well as memory.

Interference causing devices include microwave ovens, cordless phones, Bluetooth devices, wireless video cameras, outdoor microwave links, wireless game controllers, Zigbee devices, fluorescent lights andWiMAX.

Motion detectors, which appear in many homes and offices for lighting control and security, are a good example of devices that can cause wifi interference.. A new breed of hybrid motion detectors uses a combination of passive infrared sensor (PIR) and 2.4-GHz radar to detect motion. These devices, which look identical to their benign predecessors, generate significant interference that can disrupt your Wi-Fi network.

It is generally true that fewer devices currently operating at 5 GHz are causing interference as compared to 2.4-GHz devices. But this will change over time. Just as everyone moved from 900 MHz to 2.4 GHz to avoid interference, the "band jumping" effect will catch up with 5 GHz. Some devices that already exist at 5 GHz include cordless phones, radar, perimeter sensors, and digital satellite.
Strong Wifi signals will eliminate a lot of interference. The farther your recieving unit(notebook) is located from your wireless router/access point the weeker the reception thusly more interference.

You will need to change your drive settings within the bios, change it to IDE and it should work fine.

No worries on the firmware update, it was frustrating for me as well since no one ever mentioned that part of it in the work around, but glad it worked for you.

I did some searching around for that driver on he webcam issue and have not been lucky. I would call Asus when you get home or w/e and see if they can help you out.

If either them or Xotic cannot get it working without sending it in, I would not worry about it since we are all getting new SW's in April and you can just switch it out.

Pretty sure it is just a standard laptop blue-ray player. I think this will work.

http://www.getpartsonline.com/bc-5500s.html

But I doubt it will be cheaper. If you want blue-ray just buy it now for the $80 or whatever it is and not worry about it. Or if you don't need/want it just downgrade but the SW comes with it in the stock config.

At this point I am just sticking with the SW and will build a desktop in a few months for the super gaming machine. For now I am happy, especially after how it handled Cysis 2 multiplayer, which it did great by the way. As for which model I get when the recall stuff happens, I still do not know. I will likely get whatever refresh is available if it is an upgrade of sorts. If not I will just stick with the model I have since I do like it quite a lot.

Maybe I'm wrong here, but why would I want to upgrade the parts warranty? If my 460 (or whatever card) breaks in 2 years, wouldn't they just give me a new one? Why would I use the same card in 2 years as opposed to buying a new card? For this reason, I don't see a purpose for upgrading the parts warranty unless you plan on using the same shit for a long time.

I cannot say I know what you're talking about. There are many cards that cannot be upgraded, so if it did die, you would indeed be replacing it with a new card. If I even understand what you mean, which I am in no way certain that I am lol.

Yeah, I didn't really know how to word it, sorry. Basically, I'm saying, what's the point of extending the warranty for new parts? If you can't upgrade the GPU then getting a new one of the same model would make sense, but when else would you buy the same model GPU years after the original? If I get a Sager 8170-S1, why should I extend the parts warranty? All they're going to do is change my broken 485 with a new 485, am I correct? Or if my 2630 breaks, they're going to give me another 2630, not a 2720. In 2 years or whenever, I'm going to want new stuff, so the warranty extension seems dumb.

Either that or let's say your 485 goes out, and it is no longer under warranty to fix it would cost you $900 for the kit. Easier to swallow buying a new laptop rather than shelling out $900 for a vid card. Ya know?

I probably saw it, just don't recall. But if you're talking about the image like when you press one of those buttons staying on the screen, no I do not nor have I ever had that issue. I will check tonight if it even shows up for a second when I press one of them as I do not recall seeing them before, just the lights on the side of the keyboard indicating cap or numlock.

Does that answer your question? If not I am happy to look at something for you.

