Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 official: Tegra 2, Honeycomb, dual cameras (hands-on with video)

Samsung says the 10.1 will be launching in March in both Asia and Europe but it had absolutely no timing details for the US market.

Obviously, the heart and soul of the tablet is its 1280 x 800-resolution 10.1-inch TFT display, and while it's not Super AMOLED or Super AMOLED Plus quality, it looked quite bright at a variety of angles. We'd venture to say that Samsung's using a similar panel as in the original Tab here, which is certainly a good thing. Surrounding the tablet you'll find a SIM slot, 3.5mm jack, and Samsung's proprietary charging cable. Sadly, there's no USB or HDMI ports. The rear 8 megapixel cam has a LED flash and can capture 1080p video, while the 2 megapixel lens centered on the top bezel should suffice for those Google Talk Video calls.

Not bad, wish it had a USB port like the Xoom does.

I'm interested to hear the price. Right now I have to admit that as much as I like the Xoom, the rumored price tag on that bad boy has greatly diminished my excitement.

This looks pretty darn neat.

May have to check it out if it's exported or see when it's in the US.

The Xoom $1199 might not be correct. Does $800 sound any better?

Does the Samsung come with the lock and cable?:D

You need to add this to your home owners/renters policy.

"Your In Good Hands With...."

I believe the Asus Eee Slate EP121 tablet will be close to the same street price.

The Samsung 10.1 tablet being shown is a prototype. The final selling model probably will be somewhat different.

Nah, I was talking about the $800 price, I know tat $1199 is not the actual price or they might as well not even bother with release. As amazing of a tablet as it might seem, at $1199 I could get a fairly decent laptop.

I think $800 is a little too steep still. $700 would be better and $600 would be the preferable price range. Maybe the wifi only one will be $700 but I'm doubting I will buy one at that price.

Yeah I still want to see the Asus one with the slide-out keyboad and how well it functions.

Samsung shows 8.9-inch Galaxy Tab plus slimmed-down 10.1-inch model

As expected, Samsung announced an 8.9-inch Galaxy Tab tablet, but also surprised observers by offering a revamped version of its previously tipped Galaxy Tab 10.1, making it lighter and thinner while downscaling the camera to three megapixels. Priced starting at approximately $470 and $500, respectively, both tablets feature Android 3.0 with a version of Samsung's TouchWiz UI layer, dual core 1GHz processors, and dual cameras.

Both the Galaxy Tab 8.9 and revamped Galaxy Tab 10.1 add to Samsung's line of popular, seven-inch Galaxy Tabs, which were updated earlier this year in a 4G version (http://www.linuxfordevices.com/c/a/News/Samsung-Galaxy-Tab-4G-and-4G-LTE-phone/). They are both built around a dual-core, 1GHz processor instead of the seven-inch Tab's 1GHz Samsung Hummingbird CPU, says Samsung.
An earlier Engadget report said the processor in the larger Galaxy Tabs would be the Nvidia Tegra 2 -- a good guess considering that pretty much all the other announced Android 3.0 ("Honeycomb") tablets have run on the same processor. However, in today's coverage of the event, Engadget said it could not definitively confirm (http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/22/samsung-galaxy-tab-8-9-and-new-galaxy-tab-10-1-thinner-than-the/) the Tegra 2.

Memory options on either tablet start at 16GB, but there are also 32GB and 64GB versions available, says Samsung. There is also an additional 32GB possible via the microSD slot, for a total of 96GB. Both tablets feature three-megapixel autofocus cameras on the back, with LED flash support, as well as front-facing two-megapixel cameras. The earlier 10.1-inch model instead offered an eight-megapixel camera, which was mostly likely shed to reduce cost, size, and weight. Video support is also identical, with 1080p playback at 30fps using MPEG4, H.263, H.264, and DivX/Vvid formats, says Samsung. Video recording at 720p is also said to be available. Common features are said to include 802.11a/b/g/n and Bluetooth, although the 10.1-inch model offers Bluetooth 2.1 support, while the 8.9-inch version offers Bluetooth 3.0. In addition, both tablets offer a USB 2.0 port, gyroscope, accelerometer, digital compass, ambient light sensor, and 3.5mm audio jack, says the company. As before, there was no mention of an HDMI port on either model. In addition, GPS does not appear to be part of the equation. Carrier support was not mentioned, but both new Galaxy Tabs are said to support HSPA+ network speeds of up to 21Mbps, suggesting a likely appearance at new merger partners T-Mobile and AT&T. The original Galaxy Tab was made available on all the major U.S. carriers, as well as on networks around the world. For the 10.1-inch tablet, a Wi-Fi-only model also appears to be planned. Both tablets offer a new version of Samsung's TouchWiz UX user interface layer on top of Honeycomb -- something that Google has previously suggested would not be necessary with the slick new operating system (see farther below). Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9The Galaxy Tab 8.9 has been rumored since earlier this month when Samsung announced today's event (http://www.linuxfordevices.com/c/a/News/RBC-study-on-tablets/). Last week, Samsung released a video teaser (http://www.linuxfordevices.com/c/a/News/Samsung-Galaxy-Player-4-and-5/) on the tablet, suggesting an enterprise focus, and both the 8.9- and 10.1-inch tablets were seen on a Staples training document (http://www.linuxfordevices.com/c/a/News/Staples-tablet-lineup-leak/), tipped for arrival sometime after April.

