View Full Version : does screen size affect performance?

Hello everyone! I'm new to this site and i have a very basic question

considering the NP8170 and NP8150 can be configured almost exactly the same except for obviously a third drive, raid 0 and screen size (both can get huge amounts of RAM, 485M and the 2920 processor), is there a performance difference between the two? Would the NP8150 be faster for gaming, since it has a smaller screen size, or would it really not matter?

thank you

15" if you're going to be carrying it around a lot.
17" if it will be stationary most of the time.

Two schools of thought:
#1 Get 2630QM,GTX460M,8gb DDR3-1333 and a 120gb SATA III 6gb/s SSD primary drive and replace the notebook sooner.

#2 Get the 2920XM,GTX485M,16gb DDR3-1600 and 256gb SATA III 6gb/s SSD primary driver and keep it a few years.

I'm not a fan of raid in notebooks.

IMO A SATA III 6gb/s SSD as the primary drive and a traditional platter HDD as a secondary storage drive is a better notebook setup.

The Huron River platform support SATA III.Don't waste this feature by putting a SATA II drive in the primary drive position.

Hi there,

The performance between the machine should be the same. The 15" and 17" run 1920x1080 so there should no difference there. Good luck on your choice.

I do intend to get SATA III SSDs, and if i go for the 17", i will get SATA III SSDs in raid ^^. May i ask though -why are you not a fan of raid in notebooks?

Ah i see thank you - so if screen size is not at all a factor (hypothetically speaking of course), the 15" would probably be better since it has the same setup, but costs less.

All the tests I have seen do not show much increase in speeds when running raid 0 with 2 or more SSD's so it seems like a lot of money for not much gain.

- With the same CPU, GPU and resolution the PC 'work' is the same at the same speed.
- Larger screen will drain the battery faster.
- Larger chassis will usually be cooler.

Since the CPUs burst is heat limited at times a 17 might actually be faster, but I can't imagine enough that you would notice.

thank you all for your replies!

@Smoghog - while you do suggest a SATA III drive as the primary drive, it does not seem like the option is even available..

They may be waiting for the new SATA III SSDs to arrive?

You can order with a standard 500gb HDD and put the SSD in later. Then move the standard mechanical drive to the secondary position for storage.

Most modern laptops provide a method of dimming the screen after a period of inactivity or when the battery is in use. This prolongs battery life and reduces wear.

the bot..? ^^

Well, it's a little of topic, but do you know if xotic pc will ever offer the option for SATA 3 SSDs in future? Avadirect does...

Yes the bot. I think Smog's family was hurt by bots or something bad happened to him because of bots. Smog won't talk about it but he hates bots.

Yes Xotic will offer SATA 3.0 just a matter of time.
