Rather than continue to post in the other SW thread, I figure we ought to have our own!

Who all has their G73SW-3DE and how do you like it so far? Mine is still in phase 2, will update once it is here!

I got mine for a week now. So far, i'm very impressed with the machine and XoticPC staff customer service. Thank you very much.

Just one question, if i bought a new SSD to install as my primary HDD, is it possible that I am still able to use my reinstall function from the hidden partition to setup my PC?

Phase 4 mine has shipped!

And micronut, I also got an ssd on mine and they emailed me and asked if I wanted to get a backup disc since the restore partition would not be there. All in all I'm not worried since I have a copy of Windows 7 I can restore from and you can also make your own restore disc, but I'm pretty sure you will not have the restore partition with a ssd as your primary.

Copy your HDD to the new SSD.

See this link.

I don't know if the free offer is still available.

You can try.

Thx a lot Vmuse and SmogHog. I will check it out tonight :) and fredex hopefully you will have it soon :P

FYI This beast does it job so far as I play Crysis 2 (Gamer setting + 3D vision) and Shift 2 (Highest in everything) very smooth :P.

FYI.2 Today Nvidia just adds another driver 270.xx beta including G73sw 3D support + crysis2 profile :) Don't forget to grab it

So far my experience hasn't been as good as I'd hoped, and I haven't even got the laptop yet! I ordered mine a few days ago, but then wanted to change a few things in the order. To do this I had to make a new one to replace the old one. I replaced the order one day later, and in that time they had already ran out of stock somehow (even though when I made the first order, it WAS in stock). So I am quite frustrated now, as I have to wait even longer - already waited weeks and weeks. I'm going to call Xotic tomorrow to confirm a few things.

I just want the damn thing, sick off all this waiting and delays. But we shall see.

Hey LukaZic, sorry about the frustration. :(

Sometimes when a customer requests multiple changes to an order, and the way our system is set up behind the scenes, we do request a new order be placed just to ensure accuracy so the builders get an invoice that is 100% correct.

And for the stock issue with this model...I have to apologize about that as well, we had originally thought ASUS supplied us with enough machines to cover the amount of orders we had. However, we didn't expect such a large demand! We've contacted ASUS and we have another shipment coming to us. I would expect it to come to us at the very earliest by next week, barring any shipping delays and such. :)

We'll definitely keep track of your order and pull a machine for you ASAP. You'll be updated once everything gets straightened out with the stock issue.

You can PM me or email me if you have any questions or concerns, or contact your sales advisor as well.

True, true. I did like the glossy screen, but for the extra $250, I figure 3D can't hurt. The screen upgrade alone is $190, plus the Blu-Ray WRITER upgrade. So, in that case, I'm saving some cash!

I ordered it earlier today! Everything is stock except the HDDs, which I opted to remove one and make the other a 750GB non hybrid since it will just be for storage. I removed the other one so I can get the Vertex 3 when it's available. I'm assuming I get my money back for the brackets if the Vertex 3 comes in?

glorious day!
finally got the email I've been waiting for, and I can now expect the machine early next week. In my fervent wait period I've been all over this and other forums getting all the info I can to make the transition smooth. I've got just a few questions if anyone has the time/patience.
I've decided not going w/ the clean install for now and see if i can just uninstall the progs i don't care to hold onto. so i'm assuming all i really need to take care of upon arrival is driver updates. which ones would you all recommend as necessary right off the bat. I'm assuming the nvidia driver that's constantly updated concerning the 3d view. not sure if there's really any others of supreme signfigance, let me know if i'm forgetting anything.
also, the stereoscopic 3d that is controlled in the nvidia CP, is that running all the time, or does it only kick on when it recognizes a compatible game/movie?
also, does the movie have to be in 3d format? or does nvidia provide software that will post-process movies as well. I've heard tell of a few that exist, not sure if this is capable of converting movies on the fly out of the box.
what does the ATK driver control exactly, as that's been mentioned quite a bit as a problem sometimes.