Aimed at the "mobile professional," the 8.9-inch screen offers the same 1280 x 800 resolution as the 10.1-inch model, says Samsung. The Galaxy Tab 8.9 measures 9.1 x 6.2 x 0.34 inches (230.9 x 157.8 x 8.6mm), offering the same thickness as the Galaxy Tab 10.1, says Samsung. (Both are therefore slightly thinner than the industry leading 8.8mm iPad 2.) The Galaxy Tab 8.9 is said to weigh in at just over a pound at 16.6 ounces (470 grams), and run on a 600mAh battery. Galaxy Tab 10.1, revised versionWhen the surprisingly thin and low-cost iPad 2 shipped earlier this month, a Samsung exec was quoted as saying the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 (http://www.linuxfordevices.com/c/a/News/Samsung-Galaxy-Tab-101/), which was announced at Mobile World Congress in February, might need to be revamped. Later Samsung said the Galaxy Tab 10.1 would remain on schedule (http://www.linuxfordevices.com/c/a/News/Samsung-Galaxy-Pro/), suggesting that the tablet was not in for an overhaul after all. Apparently, however, Samsung was able to quickly shrink the device without delaying the schedule, as the tablet is now said to ship on June 8.

According to an Engadget, the original Galaxy Tab 10.1 design will still appear in the second quarter in Europe on Vodafone's network. That version is thicker (under a half inch) and heavier (1.3 pounds) than the revised model, but will offer an eight-megapixel rear-facing camera instead of the three-megapixel camera on the new U.S. version. The new Galaxy Tab 10.1 measures 10.1 x 6.8 x 0.34 inches (256.6 x 172.9 x 8.6mm), and weighs 20.1 ounces (595 grams), says Samsung. Its 10.1-inch screen offers 1280 x 800 resolution, says the company. Unlike the 8.9-inch model, the 10.1-inch version is said to offer surround-sound stereo speakers.

Samsung Bringing Galaxy Tab 10.1 Tablets To American Airlines Flights

The friendly skies are going high-tech with in-flight entertainment on American Airlines.

On Tuesday, Samsung announced a new partnership with American Airlines that will make Galaxy Tab 10.1 mobile tablets available for premium class in-flight entertainment.

The Galaxy Tab 10.1 is a WiFi-enabled tablet that Samsung bills as the thinnest large screen tablet currently available in the tablet marketplace.

The deal aims to provide premium-class in-flight entertainment, and handing out dedicated Honeycomb tablets seems like the perfect upgrade from those dusty CRT monitors that still hang from the ceilings of many planes today. The airline plans to deploy 6,000 Tab 10.1 devices on "select flights" later this year. The tablets will replace the airline's current personal entertainment device in American's premium cabins on transcontinental flights between New York's JFK and Los Angeles, JFK and San Francisco, and Miami and Los Angeles served with 767-200 and 767-300 aircraft; international flights to and from Europe and South America served with 767-300 aircraft; and transcontinental flights departing from Boston to Los Angeles served with 757 aircraft.

That's a major move, and we suspect it's saving AA a bundle. Those in-headrest screens aren't cheap, nor are the systems they ship with. It's likely that tablets are more affordable, and to the user, more flexible. Interestingly, Samsung will be added "additional memory" to the AA tablets, making them special in yet another way. It's hard to know how these will be distributed, collected, and maintained, and it's even harder to know how late-breaking movies will be kept on the device, but we're looking forward to the next leap in in-flight infotainment. Gogo, and now the Tab 10.1? Flying may just be fun again.

I imagine there will be a reset to presets done after each flight lands for the units that were used during the flight. Can't be giving the next user a unit full of porn and some dummy's personal information.

This is not for the flunkies in the back sardine can called Economy Class. It's for First Class that pay a high tarrif anyway not to chew on their knees and elbowed by the person next to them.Fewer crying babies also.

I always prefer to fly Business Class, especially on longer flights.

I don't see any mention of a price increase.

Should the price of drinking on a plane be any different than in your favorite watering hole?
