I've had my Sager NP9261 for over a year or so now, but in the past few months have noticed some serious issues.

The laptop has always run hot, which was never an issue in and of itself. I have a cooler that I got with the original rig, and it has, up until now, seemed to get the job done.

However, lately the system has taken to shutting itself off completely when attempting to play certain games (Fallout New Vegas, Batman Arkham Asylum and Civ V). This did not used to be an issue, and has only started happening in the past little while.

I made a point of cleaning out the fans, but it still seems to be an issue. Has anyone else had this problem? Would a better cooler do the job? Any advice appreciated.

First off you may want to make sure it is heat that is causing the issues. Download RealTemp to monitor temp issues. Is it just shutting down or is it BSOD? Only for certain games? I would just check your temps and then go backwards from there, could need some new thermal paste, cleaning, etc, or it could be something else entirely. Just need to find which one :)

It could be more than a heating problem.

Virus, corrupted windows files, faulty HDD, etc.

Start with the RealTemps, and we can move on from there.

Hey guys, thanks for the help, first of all.

For the record, no I am not getting any BSOD. When it shuts down, it just does so, and usually I have to wait a few minutes before it will start back up--this leads me to believe that it is a heat issue.

I downloaded the RealTemp app, but have not had a chance to run any games yet. However, just using my system for regular reading/writing usage she is running at about 78-80C. Minimum of 78, Maximum of about 85 it seems. "Distance to TJMax" 19-21.

That seems a little high, no? I can update once I have had a chance to run some of the Games that have been causing issues.

85 isn't too bad, a bit high for idle though.

The GTX 460 has a shut-off limit of 120c. It will spam alerts once it gets to 110c or 115c. So that doesn't sound like it's a GPU overheating issue...

Hmm, interesting. No, I can't say I have ever received any warnings or anything of the sort.

When I first boot the system up, she runs around 63-65C, and then steadily grows to around 80 as mentioned. Like I said, haven't tested with Games as of yet.

My desktop PC used to shut off all the time by itself. I had it cleaned by a professional a few months ago and it hasn't shut off once since then. I got a temp program now to see where I'm at and so far I'm around 42 surfing the net. I had to get the program called Core Temp because Real Temp didn't support my old ass CPU.

A thermal shut down can be very abrupt. Make sure all your fans are working and not making excessive noise. Next make sure the thermal paste under the heatsinks are adequately covering the surface to be conducting heat. Occasionally the manufacturing process fails in adequately covering the heatsink.
