I'm sending you my shovel.Hope I won't need it anymore this winter.

The mostly black and some yellow snow on the ground here is finally starting to melt.

Today, for the first time since before Christmas the mercury went above freezing to about +6C.

Not exactly beach weather but I'll take it and go to straight to the car wash.

It's been the coldest winter on record here with many days in the minus 15C~20C range.

How about an XOTIC PC sponsored week long holiday in the sun in Honolulu(+27C) for all members with 1 or more rep power?

I'm somewhat glad that I am not home right now.

Northern Iraq with temps hovering around 5c, no snow, just rain every few days.

Back home got hit with about 4 feet of snow... but I do enjoy being out on the snow playing with the sleds...

Yep...........I do remember '67. It was different then, wanting it to snow so you could get out of school and find the nearest hill so you could sled down the side. How about the winters of the late '70s?? Seemed like there was snow on the ground for a couple years.

Northern Iraq??? First tour??? What branch?

Not military... oil fields. :)

If being in Iraq was a stupid idea, being on a rig that can kill me more ways than a gun.

But I have been near Baghdad, Mosul, Kirkuk... Baghdad was the worst about 2 years back. Could hear the bombs going off in our sleeping cabin. We weren't that close at all, just the echoes through the mountains.

This might show my immaturity but if I went to a war zone/war torn country/ place of conflict I feel I would want to be with or one of the guys with guns and heavy armor.

Not as any kind of criticism of the conflict but I get a since this might be the 1st one were contractors outnumbered soldiers. If not in reality at lest in impression. Who is running the show the Generals or the MBA's?

acheronx1 sounds like it could be a very interesting job and location.

I'm in a generous mood today so I'll let you pick one from my collection.

The P90 on the left wall bottom is nice for cose in work and easily hidden under your pillow or jacket.

The "blooper"M79 grenade launcher is above the P90 and above that are 2 really nice shotguns.

The 50cal machine gun on the far right can be mounted on your VW.

I feel so inadequate. I only have:

(3) 1911's
(1) 308
(1) 284 WIN Ackley Improved (this thing is a hammer, had 40% hits at 1806 yards on a 25inx25in target)
(1) Rem 870
(1) Dillon 550 to load .45ACP and .308
(1) Rock Chucker to load the 284 WIN AI

Since I live in the Peoples Republic of California though, I am an outcast:) Oh well, if it wasn't for the nice weather I would of never stayed after I got out of the USMC.

The funny part is... we're out here drilling for oil for the Kurdistan Government. It's predicted that Kurdistan has more oil than even Canada and the USA. Just because of the quality it is here.

And we do have armed security around the rig sites. I could grab a few pictures of the rig if anyone is interested.

I'll take a .50 cal please. ;)

With that Armory I think the US soldiers can come home from the DMZ. You should be able to single handedly take care of the North in any conventional conflict.:p

I can't have a gun in Chicago but that might be changing.

I have only played with 30-06, 30-30, 9mm, 38, 357 mag, bunch of 22's and bunch of shotguns. Bats are so much more personal.

I too am a graduate of Paris Island, so is my older brother and my father. One question, all those lead delivery systems but no suppressors?

I watched the first one, I will watch the others later. Goddamn! I knew about the stealth. But the shooting is still what gets me.

If you know about this, with out me going to wiki. I thought a Canadian had a kill at a mile and a half? Like in Afghanistan or Pakistan? Does not matter there were mountains.

That entire range and wind adjustments fascinates me. At what point does it become educated judgments, feel, guts? And at some point major luck.

Also on the actual shooting under stress, be it running to or just importance of. The control these guys have to have over their autonomic nervous system is insane. They damn near have to be dead to make the shot. A breath, heartbeat, itch will screw the shot?

28 of 35 shots, I started thinking it is 35 shots you must make 28. Not one day making 28. You can retest on shots to demonstrate the skills. Am I correct? Not you shot 35 and must make 28 together.

OK guys at what range should a Marine sniper almost always get the kill. They test 1000yds. What is that about a 1/2 mile.

Currently the longest sniper kill is held by a British sniper using a AI L115A3 chambered in .338LM....it was actually two kills at 2707 yards (one mile = 1760 yards). The shooter admitted it was perfect conditions for the shot (no wind, etc...). Longest kill with a .308 is held by a US Army SSGT at 1367 yards, and that is a LONG way for that round.

Wind reading is everything at longer ranges, but you really have to practice in it to get a feel. My longest shot is 9 hits in 21 rounds at 1806 yards on a 25in x 25in target. I was using my .284 AI (7mm), and the time of flight for the round is about 3.5 seconds....that is a lot of time for the wind to move the bullet around.

Your question about how far for a "one shot, one kill" is brought up a lot on the long range boards. What these guys practice is getting their follow-up shots down to 5 seconds or less from the initial round. So if you do miss, the follow up does it's job. You need to put a lot time behind the rifle to get accustomed to her, I shoot my best when I let my ammo/rifle do their jobs and I basically stay out of their way.

Takes 47 muscles to frown, 17 to smile....but only 3 for a proper trigger squeeze.

Wind drift is the hardest thing to calculate.

Trajectory is learned through a lot of practice with your weapon.

As the range to the target increases so does the amount of wind drift.

At long ranges there will be more than 1 wind deflection affecting the bullets travel to the target.

There are four factors that affect the amount of bullet deflection.
1-wind velocity
2-range to target
3-bullet velocity
4-bullet size and weight

USMC Marksmanship Traing Manual:
"The greater the velocity of the wind, the more the
bullet will be deflected.
As the distance to the target increases, the speed of
the bullet slows allowing the wind to have a greater
effect on shot placement.
A bullet with a high muzzle velocity will not be affected
by the wind as much as a bullet with a low
muzzle velocity.
The bullet's size and weight determine the adjustments
required to compensate for the effects of
wind. The heavier the bullet, the less it will be affected
by wind."

Heat waves causing refraction can play hell with seeing your target.

Rain and snow affects the shooter's comfort level and concentration and not the bullet.

If your bullet does find it's intended target at 1000yds or longer how much energy is left to make the kill.

Now that you have gain first hand knowledge in the art of marksmanship, fireup your COD MW2 and procede to the Special Ops section. How many stars can you get as a single player?

I have 55 of 69 so far.I suck at the timed snowmobile driving.