You know what, I say that both Crysis and Metro were broken as shit and I believe they fixed it with the new Crysis because it looks better than the previous game and yet it plays better on higher settings, and this is not the only games I have seen that on. So yeah, for the most part, the machine should handle the games with little fuss. On max settings every time? Probably not, but very high nonetheless. So I think you'll be happy with it. Despite my slight hissy fit I had the other day I am pleased as peaches with mine.

Hey Scar, I know you've been torn between ASUS and Sager, just wanted to let you know that you will not lose the BT functionality on an ASUS since they have a separate slot for it. For Sager, however, the wifi models listed with BT (stock card and N-6230) will have the BT built in, whereas the N-6300 will lose built-in BT capability. That's why we have the USB adapter option listed for the Sager models. :)

It just depends on whether or not you got upgrades. It looks like you added another 8gigs of ram, so it usually (if in stock) takes a day or so to process, then they ask for payment, then they send it to the folks that will do the upgrades and all that. So all in all, it on average takes 12 days to get everything all settled and shipped, at least this is from what I have seen on the forums.

How do you, or how did you, pass the time?

Forum trolling on this site lol ;) JK, but yeah, just learning all I could about the machine itself and what other users went through with previous models. There are updates that need to be done right away, frimware updates and stuff that needs to be done, not to mention bios update to 205. So I just spent my time figuring out what needed to be done so it was not as difficult.

Scheduled Delivery:Thursday, 03/17/2011, by 3:00 P.M. (by end of day for residential deliveries)

YESS!! its like Christmas all over again. :)

I'm crossing my fingers on the chance that I get a model that don't have a refresh sticker...other than that I'm dying of the wait.

Finally got around to order my Sw yesterday

ASUS G73SW-A1

Intel® Core™ i7-2720QM with IC Diamond Thermal Compound
GeForce GTX 460M
8,192MB (8GB) DDR3 1600MHz CL9 Kingston Hyper-X Dual Channel Memory
Cobalt Blue Backlit Keyboard Modification
4X Blu-Ray Reader
500GB 7200RPM 16MB Cache Buffer
No 2nd HDD.
Intel® Ultimate-N 6300

I opted for no second hdd as I intend to snag a vertex 3 once they come out and Xotic has the option to leave the brackets inside in the second bay for 30$ so I have them in the machine for when I need them.

Now all I need to do is join the waiting game.

P.S. : Thanks Brett for all the info and support.

Hello.
I have G73SW-TZ123Vwith 1x4GB RAM in slot 1
According to specification and documentation there are 4 DIMM slots.
1st and 4th are accessible.
2nd and 3rd are not accessible.
Does anybody knows how can I upgrade to 16GB ?
How can I put 2x4GB to hidden slots at back side of motherboard ?

According to specification
http://www.asus.com/product.aspx?P_ID=KeYVsP7c4mgNmh2B
DDR3 1333 MHz SDRAM,4 x SO-DIMM socket for expansion up to 16 G SDRAM Quad Core
and documentation manual at
http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/nb/G73SW/e6110_G73Sw_eManual.zip
page 70
DIMM slot 2 and 3 at the back of the motherboard and will be populated by memory at the factory

but how can I upgrade my G73SW to 16GB
if there is 4GB RAM not in slot 2 or 3 from factory but in slot 1 ?

Is there any way to upgrade it for 16GB ?

Thank you

Roman

LOL, I went through the same thing. I still think you're getting more bang for the buck with the Asus. Though if you have the extra $600 to spend with the 485 upgrade with the extra parts warranty (if the 485 fails after a year it costs $900 to replace so extra warranty is good) more power to ya.

So my 2 cents is this, I like the look and the feel of the Asus, it performs like a champ, the warranty is great, and the price point is hard to beat. I can tell you this, I am a heavy gamer and this machine has not disappointed me yet. I did have a slight fit when my Rift fps was not where

I felt it should be, but played on a friends desktop with a 570 in it and he was getting similar fps as me on a laptop so I feel pretty good about it.