sorry for the overload here, just crazy excited about this, feel like a 5 year old on christmas eve. i've already got my copy of Fallout NV unwrapped and waiting to go, this is going to kill me...

received the machine today. everything is going great, drivers all updated, everything seems to be working well minus one problem

can not get the 3d option to work. when i hit the button on top left of keyboard that activates the 3d mode it says that its active, but the light around the 3d receiver does not light up.

tried to run the nvidia 3d setup, but it doesnt think 3d is activated.

i cant find drivers anywhere specifically for the receiver, not sure where to proceed from here. tried setting the screen rate to 120, as well as in the nvidia settings, but still getting nothing. im sure its something simple im missing, anyone know how i should proceed, much thanks in advance

little "glitch" ive noticed as a heads up

certain video programs were running really choppy, VLC really choppy even with SD playback, and XBMC as horribly choppy even in the interface. driving me nuts for a bit, and then tried the "disable 3d" button, worked like a charm, everything sped up and smooth sailing after that.

so just remember that's an option to try if you run into unexplainable choppiness

another little tidbit, firefox and IE 9 were running really slow, and i read in another forum to go in the options and "disable graphics acceleration", and that worked like a charm as well, although disabling the 3d works also.

enjoy, i've tried fallout NV and assassins creed brotherhood in 3d, looks ridiculous
just trying to get the setting ironed out. it's trying to run in full up maxed settings upon detection, but 3d chops it up. going piece by piece seeing what i have to get rid of, but makes sense as the GPU has to render x2 images versus 1

No one believes me when I say that 3D is a gimmick. 3D is a gimmick, it is going to take years before they get the hardware hammered out to be able to handle something like a FPS or MMORPG in full glassesless 3D with smooth and flawless operation looking as good as playing in 2D.

If that's the case, is there any reason for someone who is not a hard-core gamer or avid 3D fan to drop the extra coin on the 3DE? I understood that a 2D image on the 3DE display looks improved over the A1.

1 reason only, the 120hz screen. The 120hz screen should look better than the 60hz screen in general. Just don't get it expecting earth shattering performance in 3D.

I am also going to guess that the odd 3D bluray will probably be fun for someone that wants to get them from their netflix account on occasion. The big problem is that unless you get a 3D glassesless TV no one else can watch 3D with you, unless you invest in glasses for everyone that wants to watch.

Yup, I guess you can't go wrong with a faster refresh rate! The matte screen is probably a good thing too. Perhaps future firmware/driver updates might help to improve the 3D experience. Anyway, I'll stick with my initial decision to go with the 3DE. Thanks Maverick!

Well, it is hard to discuss in the way that it is absolutely in personal own preference. For BFBC2, I have to trade off between 1080p + Mid v. 720p + Mid + 3D. For me, it looks far more better in 3D in the way that the graphic turned out to be shaper than in 1080p because the layers had been shift closer to your eyes. But that is just my personal experience. However, it is true in the way that I perfer to go for 3d mode only for at 3D ready level only. Say in Fallout Vegas, which only support at good level, it is very annoy when there are some hollow around mountains.

if they're going to take the time to hammer out the tech, then isn't it really just "in the early stages" of a tech, versus a gimmick? Either way, I'm a huge fan, after seeing the few that are patched to run "excellent" in here, it's ridiculous. I honestly don't see myself opting to play anything in 2d if it's patched to run well, even w/ the glasses.

yeah, it'll be a while before glasses-less operation is possible, but it does look smooth and flawless right now w/ them on in a few of these games

Frankly, it's hard enough for me to look cool gaming w/ a monster of a laptop shaped like a stealth bomber on my lap, i suppose i can take the hit on style points as well for the shades

either way, it's all personal preference i suppose. but when it comes down to it, your right, the 120hz alone is great, and i can attest this matte screen is gorgeous, very very happy i didn't end up w/ another glossy

Actually Asus has already shown a glassesless 3D laptop and many TV makers are also producing glassesless 3D TV's. So that is already on the way to mainstream.

