INTEL Recall of Sandy Bridge CPU's!???
Intel finds Sandy Bridge chipset design flaw, shipments stopped and recalls beginning -- Engadget (http://go.notebookreview.com/?id=525X832&xs=1&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.engadget.com%2F2011%2F01%2F31 %2Fintel-finds-sandy-bridge-chipset-design-flaw-shipments-stopped%2F&sref=http%3A%2F%2Fforum.notebookreview.com%2Fsager-clevo%2F551892-intel-recall-sandy-bridge-cpus.html)

I don't think they have moved the sata controller to the CPU yet, so I don't think they are recalling CPUs, guess you have to return your whole motherboard. not 100% sure though.

From what I understand Intel is working with all the manufacturers today to work out the recall procedure and from what I understand it is not with the CPU itself and more with the platform, specifically the northbridge. I guess all we can do is wait and see what happens but I have to admit though this sucks I am pleased with Intel and how they're handling this situation.

Should be interesting though.

so what does this mean for those of us who were planning to buy a laptop with sandy bridge? is there any idea as to when we'd be able to order a non-defective unit?

well, at least waiting for the g53sw seems somewhat more meaningful now.

lots of theories, nothing concrete. No one really knows at this point, probably not even Xotic.

I think it is a little too early to know anything at this point. From what I have seen; all of the manufacturers found out at about the same time we did (this morning) and everyone is now trying to play catch up. So anything I say or anyone else says at this point is simply a guess until Intel releases all the information, and then the other companies decide what to do about it. Bottom line is; it will likely be a while so waiting may be the only option.

One thing that does seem to clear it is only the SATA 3.0 so if the notebook does not have SATA 3.0 no issue?

Which have SATA 3.0?

they all have SATA II for the optical drives. Some have SATA II for the hard drives and some don't.

SATA 2.0 is not an issue if I read correct? I might not of as just got of work and speed read everything. But as I read as I said does not affect all only certain SATA not all that is 100% true.

it is the 3.0 Gbps ports (aka SATA II) and not the 6.0 Gbps (aka SATA III) that are affected.

I read somewhere that the G73SW supports sata 3; can anyone confirm this? Also, if we have a sata 2 drive hooked up to that sata 3 port will the bug manifest itself or will we be safe from it? Thanks, cd

The bug was pretty much only described in terms of the desktop chipset but is said to effect the entire 6 series. They have two SATA III ports and four SATA II ports. The problem is with ports 2-5 regardless of what you have hooked up. So a SATA III, II or I drive attached to port 0 or 1 will not be effected and anything hooked up to the other 4 has a 5-15% chance of going south over the course of a few months.

The correct title for this thread probably would have been"Erratum Discovered In P67 Chipset"

But this doesn't sell newspapers or get bloggers the attention they crave.

The reports of Hell Freezing Over,Fall Of Troy,Armageddon and Intel's demise have been grossly exaggerated.

Especially since the CPUs have not been recalled!

Intel will probably be buying a whole lot of MBs to put on the scrap heaps of Southern Asia, but the CPUs should be pulled and replanted once the new x6x chips come out.

will they really have to do that? i figured it would be as "simple" as replacing the chipset?

I pre-ordered my sager NP5160 on the 24th :( should i be worried? Everywhere I look there is nothing mentioned about the HM65 or any Laptop chipset at all with the Intel issue

This is information from Sager, and yes the Huron River platform is affected as it uses Cougar Point (which is where the issue is).

Intel Series 6 Chipset (Sandy Bridge) Recall Information
Sager and Clevo have consulted together and have decided that both Sager and Clevo will halt all pending shipments of Intel 6 series chipset systems. Models include Sager NP5160, NP5170, NP8130, NP8150, NP8170. (Clevo: W150HNQ, W170HN, P150HM, P151HM1, P170HM).

The current schedule is that starting in the middle of Feb 2011, Intel will start supplying qualification samples of the new revision of Intel 6 series chipset to Clevo. Clevo RD and QC will make it their first priority to test and qualify this new chip revision and prepare for mass production.

Currently the mass production version of the revised 6 series is scheduled to begin delivery from Intel to Clevo in limited quantities at the end of Feb 2011. We estimate that we will resume limited quantity shipment of Sager models NP8130, NP8150, and NP8170 in the middle of March 2011 and limited quantity of NP5160, NP5170 models at the end of March to the beginning of April 2011. Stabilization of shipment for all models should occur by the end of April 2011. Q&A: Q: What if I have already received my system or a system is on the way?

A: The chip flaw at issue should not happen immediately. Please continue to use your system as is. Once the stabilization of shipment occurs, Sager will start a recall program for all affected models that have already been shipped.
We will offer 3 day air both ways shipping to replace the affected systems with a brand new motherboard as well as resetting your warranty period to restart from the date the recall service is completed.
We estimate to start the recalling process between May-June’11.

