So my new G73jw arrived yesterday at my mom's house in AZ. Had it sent there as i do not have my address here where i'm deployed on my bank account which would have caused longer delays in processing. Anyone had a laptop sent to them overseas, more specifically the middle east? Just curious of the time for a rather large package. Our mail has been very quick lately though, last two online purchases i made back in the states both arrived here in less than a week.

Well it should take about the same time as the other packages assuming the Post Office is on the ball.. Every APO is different and it really depends where you are located. It sounds like your at a pretty large FOB and receive mail regulary. When I was in the middle East, the guys up north received mail twice a week. However, at my FOB we would only receive mail once every 1 1/2 to 2 weeks.. its all depends on the logisitcs.

I will tell you to make sure its mailed with insurance and in packaging that doesnt scream LAPTOP.. My daughter waited 6 weeks for a laptop from the states only to find out that it was gone. It was shipped through APO and was packaged in a special Laptop Box (see where I am going with this)..We ended up having to claim the insurance from the post office which ended up being a 12 week process.

Edit: I also wanted to thank you for your service to our great country.. from one service member to another..Stay safe

This is another reason i had it shipped home first. the laptop, backpack and otehr accessories were all packed together in 1 big ass box, wanted her to repackage them in regular priority mail boxes, didn't want them being mailed here with laptop or asus all over the packaging, even though the customs forms will still say laptop on them. How much would the insurance be for $2100 worth of equipment?

You can go to http://postcalc.usps.gov/ punch in all your info and it will tell you exactly how much it will cost for Shipping and Insurance. Make sure to use the US Domestic Mail option as APO is still considered a US address.

Go to the post office website and they have a tool that you can use to estimate shipping and insurance. It will probably cost 60-75 bucks to ship insured. I posted the link earlier but I guess links have to be reviewed by moderators before they are posted..

APO,FPO and DPO are treated as Domestic shipments, not international. The link I tried to post earlier was to the USPS calculator which is quite user friendly.. Non APO International shipping is a nightmare and I wouldnt recommed using the USPS for this type of service..

Look at shipping with DHL Shipping.

They normally get stuff from Canada to Erbil, Kurdistan in about 2 weeks, and in good condition.

APO,DPO and FPO are considered Domestic Shipments and therefore are treated just like a normal package being shipped within the states. No need for international shipping options.

Ah, well, I'm not sure how it works for the military. I'd assume you get a better discount.

Well i decided not to have it shipped out. I am actually leaving the theater soon and will be home in less than 2 months anyway. I could still have my mom send it to me, though with us leaving our mail will stop coming regularily and i could end up waiting anyway. Another good reason to come home haha.

I missed this post!

I'm deployed to Bagram AB, and my signature has my timeline of phases for my order (I did have a processing delay for billing/shipping mismatch, and a daily spending limit).

Shipping out here came USPS, costed about $64.00 (assuming insurance/weight/size increased costs), and overall my order was just over $3500.

Tracking # is next to worthless, it will show progression through the states, but once it leaves the APO processing facility in Europe, you have no idea where it is until it shows up at your APO on station. Which left me antsy. It arrived at the Europe APO facility in about 3 days, and the remaining 8 is completely in the hands of getting the mail aircraft into Bagram from a transition base (like Manas or Al Udeid).

There wasn't any damage to my laptop thankfully. There was a gash in the side of the box, but that was the side with the backpack on it. Thing was covered in tamper-detection tape. My only complaint is that there was a label stuck to the side with the default G53 system specs, so people looking at it could easily figure out what was inside.

I had my laptop delivered to me in Afghan. It took about 7 days from the day it was shipped from Xotic. I have seen a laptop ordered on Monday and received on Friday here. Of-course I am in a hub but, none the less it does get out here pretty fast. The box is not as big as you think and it doesn't weigh over 15lbs. The only asus you see on the box is the tape.

Thanks for the post. I currently am serving in Afghanistan and I am about to order my G73jw-3DE and I need to see what Xotic can do to package it well enough as well as insure it minimize the chances of it getting damaged. I have seen some of the boxes that have came into our position and I am not liking the treatment that it might get on the way to my location. My other issue would be to keep my new toy as clean as possible which is nearly impossible with all the dust around this place.

Haha, yeah. The dust in Iraq is really brutal during the months of July and August. I bring a can of CO2 just to keep the fans clean.

I turn my 3de on for a few hours a day and already it is very dusty. I just blew a bunch of dust out of it earlier today. Get a can of en-dust wipes and some air you will defiantly need it. Also keep the cloth that is sandwiched between the screen and keyboard it keeps your keys off the screen for free.

Thanks guys. Sounds like this is going to be fun! I do have a pelican case with o-ring seals to keep the dust out while I'm not using it. Now...when I am using it is another story. Maybe I need to build a "clean room" lol

Wish I knew! :P And the price to upgrade from 8GB of RAM to 12GB of RAM was extremely cheap at the time I ordered, I figured why not?