The problem is that just like physx from Nvidia only a some very select games are going to bother supporting 3D with "excellent" results. Almost all of those titles are likely to be TWIWMTBP games that Nvidia has paid to have work that way.

So Gaming in 3D is going to be a Gimmick for the forseeable future until they can finally get something as powerful as the desktop 570 card into a laptop version and until everyone in the gaming segment can afford the hardware to run 3D.

I would love to have a 120 hz screen, a bluray drive, and a GTX570M or something in this laptop; and I may one day, but its still not because I want 3D gaming it'll be because I want to have a stellar media experience.

I ordered mine on April 8th (settled payment about a week later). A little unhappy about that since when I ordered it there did appear to be stock. All of the ETAs I've found in previous threads point to around now or in one week's time.

Can any G73SW-3DE owners please confirm whether the transformer/power supply input is the switchable type? I have a US-type to AUS-type adapter, but it does not step from 240V to 110V. I just don't want to plug it into my 240V supply and get an ominous 'nothing'...

Ya I do agree that it has to be on the mainstream. Right now, the only 3d game that I am playing is crysis 2. I cannot play mass effect 2 (crosshair bug) and fallout Vegas (hollow bug). So basically the support from gaming companies is a big deal. Say there is indifferent in 3d v. Normal for crysis 2 (they build it for 3d from start) I got the very same fps but it is a huge fps tradeoff in BFBC2.

Is the upgrade from the 2630 to the 2720 really worth the money? I'm thinkin about doin it just not sure if it's worth 400 dollars? Also does anyone know when they'll be gettin more? I don't wana have to wait a month to get this thing.

I really don't think it's worth the money ASUS charges. What are you planning on doing with the laptop that would warrant a CPU upgrade?

I am going to mostly be using it to play games like starcraft, cod or sims. I also will be using it to download music/movies. And is it something i can upgrade later on my own?

Yeah, but it will be more expensive to upgrade vs the Sagers. That said, you definitely don't need the upgrade.

Why didn't you order it here at Xoticpc?

I was going to till they wanted to tack on a shipping and brokerage fee of $139. Amazon.ca has no additional charges beyond the applicable tax. The downside is I can't initially customize but that's not a big deal.

Can any G73SW-3DE owners please confirm whether the transformer/power supply input is the switchable type? I have a US-type to AUS-type adapter, but it does not step from 240V to 110V. I just don't want to plug it into my 240V supply and get an ominous 'nothing'...
I contacted Asus and can confirm that it is switchable, in case anyone else needed to know.

And btw, yes I have all of the latest Nvidia drivers and internet version on Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer

I researched this unit prior to settling on the Sager; if you change either HDD away from the default Momentus XT, you won't have any recovery media except for the driver disk unless you pay Xotic to make it for you before they swap out the HDDs.

I am curious how much of a difference does the 1080 v 720 make on BFBC2 anyways? I have always been a huge fan of the BF series and I am really looking forward to playing 3d. I really don't think it will make a big difference.

Also, you say you play on Med settings? Can't you max out that game? Can't the laptop handle it?

Do you guys think the 19.5v 7.7amp 150w AC adapter for the G73SW-3DE is adequate?

Its probably adequate for the regular SW's but Ive read reviews that the A1's were already hitting 140w on max load...

So how does that translate to the 3DE where it has a 120Hz screen, 3D emitter or even going Stereoscopic 3D mode at max load?

Do you think getting a 180w AC adapter will give you better performance on the G73SW-3DE?

Yeah I was originally getting a VX7...but then I found out its only a 15.6 model...I was going to go for an A1 too...But I just went with the 3DE...best bang for the buck! the VX7 and the A1 dont have a "Matte" 120Hz screen, 3D emitter and 3D glasses...Sure the VX7 has a 3GB Vram and 16GB DDR3 RAm...But how much of a difference can that make...Not much realy...By the time we need that much memory its pretty much time to upgrade your CPU and GPU anyway...

To Me the 3DE is the top of the line model cause it has features that the other versions dont have...