Q: Should I cancel my pre-order?

A: As the 2nd generation Core processors have shown potential in performance gain in many areas, supply was already on a very tight inventory control. This recall will further restrict supply through the first half of 2011. Our suggestion is that if you do not have any urgent need of a new system, you should keep your pre-order as your credit card will not be charged until we have a unit ready for your order and your consent to go forward. We believe that it would be best to keep your pre-order open as you will not have to restart at the end of the pre-order list.

Yes it is wise as they expect to catch up prior to your departure. If as your departure approaches you can cancel with no penalty if time frame has shifted. Ordering now gets you in line which will only help on faster delivery.

If you have time and want to see the level of frustration and defeat users can experience. Have look at the "Asus G73 wait list". The Huron River guys should start one to document their daily ups and downs. Misery loves company I hear, but I can tell you for certain being alone sucks. We had some fun waiting for the G73 maybe you guys can have fun and blow off a little steam?

Hate to say this, but this is not a pc specific thing, I have heard the rumor mill say the same thing about the new MacBook Pro coming out which also has the Sandy Bridge architecture, that release date is also supposedly being pushed back from what a friend at Apple said.

So no fear mate, apple, orange, pc, or w/e if it has SB chips in it, the recall is in effect. Just be glad when it is fixed you'll have a smoking hot and stable chip :)

LOL.. I have always loved that one.. Though to be fair I am actually having an Apple loving day. My iPhone broke today (with a little help of me dropping it and causing some internal damage), I took it in, the cute girl looked at it, said "what's wrong?" Response: "it broke", cute girl "back up your phone recently?" me "yup this morning" girl: "okay let me grab you a new one"

Sorry for the terrible narration but the point being, it took about 3 minutes to get my new phone and get out with no money and no questions asked, was a pretty pleasing experience.

There are things that I wish the iPhone did/had that a lot of the droids do, but all in all, Apple has me for a phone/tablet customer until the day they screw me but so far I have had many experiences with their tech/sales/repair teams and have been impressed every time, and I have never purchased the extra warranty.

Dropped my work iPad down the stairs, took it in, got it replaced, had screen issues with the next, got it replaced, dumped my iPhone in the spa, got it replaced (though they did this as a favor since there was clear water damage), dropped iPhone 4, replaced and so on.....

Even when I was waiting in line (yes I was one of those) opening day for the new 4 they kept all of us fed, watered, and entertained while in line and have yet to have a bad experience there. Not interested in buying a mac, but the phones and tablets are very useful and simple, add that with the support of their staff, I am sold.

As far as the recall, I'm glad. Intel may have been getting the BIG head lately. Now they will have to look at everything a little closer(get it right). I was in the middle of ordering parts for my "new" build. I was going with the 2600k and ASUS Maximus MB.
My question is, will ASUS have to build another MB for ,after recall, chips?
If not, I'm going ahead and ordering the MB and wait on the CPU.

From what I understand it will require a new board so I doubt purchasing one right now would be a good decision. In reality you can buy your CPU now since there is nothing wrong with it; the issue is with the cougar point for the chipset which will require a new board, not cpu.

PS, I would much rather pay $200 for a phone that does everything I need it to do, plus get the support I want, and not have to worry about "deductibles" for getting a new phone if something happened, oh and also no BS insurance to make sure you're not FU**** if something happens to it and then having to pay $50 for a new phone which is what almost all other companies do at this point. So I would think getting bent over is a matter of perspective, want to pay now or later?

Spot on there old chap. I fucking hate sprint, they have absolutely terrible reception over here, in the middle of my town or in my house, no better than 2/5 bars of reception. Only reason i still have it is because my parents keep making the mistake of renewing their contract which will be put to a stop soon.

Change your address to somewhere that you know has zero service and cannot get a call, call up Sprint and tell them you want to cancel due to no service at your home, sometimes they check other times they don't and you get out of contract. That's what I did when I made the switch from Sprint.

You don't have to actually move. My little bro moved to the middle of freaking KANSAS for the military. I told Verizon (at the time) that I was moving in with him and had noticed that I had no cell reception out there. "Whatever shall I do?" They told me I "could " keep my service and use it when I was back in their area or I could cancel without being charged a fee. My bro said he never recieved anything from them, and I have never had anyone from Verizon say anything. I am currently using Verizon for internet service (mobile broadband) and nothing was ever said when I went in to hook service about 3 years ago.
Now, when I did that, ATT was Cingular, Verizon was half the size they are now. So, you might want to look into their policies and see if they are allowing customers to get of jail free.