So if you have the money to throw around and it sounds good to you, more power to you, but for the money, the Asus has my vote.

As for the folks not wanting to wait any longer, it will just take more time if you ordered something else, especially the Sager since they are still processing the folks who got there before you. Try to hang tight and see when you get it, if it does not live up to your standards (which I doubt it wouldn't) send it back and get something else, you have 15 days to change your mind.

I want to clarify something. Baseline configs the Asus is cheaper by a slight margin. The downside is you lose somethings for that. The DVI port, the PC express port, the option to use hardware RAID, and an inability to upgrade your GPU.

The other problem is once you start upgrading the Asus it becomes exponentially more expensive than the sager.

So baseline configs the ASUS has a good price point, beyond a couple of specific upgrades the sager is cheaper.

I placed the order on the 11th, got status 2 on the 14th and then just got the shipping notice today. I even downgraded the optical drive and changed to an ssd as primary. I'm not sure why mine would go out before yours.

Hope you get your status update soon! Waiting is killer.

Yeah, I ordered mine on 10 Mar, so when I saw those who ordered after me had already received their laptops, I was completely perplexed. Just got updated to Phase 2 today but apparently it's been in Phase 2 since Friday, it just wasn't updated on the website (no big deal). Just sucks waiting because, naturally, I'm as impatient as the typical person. If I had known I could have already been playing with this beast by just ordering a completely stock configuration, I would have spent the $40 I saved. Essentially it would have been rush shipping with a free Blu-Ray drive at this point, lol.

Guess this is what I get for trying to save money, ha.

Congrats on getting the ship notice. Let us know how you like it once you finally get it. :) I'll be sure to do the same.

Got mine today, and I've been updating and configuring and playing around all day.

First impressions, Damn it's sexy looking. The G73 takes up a lot of desk space, but the way it does it makes the desk look better for it.

It's cool. Not just in the "hey, the rubberized texture (smooth rubber, not knobbly) is cool" way, but also in the heat department. Running nonstop through normal use and benchmarking for 8 hours now, and still room temperature to the touch top and bottom. PC health indicates the top end temperature I was able to inflict on the processor was 68c. Not bad...

The only game I've run on it so far is WoW, and it Eats Ultra settings and Shits FPS. I cannot wait to try it on the new Need for Speed or maybe dust off Crysis, a game my old PC took one look at and said "F you, buddy!"

Paranoid note:
It's quiet, too quiet. I think it's plotting something.

The lighted keyboard is plenty bright, and the keys are responsive and feel good under my hands. Having never used a chicklet keyboard before I find it easy to feel the key positions for touch typing, even if I don't get that satisfying "thwick thwick" sound of rattling keys.

The added extras are great, the bag is solid and fashionable, and the mouse is of decent quality. Rubberized like the PC, the mouse is smooth, feels good in the hand, and positions buttons 4 and 5 above and below the ball of the thumb, making twitch clicking easy. That said, I tried it out for about 20 minutes and handed it to the wife, I'm never giving up my Razer Naga.

I ordered on the 9th and received the 21st, 12 days (including the two that UPS stole from me this weekend) from start to finish. I deviated from stock by adding 8GB of RAM, 16GB total, and considering the horrors the techs had to go through to get the 4th stick in there, I think the turnaround was very reasonable.

I'll post again later with some real numbers, maybe, but for now my bed (and the wife) calls.

This is very true. Though I will say upgrading the GPU later does not really seem like an option, spending $900 on a GPU down the line does not sound like an option. What I was referring to was simply the base package cost for what you get, I feel the Asus is a better bargain without upgrades, with obviously the Sager wins out.

the HD6970M is an upgrade and it costs only 610. so still a bit above what I might consider reasonable for latest tech GPU, but not that far out. You can probably find one in about a year or so for about 350 dollars I would imagine.

The bigger problem is getting a company to produce upgrade parts for laptops, if the quantity were higher then the prices would be slightly lower.