I agree completely. I was originally going to get the A1, Then I started reading reviews of the screen quality on the 3de's. For the couple extra 100 bucks it was hard to say no. My order will finally be here this saturday. 28th I think. I have been extraordinarily patient and I'm starting to get very twitchy. ;) I can't wait to post my first impressions...

I did consider a ram upgrade but currently 8 is definitely enough. Though I can see myself dropping a few extra more gigs in by the end of the year with some new game releases.

It is a converter. Should be fine if the power supply falls into the range of acceptable input on your power supply. You'll only have to worry about a plug adapter.

8GB is more than enough for games...a lot of games dont require more than 4GB since a lot of them still run on 32-Bit environment even some 64-Bit enabled games dont require more than 4GB...8GB is good for a while unless they stop supporting 32-Bit soon...maybe after 4 years...

Hi all, I took delivery of my G73SW-3DE yesterday, and found it impossible to set up the 3D vision... Every time I try to enable it, it asks me to plug in a USB IR transmitter (which of course should be built in). I've tried a bunch of drivers & configurations, even reloaded windows and the drivers from Asus, with no success. A quick scan of device manager shows no reference to any IR emitters, USB or otherwise... Starting to think that the hardware is either disconnected internally or missing altogether. Not happy! Stay tuned.

UPDATE:

My machine was RMA'd back to XoticPC (luckily avoided an asus RMA) and the problem turned out to be the internal connection to the IR emitter which had either worked loose or had never been reconnected when they upgraded the machine.

Huge props to XoticPC who arranged return shipping (including insurance) and had the laptop back to me within a week. In fact, they repaired and shipped it the same afternoon that they received it! Very happy with the communication and service.

All working well now and loving my G73SW-3DE!

Not happy! Stay tuned.

Hello everyone,
I've discovered an interesting and quite weird issue between ASUS G73SW-3DE and Crucial DDR3 memory.
Couple of days ago I've upgraded my notebook with 4x 4GB DDR3 Crucial Memory.
Tech Specs: Crucial 4GB DDR3 1333Mhz (PC-10600)
After that I began receiving BSOD:
0x0000003B: SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION
EXCEPTION_CODE: (NTSTATUS) 0xc0000005 - The instruction at "0x%08lx" referenced
memory at "0x%08lx". The memory could
not be "%s".
Memory broken? Let's investigate. Here is the story.
I get BSOD only when notebook is on battery. With AC adapter, everything works fine

Tests I've done:
MemTest+ v4.20 DOS - for 4 hours with AC and on battery -- NO ERRORS

MemTest 4.0 Pro (windows) http://hcidesign.com/memtest/ -- GAVE COUPLE OF ERRORS, probably NOT related to memory as
another notebook with MemTest worked fine (explained below)
All tests were performed on clean Windows 7 Ultimate x64 installation, without any additional drivers or software that
might affect the test.
Knowing that sometimes memory modules just dont "like" the way they are placed in DIMM slots I tried various
combinations and still no luck. Still getting BSOD.
Then I decided to go with pairs and since notebook has 4 DIMM slots (1,4 on bottom and easily accessible and 2,3 on
back of the motherboard).
I leaved two crucial memory modules in DIMM slots 2 and 3 and tested notebook again. No problem at all with all memory
tests. Battery or AC - everything OK.
Nothing wrong even when I added another crucial module to DIMM slot 1. But upon inserting last module to DIMM 4 or
moving one from DIMM slot 1 to 4, I received same BSOD as earlier.
Probably hardware issue with DIMM slot or battery?
I thought so, but right now I'm using three 4GB Crucial memory in slots 1,2,3 and 2GB Samsung module (factory one) in
slot 4 and it works fine.
All modules including factory ones were tested one by one on ASUS G73 and another high-end notebook, and they showed
ERROR FREE.
I have an idea that its somehow connected to internal ASUS memory controller / BIOS / probably voltage or something
else because BSODs happen only when notebook is on battery power.
It is certainly NOT a hardware issue of memory modules or notebook.
Hope its a BIOS issue and ASUS releases new version soon. (current bios - 205)
Any suggestions, did anyone experience same issue?