AND KEEPER....YOU spend over $200 to get the iphad or iphad4, I spent $150 for my phone. + deductible $200 even. I know PP likes to get bent, but not me. Also, I have never had to claim a phone on insurance. My wife n kids have. I always keep a spare phone around jic. I still have my old HTC TILT in my closet along with several other phones. I just take REALLY good care of my toys.

AND BACK ON TOPIC. Damn I was really wanting to get my hands on the ASUS board!!! I was wanting to have a week or 2 reading the manual and seeing what kinda tweaks and cables I was going to need b4 I bought the PSU. I know, I have read the reviews on the board, but PEOPLE ARE IDIOTS(just look at PP) :)

I just wanted people to know that I called xotic today and they said that it's probably going to be April before shipments of Sandy Bridge parts are back to normal. New orders are not being allowed (I know--I tried to waive the warranty).

It's the same for pretty much every other company, though. I won't name all of xotic's competitors on this forum, but they're pretty much in the same boat (with one exception that is charging $$$$$ for 15-inch models). Ah well,

They did the right thing, its just bad timing. Everybody is getting their taxes done and refunds are in the mail. And you know, with money burning holes in ppl's pocket that they want to spend it on computers!!!!
I have no problem waiting for them (intel) to get it fixed. I started buying computer parts at the beginning of the year and was waiting on tax refund to finish it off. So, I'm waiting. I have to wait n order all the sensitive parts, like gpu/cpu/mb/ram, to know if all is good while it I can still return to NE within the 30 return period.

Well, its like this. No mfg wants to sell you a car with a bad engine, and why would you want to buy a car with an engine that will blow up on you in just a year or two?
Uhhh.... aren't car makers famously reluctant to recall cars that say... can't stop?

This is a problem that might happen and might escalate from annoyance to a non-functional peripheral over the course of three years. Hardly an exploding engine. More like a leaky window.

There is no reason to believe that a user could actually be touched by this issue inside of a year of use. Intel was just burned so badly by the Pentium bug that they are hyper reacting. Their prerogative, but I am just as annoyed with them for this as for when they denied the other was a big deal for months before sorta fixing it.

This is not totally true as there have been several reports of this issue affecting new systems before Intel made the announcement. I think it is situational but to think that it is just not possible that it will affect you in incorrect.

Was it Eurocom that would sell the system? Come on tell us.

Lol, it was Digital Storm and Maingear. But only in a 15.6" form factor, and for crazy amounts of money if you want anything other than a GTX 460 GPU (think $2300+). I was just sooo ready to buy the latest and greatest (just got some money I had been waiting on), and now I can't. *sigh*

Which machines were they selling?:D:D:D

So anyway got some numbers?:D:D:D

That was so shady them selling and upping price.

Keeper do you remember in the movie Titanic when Leo got on the bow and yelled "I am the King of the World", I think you must be having a little of that moment currently. Lord knows I would be. You currently have the latest tech that no one else can get. You won't have any problems with. And when you exchange you get to do a purchase do over?:p That's not a twofer it's a trifer.;)

Friend of mine's desktop just hit the pooch. Won't even turn on anymore.

Got a i7 2600K and the ASUS P8P67 Pro... had the exact issues that were being recalled. Obviously. :)

Sucks that happened though...

Maybe I am wrong, but I have never seen reports of anything except some MB manufacturers seeing this in extended lifespan testing. Fairly certain that is has never been seen in a system running at recommended heat levels or with typical usage patterns.

I have bolded one part of that, because you must have forgotten that part already. I drop my HTC Evo all the time, never had damage. lol:laugh:

Spot on there old chap. I fucking hate sprint, they have absolutely terrible reception over here, in the middle of my town or in my house, no better than 2/5 bars of reception. Only reason i still have it is because my parents keep making the mistake of renewing their contract which will be put to a stop soon.

Would love to try an iphone 4 or an android but again sprint charges like 300$ a phone to get out of a contract. Word advice to any wise, never ever go with sprint.

I have been a very happy sprint customer for 7 months now. I go in to the store, they are nothing but nice. I actually know the manager there personally who set up my phone. He always chats to make sure nothing went wrong since last time. Never does. The only issue is my house is in a universal dead spot. Strange geography I guess. AT&T got 0-1 bars most of the time, Sprint gets 1-2 bars, and if I switch to roaming (Verizon) rarely does any better than 1-2 bars. Hoping to move soon though!! I get good signal everywhere else.

But my whole point of this post is that sprint has good customer service most of the time, and you also must consider that you end up paying about 50% of the monthly cost as ATT or Verizon! (70/month minus company credit union discounts (up to 25%) for unlimited everything, vs. 120/month tiered data with ATT/Verizon).
/rant.:smile2:
I just realized I sound like an infomercial, but Sprint does not deserve all the trash talk they get!