Ya, the ASUS does look good and the global warranty is a must for me right now, so I'm not bummed with it. I just keep hearing about how much better the 485 is, but really I won't be gaming too much on it. I do play Rift as well, and from your other posts I believe you said you get around 40fps on high? I might remember what you posted wrong, but if thats the case I can definitely deal with that. Right now I'm barely able to run it on low. Also, SC2 is my other game of choice and I'm sure the 460 can tear that up.

I ordered mine on the 2nd of March and am still phase 2, so I hear ya. I think the people getting it before us ordered stock though. I felt I should upgrade the CPU and memory a tad, plus the 6300 adapter. Oh well, it should be done soon at this point.

Ah man, that sucks. Hope you see yours soon.

Yeah, they did order stock. That's what I meant when I said I should have kept the Blu-Ray drive. My order is completely stock minus the Blu-Ray drive; I took it out for a regular CD/DVD drive. If only I had kept the Blu-Ray, I might be typing on that beast right now, haha. :P

It's all good. I have confidence I'll see it within a week; and if not, it's all good, the wait is worth it regardless. I wouldn't purchase a laptop from anywhere else anyway. Only reason I'd cancel this order is to upgrade to a Sager also, but I'm beyond that now.

Ya I contacted them on Friday, it wasn't updated but it had gone into phase 4. I appreciate the help!

I don't fault Xotic for the build times, this is my first time ordering a non stock computer, so it was mostly just me being unfamiliar with how much time this process takes. Next time I'll just have to plan better on my end.

Off topic question, but as this is the owner's lounge, I was wondering if anyone knew how the 460m compared to the 260 desktop GPU. Is this better or worse? Thanks!

GTX260 (Desktop card)

CUDA Cores - 192
Graphics Clock (MHz) - 576 MHz
Processor Clock (MHz) - 1242 MHz
Texture Fill Rate (billion/sec) - 36.9
Memory Clock (MHz) - 999
Standard Memory Config - 896 MB
Memory Interface Width - 448-bit
Memory Bandwidth (GB/sec) - 111.9

GTX460M

CUDA Cores - 192
Graphics Clock - 675 MHz
Processor Clock (MHz) - 1350 MHz
Texture Fill Rate (billion/sec) - 16.1
Memory Clock (MHz) - 1250
Memory Interface Width - 192-bit
Memory Bandwidth (GB/sec) - 60.0

*Graphics clock = Core speed
**Processor Clock = Shader speed

So the GTX460M has faster core, shader and memory clocks, but due to the smaller memory bus is worse off. With the same amount of CUDA cores I would expect it to be about 10-15% slower than the GTX260 desktop card. I can tell you that in Rift I get about 35-50 FPS constant no matter what so far.

30-50 even on High or ultra? Sounds good to me honestly, I don't always need 60fps or more, so I'm easier to please I suppose.

The GTX260 desktop is the recommended card for The Witcher 2 as well. I was hoping I'd be able to max that game out, but I should hopefully be able to get close to high on it. Thanks for the detailed comparison, much appreciated.

So it finally came yesterday. I opted to install a clean Win7 to get rid of all of the bloatware. Right now I'm currently in the process of updating the drivers and downloading the essentials. I'm kind of stuck right now on how to actually add drivers other than the devices that offer the simple "update driver" button.

At this time, I haven't updated any drivers because I wanted to follow SmogHog's guide (http://www.xoticpcforums.com/showthread.php?t=10074) and update them in that order. I haven't even added the Intel RST driver because I don't recall seeing the "add driver" screen when Win7 was installing. Hell, I never even had to enter my product key as I had presumed was necessary.

If anyone can help with this, that'd be awesome. Meanwhile I'll be googling away to see if I can find out how.

edit: As soon as I get everything updated, I'll probably break it in with SC2 on maxed settings because my last laptop could barely handle it running it on low. After that, I'll shop around on Steam for my first time and try to find a graphics intensive FPS to play on.

Did you actually delete the old partitions and create new? If not that might be the reason you didn't have to enter a key.

The only drivers that I am aware of loading while in the windows setup is raid, and you do not have raid. I am under the assumption he meant install all the new drivers once W7 is done installing.

I did delete all the partitions but then it would not let me format it; it kept it as unallocated space. So I formatted the other disk and installed Win7 on it, which was completely free of anything because not only did I format it, but the OS was installed on the other disk originally. It never asked for a key though; it only asked which OS I wanted to install and gave me the different Win7 variations to choose from. Win7 installed fine and all of the Asus bloatware is gone, so I don't think there is any problems unless all of this just sounds completely wrong to you. Finally getting all of these drivers installed though. Soon I'll be able to beast on this thing. :)

I finally figured out how to enter my Win7 key. I still do not fully understand why it did not prompt me during the installation, but I noticed that under Computer Properties the "Change Product Key" option was missing. It has something to do with some files not being recognized or something to that effect (can't recall exactly, sorry). After some google-fu, I learned how to change the key via CLI. I'll post it here in case someone needs to know in the future.

Click on the Start Button and type: CMD (into the 'Search programs and files' field in the Start Menu)
The Start Menu will show 'CMD.exe',
Right-click the CMD.exe file and select Run As Administrator.
In the CMD window, type: slmgr.vbs -ipk <type your product key here>
To activate windows after changing the key, type: slmgr.vbs -ato

If everything works accordingly, after entering the first line, wait a few seconds and you'll see a popup saying it was successful. After the activation line, wait a few seconds again and another popup will notify you that it has been activated.

Hey all. Which screen do you guys recommend getting? I think I would prefer the matte screen as long as it has good contrast and color accuracy. Do any of you currently have the matte screen?

Also, why do they charge such rediculous upgrade prices? $399.00 to go from a 2630QM to a 2720QM? That's just plain rediculous. Lastly, will this laptop ever be offered with the 6970M? The 460M is decent and all, but the 6970M is much more powerful.

In answer to your question about the 6970, not in this model, as it stands now Asus models does not support upgraded GPU's and cannot be done. As for the CPU, it is simply much more difficult to swap the CPU in an Asus, if you watch the teardown videos. Asus offers a great package at a great price, but the upgrade paths are expensive. Just the way it is.

Here's Why:
If your Asus was shipped with Windows 7 Home Premium preinstalled means it has a 2.1 bios.Vista units shipped with 2.0 bios.

Adding the Asus $OEM$ into the Sources folder of the installation disk will have the OS recognize the Asus bios and install the Asus OEM key and certificates for activation. It also add Asus logos, themes and wallpapers.Adding the Asus $OEM$ eliminates the need to use the System Builders key from the sticker on the bootom of the notebook.

The Asus $OEM$ from my link is only for Home Premium. The other versions of Windows 7 have a different $OEM$ folder.

The "add driver" option in the Windows 7 setup is in the last screen of the setup before the files start unpacking and installing. There's disks options at this screen to format and delete partitions also. You should format and delete all partitions here also.

The Intel RST is not only for RAID.It also adds enhancements for ACHI.

After the OS is installed the chipset installation software MUST be installed and also Turbo Boost driver/software.

Hm, I guess I'll have to wait for the next version then. I think the Dell XPS or Alienware offers the 6970M but I like the styling of the ASUS more. I wonder if the body design will change with the next version though.

The next ASUS? The next one (G74) looks almost identical to the G73/53.

I just got mine, but was shocked when I found out the default network card doesn't pick up 5GHz (but my girlfriend's $600 3 year old laptop does). Upon further inspection though, the default card does support n, so why is it not picking up 5GHz? Does n not = 5GHz?

N has to equal 5GHZ, because it works on both the 2.4 and 5 GHZ band to give you the higher speeds.
